‘School Spirits' Season 2 Finale: Jess Gabor Explains Janet's Decision to Stay
This article contains spoilers for the March 6 2025 episode of 'School Spirits'
In the last episodes of 'School Spirits' Season 2, Janet (Jess Gabor), who was finally free of high school purgatory after hijacking Maddie (Peyton List)'s body, agreed to return to the school to swap places with Maddie, who's been stuck in limbo ever since.
'Janet starts to finally empathize with Maddie by seeing her through her friends,' Gabor told TheWrap of how the conversation Simon (Kristian Flores) has with her changes her mind.
'When she's in the cabin with all of Maddie's friends, who clearly love Maddie enough to kidnap her, Janet doesn't know what that's like to have friends that have your back or what it's like to trust somebody again,' said Gabor. 'The person that she relied on most in this world, Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman), abused her and completely took advantage of her and her innocence.'
'She realizes what she's doing is not the right way to do it and maybe there's another way. Maybe there's a second chance at a second life someplace else, but it can't be through stealing Maddie's body,' she added.
Gabor explained why, even when Janet unlocked her own exit and had the chance to cross over, she decided to stay in the school and how she finally took power over Mr. Martin, her controlling father, and her own scar (the place in the school where she died that contained all her trauma).
TheWrap: Why does she decide not to go through her exit in the end?
Jess Gabor: She's a scientist. She wants answers. She wants to figure things out. Even though her door is open and she has accepted her trauma and has accepted what happened to her, that doesn't mean that she can help everybody else get out as well.
She realizes that maybe there's more to life than what she thought. Maybe it's not all just black and white. She has to decide, 'Am I in or am I out?' And she makes this really bold choice to go in the gray area and help these newfound friends figure out how they can get out too.
When she sees her father in the scar, what does that represent to her?
Her dad was always the person telling her who she wasn't, who she couldn't be. And the scars represent your biggest fear. It's like all of your trauma in one room.
Walking into a room where her Dad is staring her down condescendingly, that rips her apart. She has to confront him in her head space: 'You don't get to tell me who I am. You don't get to tell me I'm not a scientist. You don't get to tell me I'm just a woman who's going to be a housewife. You don't get to do that. I get to determine my fate.' And so she gets to have that power back when.
It's interesting to see her take control now that she can be honest with her fellow ghosts.
It might be the first time she has the power in a relationship. Even when she escapes the school in Maddie's body, she's not in power. She's running away from something. She's not running to something. Having friends who have your back, it does empower you as a person. And it empowered Janet and it made her more human.
Who knows what is waiting for her if she goes through the door? Does she believe it's heaven?
I definitely thought about it while working on Janet. After 60 years in a so-called purgatory, and especially coming from her background that is extremely religious, I think she has some sort of faith.
And I also think she believes that she can go to heaven. So in the boat when Mr. Martin tells her, 'How do you know where you're going to go?' it's so manipulative, because he knows how deep that trauma runs in her.
She does have to grapple with that, whether she likes it or not. It's something that all the ghosts in the series have to grapple with: What is out there? If this is purgatory, is there something else?
It was never clear, but was there a romantic relationship between Mr. Martin and Janet?
It was a one-sided relationship. I don't think Janet's a romantic person, to say the least. I don't think that she's dreaming of kissing him, but she has an infatuation with him, and that she has a deep love for him and a yearning for him. He saw her as a mentee, but she saw him as an idol. I hope we get to explore that in Season 3, if the creators decide that that's a place that we want to go.
When he pulls her back into this red room and he's having his mental breakdown, she's surrounded by all the people that now believe her and not him, and she's never had that before. She's taking her power back. Her not going through that door is her taking her power back. 'You don't get to decide when I choose my afterlife.'
