Fire tears through Edinburgh flat as residents evacuated and street sealed off

Yahoo20-06-2025
Edinburgh emergency services rushed to a residential area in the north west of the capital as a blaze tore through a flat.
Police, the ambulance service and at least 25 firefighters responded to the incident at a block of flats on Gunnet Court, Muirhouse.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received the call shortly before 11pm on Thursday night, June 19, and mobilised five pump appliances and a height vehicle.

Terrifying images from the scene show a firefighter battling orange flames coming from a 3rd floor flat as black smoke can be seen billowing from the building.
The height vehicle was used to extinguish the blaze as the firefighter could be seen spraying water into the flat while being elevated by the appliance while the whole apartment was engulfed in flames.
The area, including Muirhouse View, was taped off by emergency services as several police cars could also be seen.
It is understood residents were evacuated as a group of people could be seen standing behind a cordon watching on.
The SFRS confirmed hero firefighters battled the blaze for three hours as they left at around 2am on Friday, June 20.
A spokesperson said: "We received reports of a fire at a flat on Gunnet Court, at Muirhouse View, at 22.50 hours on Thursday, June 20. We mobilised five appliances and a height vehicle.
"The fire on a third floor flat was extinguished and the last appliances left the scene at 2am. Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance."
It is currently not known if there were any casualties. The Scottish Ambulance Service was approached for comment.

Man takes own life outside childcare centre

A community is reeling after a man took his own life outside a Queensland childcare centre, where six children were awaiting pickup by their parents. Emergency services were called to a disturbance at Habitat Early Learning centre in Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast around 6pm on Monday. On arrival, police said they had located a 28-year-old man who had forced entry to the premises, was self-harming, and sustained serious injuries as a result. 'Officers attempted to negotiate with the man before taking him into custody,' a police spokesman said. 'The man became unresponsive soon after. 'Attending police rendered first aid before other emergency services arrived, however he was declared dead a short time later.' The man's death is currently being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and could be looked into by the Crime and Corruption Commission. A spokesman for the childcare centre told the Courier Mail six children were inside the premises at the time, alongside five staff. 'The offender was unable to gain immediate access to the centre due to security measures including fingerprint scanners, and this allowed our staff the time to follow their safety protocols and hide everyone in a secure location,' they said. 'The offender was not known to any staff or our families. 'None of the children witnessed the offender after his initial attempts to enter the building.' Queensland Education minister John Paul Langbroek, when asked about the event at an unrelated press conference shortly after, declared it was 'a horrendous issue that I've only just been advised of'. 'I'm sure that for many of those students and teachers, it's a particularly traumatic experience they've gone through,' he said. 'I think those early childhood teachers and educators are heroes, and any counselling service that is needed will be provided, but the safety of our children is paramount.' Pasadena police investigate alleged assault at Rose Bowl concert

The Pasadena Police Department is searching for the man who allegedly knocked a woman unconscious at a Rose Bowl concert this weekend. The alleged assault happened during the Rüfüs Du Sol concert Saturday night after a dispute over a spilled drink. It was one of the concerns concertgoers raised about the "chaotic" night at the stadium. "I will never go to the Rose Bowl again," concertgoer Derric Dalton said. "This was a concert, or it was meant to be, but it wasn't. It was a chaotic, dangerous mess, and I'm so angry about it." Social media users echoed Dalton's sentiment following the Saturday night event, raising concerns about massive crowds crammed into the venue. "The show started around 9 p.m.," Dalton said. "Thousands of people started pouring in from every direction, standing on top of chairs in the aisles, in the corridors, blocking the exits, swarming the ADA section. It was awful." Dalton said he was worried about an event similar to the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy in Houston. "I left after 15 minutes because I was afraid of being trampled," he said. "If anything would have gone south in any way for one second, there is no way people would have escaped." According to Pasadena officials, neither the city nor the Rose Bowl has received any official complaints as of late Monday afternoon. City staff emphasized that the venue had police, fire prevention teams and private security personnel on site at the stadium. Pasadena also mentioned that every major event at the Rose Bowl undergoes an after-action review to look for improvements. "I hope the Rose Bowl realizes how serious the situation was. It was actually a nightmare," Dalton said. "I feel like there's a lot of blame to go around, and rightly so. I hope they fix the problem before people die." CBS News Los Angeles contacted Rose Bowl staff and Live Nation, the concert promoter, but have not received a response. The next major event at the stadium is the UCLA football game on Aug. 30.

Family says HOA sent cleanup warning after arson at North Texas home

A Midlothian family whose home was set on fire said the arsonist wasn't their only shock. The Wilson family said an unknown person poured gas on their home around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, set it on fire, and ran. Six adults and two small children were inside the house. Midlothian police confirm an arson investigation is ongoing. Later the same day, the arson victims said they got notices from their HOA's property management company, Goddard Management. The notices asked the family to clean up the burned areas hours after the arson happened. "We're on rotation. Someone sleeps, someone gets up to be on watch," Wahsheida Wilson said. "I don't like living like this. Not at all. I don't feel safe." Wahsheida and Darryl Wilson said as they concentrated on family safety and the trauma of the incident. The HOA message seemed insensitive. A representative for Goddard Management told CBS News Texas the company apologizes to the Wilsons for a misunderstanding. According to the representative, the incident occurred during a routine monthly property review. The HOA board for the area where the Wilsons live, according to the representative, wants to help, even to the extent of offering a reward through Crimestoppers. The same board asked the Wilsons for copies of the surveillance video to disseminate to the community to catch the person behind the crime. Darryl Wilson said the area is now clean, thanks to the help of concerned neighbors who also brought over a large cookie that read, "Love over hate."
