Suneetha Narreddy writes open letter seeking reopening of probe into her father's murder
She said in the letter, written on August 10 on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, that Vivekananda Reddy was brutally murdered at his residence in Pulivendula in Kadapa district in March 2019 and the perpetrators of the crime were caught but the conspirators remained untouched.
On March 15, 2019, Sakshi TV, which is managed by Y.S. Bharati Reddy, wife of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, broadcast a news that Mr. Vivekananda Reddy died of a heart attack and several YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders repeated that claim on the same channel.
Ms. Suneetha Narreddy said she found her father's body with wounds that were covered with bandages.
The Sakshi newspaper carried a full-page story the next day alleging that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders were responsible for the murder. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy even filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a CBI probe.
During the 2019 State Assembly elections, Vivekananda Reddy's murder became a political weapon against the TDP. The YSRCP won and Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister. He personally assured Ms. Suneetha Narreddy that the killers would be caught, saying that failure (to apprehend the culprits) would be an insult to him.
The SIT formed by the YSRCP government was reconstituted just as it neared a breakthrough, after which Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy told Ms. Suneetha Narreddy that a CBI probe was 'not an option' as it might cause MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy to defect to another party.
She approached the A.P. High Court and it transferred the case to the CBI on March 11, 2020 but Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy withdrew his own petition for a CBI probe.
Noting the influence of the accused and State interference, the Supreme Court transferred the trial to Telangana on November 29, 2022, while observing that there was a larger conspiracy that required further CBI investigation. Yet, this has not happened.
Ms. Suneetha Narreddy expressed agony that, in her pursuit of justice, she knocked on every door and was harassed, falsely prosecuted and targeted by the government which her father once helped build.
'Justice is still elusive as the killers are rich and powerful. This is not only my family's tragedy but it is a national failure, where criminals hijacked democracy itself. If we, as citizens and leaders, do not act, we will one day find our freedom, our Constitution, and our values in their hands', she added, hoping that the elected representatives would do the needful treating her as their sister.

Thar driver who ran over two in Central Delhi found possessing illegal drugs, booked in 2nd case
NEW DELHI The accident spot. (Vipin Kumar/HT) A day after a 26-year-old man was arrested for mowing down two homeless men in his Mahindra Thar before crashing his vehicle near Gate No. 3 of Talkatora Stadium in central Delhi on Sunday morning, police said the accused possessed a bag containing multiple narcotics, including illegal psychotropic substances. According to police, the bag contained 0.3 grams of cocaine, 2.6g of LSD, 23.47g of methamphetamine (MD), 21.26g of ganja, 15.49g of flavoured tobacco, and 4.17g of charas, apart from ₹25,000 cash and a mobile phone. 'When our team reached the spot, the vehicle was in an accidental condition. During inspection, we found a bag with contraband in commercial quantity inside the Thar,' a senior police officer said. The accused, identified as Ashish Bachchas, a resident of Shakarpur in east Delhi, was driving the UP-registered vehicle when it rammed into an electric pole around 6.30am, investigators said. The items were seized and the vehicle was impounded, police said. Bachchas, who was already arrested for causing death by negligence and rash driving, was booked in another case registered under sections 20, 21, 22 and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Chanakyapuri police station. Police said the source of the drugs and those who received them are being investigated. 'He may have bought it for his own consumption or to sell it; the matter is under investigation,' the officer said. Bachchas was suspected to be under the influence of drugs during the incident, police said, adding that his medical report was awaited. One of the deceased men was identified as Sujesh Kshetri, who came from Sikkim, but there was no clarity yet on his age or other details. The second victim was yet to be identified, officials said. Kumar was detained at the spot. Probe revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep. Bachchas used to work as a driver, police said, adding that he was currently unemployed. The accused had celebrated Rakshabandhan with his family in Shakarpur and left for Gurugram around 10pm, where he partied with his friends. He was returning home when the accident happened.