Season 2 of 'School Spirits' is now streaming on Paramount+

Iconic '90s Sitcom Star, 60, Celebrates Major Milestone With Rare Appearance
Iconic '90s Sitcom Star, 60, Celebrates Major Milestone With Rare Appearance originally appeared on Parade. As David Puddy — better known as simply "Puddy" — on Seinfeld, Patrick Warburton uttered some of the iconic sitcom's most unforgettable lines, from "You stole my Jesus fish" to "Gotta support the team," to "Ask the 8-Ball!" Over 30 years later, the beloved actor is still making fans laugh — but now he's cracking jokes live onstage. Warburton, 60, took to TikTok this week to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his first stand-up performance with a clip from the taping of his debut stand-up special, "Still Catholic," on June 7 at the El Portal Theater in Los Angeles. "Thanks to everyone who came out last weekend to help celebrate my one-year anniversary," he wrote in his caption of the video montage, which showed the actor performing in a backwards baseball cap for an enthusiastic crowd (but didn't reveal any of his material just yet). In an interview with The Wrap last month, Warburton opened up about his recent foray into stand-up comedy, calling the last year "one of the most amazing years" of his life. 'It's just been a wild ride this year," he said, adding, "I have been touring non-stop and I had never done this before. I wrote and I performed and it's been an incredible year. I've never known this kind of autonomy. I've always been told what to do and what to say, how to say a word, and that all changed.' 'There's a part of me that's like why did you wait 'til now?" Warburton continued. "But there's another part that's like where are you going with this at the age of 60? But then there's another side of me that's just like, at this point, it doesn't matter because it's been one of the most amazing years. So much fun,' the comedian went on to say, joking that he's "really enjoyed throwing everybody under the bus" as part of his act. "You know, my family, they're all up for it. They love it," he said, explaining that his routine revolves around "fun dumb things. There's great perspective stuff on societal things, there's a lot of family stuff. I feel like, to a degree, I'm relatable. I'm on stage for 70 minutes, I don't really talk about Seinfeld apart from references in regards to my family that might have something to do with that. But at the end of the day, it's standup.'Iconic '90s Sitcom Star, 60, Celebrates Major Milestone With Rare Appearance first appeared on Parade on Jun 13, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

TheWrap Names USC Annenberg Journalism Graduate as 2025–26 Reporting Fellow
TheWrap is proud to announce the recipient of its second annual Reporting Fellowship, presented in partnership with the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. This year's fellowship has been awarded to Casey Loving, who graduated last month with a Master of Arts in Specialized Journalism from USC Annenberg. Loving will join TheWrap's newsroom in Los Angeles for a full year beginning June 2025, working alongside seasoned journalists to hone his skills in reporting, writing, research and multimedia storytelling. 'It takes real courage to enter journalism right now — when the profession is under pressure from political division, disinformation and public distrust,' said Sharon Waxman, founder and editor-in-chief of TheWrap. 'That's why TheWrap remains deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of reporting talent. This fellowship is more than an opportunity — it's a recognition that young journalists today are stepping into a high-stakes field, where their role is not just to report the news, but to rebuild trust and tell stories that cut through the noise.' 'Our partnership with TheWrap connects the academy and industry, providing our students with meaningful newsroom experience,' said USC Annenberg Dean Willow Bay. 'Casey Loving's selection as the 2025 fellow reflects our shared commitment to preparing the next generation of multimedia storytellers.' Hailing from Maize, Kansas, Casey Loving is a graduate from USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where he received his Master of Arts degree in Specialized Journalism following a BA in communication studies from Missouri State University (class of 2024). A lifelong devotee of film journalism and Hollywood, Loving first made inroads into the industry from the Midwest before moving to Los Angeles. At USC, he worked as an entertainment reporter for Annenberg Media — where he covered Sundance, produced documentaries and more — and he has previously written professionally for a number of entertainment web publications. He believes 'a great film or TV show can change your life — it's changed mine many times over.' Based in TheWrap's Los Angeles office, Loving will work full-time as a reporter covering a broad range of stories with a special focus on the Awards desk. He will receive daily assignments and training to develop his reporting, writing, research and multimedia skills alongside TheWrap's industry-leading journalists, reporting to deputy managing editor Benjamin Lindsay and Awards editors Steve Pond and Missy Schwartz. Loving joins TheWrap newsroom starting June 16. This initiative continues TheWrap and USC Annenberg's shared mission to prepare the next generation of reporters to meet today's journalistic challenges — with rigor, curiosity and integrity.
