Guelph author Melinda Burns uses poetry to connect to her Indigenous roots

The medicine wheel is a sacred symbol in many Indigenous cultures. It represents the four seasons and how each is associated with different aspects of life, growth and teachings.
For Guelph author Melinda Burns, it served as a way for her to reclaim and celebrate her heritage. And she does this through a collection of poetry found in her recently released book Homecoming.
Her poems are grouped according to the directions found on the medicine wheel. Each section reflects both the universal human journey of growth and learning, and the author's personal experiences.
Burns recently sat down with CBC K-W's The Morning Edition host Craig Norris to talk more about the book.

Craig Norris: The poems you wrote represent the four directions of the medicine wheel. For those who aren't familiar with what each direction means, could you walk us through them?
Melinda Burns: I t's a symbol in Native American spirituality of wholeness and balance, and it's a circle that's divided into four quadrants. The east is for beginnings, spring, morning, starting out. The south is for summer and the afternoon adolescence of life. And that represents innocence and joy. The west is autumn and evening, and it has to do with loss, but also introspection. And then the north is for winter and for the ancestors and old age. And it has to do with wisdom.
Norris: How does your poetry correlate with the wheel?
Burns: When I was starting to put this collection together, I was trying to think of how to order the poems that I've written over a long time. So there were poems for my childhood and growing up and my relationship with my mother, marriage, motherhood. And when I thought of doing it chronologically, it just didn't seem quite right. And when I hit on the idea of arranging them according to the medicine wheel, it really presented a sense of wholeness in a life. In the east there are many beginnings, not just the beginning of our life. And in the south there are many joys, not just the joys and wonder of childhood. And of course many losses and the need to go within to understand them. And also a lot of gathering of wisdom over the years as we live and as we connect with our ancestors.
Norris: As you've been writing and compiling these poems, what has that done for you personally, as you continue your own journey of reclaiming your heritage?
Burns: ​​​Well, it is an ongoing journey. I called the book Homecoming from the very beginning because it's about the journey that all of us make to come home to ourselves, to who we're meant to be and who we really are. So there was a double impact for me. One was just compiling the poems and getting to see my life [and having] that feeling of wholeness, that everything fits, that nothing is good or bad or right or wrong, it is just part of the cycle. But the other part certainly was about putting it out as a native person claiming this very rich heritage that I didn't get to know about from my mother because of her connection to residential schools and her distancing from our heritage.
Norris: What has your poetry helped you to learn about yourself?
Burns: I really do think poetry helps us learn a great deal about ourselves. There's a quote from Rumi at the beginning of the book that says: 'Through love, all pain will turn to medicine.' And I think it's helped me to see how true that is, that when we, when I approach my life with love, with everything that's happened in it, the highs and lows, the joys and losses, that it does turn to medicine and in the sense that it strengthens and fortifies me.
Norris: Could you share a poem with us?
Burns: I have one that I wrote some years ago, and you might recognize this particular festival this is referring to...
Norris: What do you hope people take away from your collection of poetry?
Burns: I hope that they can relate to each section as they read it. So there's four sections and then the centre, which is the place of mystery and the creator. And that as they read my poems in those sections, they think about their own beginnings and their own joys and their own losses and times of going within and their own wisdom that they've acquired. And that it helps them to see their lives in this sense of wholeness rather than that linear idea of birth on the left and death on the right and trying to get somewhere in between. That there's really no place we need to get. We're just always circling the mystery. And I hope that's a comfort to people.
Norris: What's next for you?
Burns: A couple of things I'd love to mention. The French edition of the book is coming out in 2026, which is just amazing to me to be able to see my poems in another language. I'll be reading at the Eden Mills Writers' Festival this year. It's on Sept, 7 and right now the The Hillside Festival poem is in a poetry and art rotating exhibit at The Boathouse in Guelph, and the exhibit is going to feature poems and artwork that is inspired by the poems [in Homecoming ].