HC Orders Retrial In Anti-Sikh Riot Case
New Delhi: More than 40 years after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots followed Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination, resulting in brutal killings where the accused walked free, Delhi High Court on Monday ordered retrial in one of the cases. In three other acquittals, HC asked the trial court to "reconstruct" the case records as vital documents, including deposition of witnesses and their statements, are missing. The cases relate to the killing of five Sikhs in the Raj Nagar Part I area in Palam Colony and the burning down of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part II, and were lodged at the Delhi Cantt police station. In 2017, HC had reopened these cases after it found that all accused were acquitted by trial courts in 1986, and neither Delhi Police nor CBI appealed. Incidentally, only two of the several accused men are alive. In multiple verdicts, a bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar ordered the retrial of the accused, Ramji Lal Sharma, and the reconstruction of records in three cases against another accused, Balwan Singh Khokhar. HC also flagged how, in Sharma's case, the trial court in 1986 "committed several manifest errors of law" that resulted in a "miscarriage of justice", and a "grave offence of murder and arson with communal overtones" was neither investigated properly nor "tried in right stead". The court said sufficient efforts were not made to involve all natural witnesses in the probe, including victim Harbhajan Singh's children who were present at the time of the incident, and/or any neighbours in whose house Singh's wife and children took shelter after the mob burnt their house down. On the long delay in victims approaching police, HC pointed out that "a bloodbath took place after the assassination and as a result of the violence, widows, children and persons residing in the vicinity ran away for their safety and took shelter elsewhere, which naturally meant they would not have been readily available for investigation". It said the trial court "failed to factor in the precarious situation and communal tensions which existed in the aftermath of the assassination". Dealing with the other three cases reopened in 2017, HC noted that apart from the shoddy investigation, trial judges "hardly took any steps to ensure the presence of crucial witnesses, including persons who had witnessed the incident", leading to missing material evidence. "Valuable lives have been lost in the incidents which form the subject matter of the present cases. Several crucial witnesses, including eyewitnesses to the incident, were not examined on account of insufficient efforts to secure their presence through service of summons at addresses which had been damaged and/or abandoned by such witnesses in the aftermath of the incident," the court observed. Bar Council Issues Notices To 16 Lawyers in Punjab & Haryana HC Over 'Bench Hunting'
Last Updated: Bench hunting is an unethical practice where litigants or their counsel aim to have a case heard by a particular judge or bench perceived as favourable to secure a desired outcome The privilege committee of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has issued notices to 16 lawyers over allegations of bench hunting in the high court, considering it a severe threat to the dignity and ethics of the legal profession. Bench hunting, or forum shopping, is an unethical practice where litigants or their counsel aim to have a case heard by a particular judge or bench perceived as favourable to secure a desired outcome. Central to the controversy is the high-profile case of Roop Bansal v State of Haryana, a corruption case involving a Gurugram-based realtor and a former special CBI court judge. Certain advocates allegedly engaged in bench hunting to obtain favourable orders in this matter. The privilege committee has sought responses from several lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Supreme Court, as well as senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mukul Rohatgi. 'This Committee is of the considered view that it is necessary at this stage to seek responses from Senior Advocates Sh. Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Sh. Mukul Rohatgi, in order to fairly and comprehensively adjudicate the matter at hand," the notice states. Those named in the notice include senior advocates Rakesh Nehra and Puneet Bali, as well as advocates JK Singla, Sidharth Bhardwaj, Aditya Aggarwal, Gagandeep Singh, Anmol Chandan, Baljeet Beniwal, Harsh Sharma, Sauhard Singh, Rupender Singh, Ankit Yadav, Ashim Singla, Aakash Sharma, Bindu, and APS Shergil. All have been directed to appear before the committee on August 16. The notice states that, prima facie, Singla orchestrated the plan but suggests it is 'highly unbelievable" that he acted alone, alleging that the effort was organised with ingenious minds possibly pulling strings behind the scenes. The privilege committee was formed on August 4, 2024, following directions from bar council chairman Rakesh Gupta and is headed by Raj Kumar Chauhan. The committee said documents placed before it allegedly indicate an attempt to manipulate the bench assignment process in the Punjab and Haryana HC. 'The sole objective of placing this matter, suo motu, before the Committee is to uphold the dignity of the legal profession, ensure the maintenance of legal ethics, and discharge the responsibilities entrusted under the law," the notice states. Citing an Indian Express report titled 'Reassigned case: Chief Justice Nagu hints at 'bench shopping', says bar being destroyed', the committee stressed on the seriousness of the issue, noting that there appears to be 'foul play" by advocates representing Roop Bansal, who may have manipulated procedural rules for convenience and gain. 'In India, common people knock on the doors of the court with the help of noble advocates. Here, Roop Bansal tried to break the door of the court with the help of some ingenious-minded advocates. The matters pertaining to M3M and Roop Bansal, pending before the Hon'ble Punjab & Haryana High Court, need to be watched carefully. The Bar Council cannot remain idle as a mere spectator. It is duty-bound to protect the dignity and ethics of the profession. The Committee must trace out the rotten apples from the basket before all get spoiled," the notice states. Describing the incident as 'painful and disturbing", the committee observed that certain advocates had allegedly attempted to manipulate bench allocation in a tactful, systematic, and organised manner. The committee said the court is regarded as the temple of justice and that any attempt to subvert it, whether driven by greed or manipulation, must be addressed with utmost seriousness. Drawing a parallel with the Mahabharata, the committee said: 'We are reminded of the Mahabharata, where the silence of wise men in Duryodhana's court led to the disrobing of Draupadi. This serves as a grim reminder that silence and inaction in the face of injustice enable further injustice." 'Legal ethics are not optional. They are sacred. Upholding the dignity of this noble profession requires moral courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to truth," it added.