Genevieve Beauchemin has the story of how AI and technology is being used to restore the legacy of Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau. Robots at a startup in Montreal are helping restore the legacy of world-renowned Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau. A sprawling investigation into forgeries of Morrisseau's paintings that have flooded the market for decades has uncovered what investigators have called the biggest case of art fraud in Canada, and some say, possibly in the history of the world. The estate of the late artist has turned to AI and robots to help authenticate his paintings, in hopes of providing concrete empirical evidence for Canadian courts. The process involves robotic arms that take paintbrushes, dip them in bright paint colours and execute complex strokes on a canvass to produce copies of paintings. This may evoke fears of robots taking over the art world, but those behind the technology say the paintings are not machine-created fakes to be passed off as a real Morrisseau, but replicas to train AI models to root out fraud. 'The better our work gets, the better the model has to get to detect the copies,' said Acrylic Robotics CEO Chloe Ryan. 'This also allows us to refine our robotic techniques.' Ryan is a former painter now armed with a degree in mechanical engineering, who set out on a mission to shake up the art world when she co-founded Acrylic Robotics. 'I have been painting and selling my work since I was a teenager, and I became very frustrated with how long it would take me to make a painting, and then I could sell that work of art once to one person,' they said. 'I was making two dollars an hour, and I thought, 'how can artists make a living selling their art?'' Ryan says that led to a longer reflection on what she calls the 'scarcity-driven art market.' 'The value of art is driven by how few people have access to it,' she said. 'In the music or film industry, it is driven by how many people your art resonates with.' Ryan set out to pioneer a model that would allow for the creation of copies of paintings that capture the same details as the original. She knows that is a scary proposition to some who are concerned robots could take over the work of human creativity, but she says this is based on using technology as a tool. The model she is pitching is of artists consenting to copies of their paintings to be made, which would be clearly identified as copies, so that the human behind the art will be credited and compensated while also making their art more accessible. 'I am pioneering a new method of creation in fine art, one that is driven by how many people resonate with your work, and not one that is driven by how scarce it is,' said Ryan. 'He made Canada look at itself' But what caught the attention of the estate of the late Morrisseau is the technology's potential to help in its fight against forgeries. Morrisseau, who died in 2007 at the age of 75, was a world-renowned painter known as the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. 'Morrisseau was pivotal in sharing Indigenous culture, opening up markets and new pathways for other Indigenous artists,' said Cory Dingle, the executive director of Morrisseau's estate. 'But he also made Canada look at itself. 'All through the residential school trauma, the land displacement and all the racism against him, his art always spoke of love and unity,' adds Dingle. '(O)f interconnectivity and interdependency, and so it is important to restore his legacy.' Morrisseau's pieces sell in the millions, but thousands of fraudulent works of art have flooded the market since the late 1990's, making it difficult to authenticate and sell his paintings. The estate says reporting fakes posed a challenge in the face of Canadian laws. Acrylic Robotics works closely with the estate to create increasingly precise copies of Morrisseau paintings, which are used to train a computer program called Norval AI that was developed three years ago by professors to detect fakes. That program produces heat maps showing spots where a copy differs from the original. Acryclic Robotics has been going back and forth with the estate for about a year, improving copy after copy. For Morrisseau's estate, this is part of a crucial mission. 'Restoring his legacy means that these institutions will study him, that the museum will display him, and we will be able to share this with the world,' said Dingle, sitting in front of a rarely seen Morrisseau. But in the process, there will be more Morrisseau copies floating around. Robotic Acrylics says it is working with the estate to ensure that there are markings in the pieces to ensure that they could never be sold as originals. Producing precise brush strokes involves much more than a few clicks of a mouse. 'There is a robotic challenge of how do I have a robot move in the same way as a human wrist, with the same delicate strokes,' said Ryan. Achieving that may spark concerns about machines replacing humans, but the hope here is that this is a high-tech step in the age-old fight against art fraud.

If you've got an orange 1963 Gretsch guitar kicking around, Bob Wegner would like to know. It may just be the cherished instrument stolen from Canadian rock icon Kim Mitchell during a trip to Hamilton in 1975. Wegner, a professional musician and music historian, learned about the stolen guitar while writing a book on Mitchell's 1970s hard rock band, Max Webster. "No guitar will ever replace the guitar you cut your teeth on," he said. "Just a part of you goes missing." Inspired by successful efforts to return lost or stolen guitars to the likes of Paul McCartney, Randy Bachman and Jimmy Page, Wegner said he wanted to do the same for Mitchell. In the spring, Wegner launched Kim's Lost Guitar Project, a website with photos of and information about Mitchell's guitar, and an email for people to contact if they think they've found it. Wegner, who's based in Montreal and was born in Hamilton, said only about 30 Gretsch Nashville 6120 guitars were ever made. The instrument has double cutaways, red felt around the mute switch, painted F-holes and a horseshoe on the headstock. Mitchell's had a scratch on the back of the body and a cigarette burn on the headstock by the low E tuning peg. Mitchell's dad bought the guitar for him at a time when money was tight, Wegner said. "'His house was $11,000 at the time. The guitar $700. Do the math today and know that he really spent huge bucks for me,'" Wegner quotes Mitchell as saying on his website. Did the bright orange guitar clash with Mitchell's outfits? Maybe, Wegner said. "But it doesn't matter. He could rock anything and just he looked great with it." Wegner said Mitchell also told him that playing the guitar out of a Marshall amp was the best guitar sound he'd ever heard. "To have him plug that into a Marshall again would be so completely worth it." CBC Hamilton reached out to Mitchell for comment but did not receive a response before publication time. Wegner said he hasn't yet received any tips about the guitar, so he's trying to raise awareness about his efforts. Guitar stolen from van after Duffy's Tavern gig Max Webster was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2023, noting that with Mitchell as its frontman, the band released seven albums from 1976 to 1981 — six of which received gold status certification and one platinum certification in Canada. Born in Sarnia, Ont., Mitchell went on to have a successful solo career, with tunes including Go For Soda and Patio Lanterns. He's now 73 and still performing. Wegner wasn't yet born when Max Webster broke up, but he said he grew up listening to the band and loved it. As he got interested in music history, he realized nobody had done a book on the band, so he decided to write one. The result was Max Webster: High Class, for which he interviewed band members, including Mitchell. Through that process, Wegner learned about the stolen guitar. He said Mitchell's bandmates recalled how devastated Mitchell was when it was taken from the band's van before they left town after a string of shows at Duffy's Tavern. Earl Johnson, the Hamilton-born guitarist of hard rock band Moxy, came up playing in the same area as Mitchell and Max Webster, though he said he didn't get to know Mitchell until decades later. Johnson told CBC Hamilton that Duffy's was "a great rock club" and the place to see new music in the city. It was a basement club near King and John streets and open six nights a week, Johnson recalled. At the time, he said, musicians would often play six nights a week, living out of hotels and travelling between cities and towns. It's "hard to fathom" how many clubs there were in Ontario, he said, adding there were so many venues, you could have probably toured for a month on Yonge Street in Toronto alone. Now, Johnson said, live music is far less profitable and young musicians he knows say they risk losing money playing live. As for Mitchell's stolen guitar, Johnson said he's heard of that sort of thing happening to musicians before. He said he once had a guitar fall off his vehicle, but luckily he noticed and was able to find it. Wegner said guitar likely has gone through many hands since it was stolen. The person who stole it probably "sold to someone [who] sold to somebody else, and gave it to their friend's dog, and their dog gives it to the squirrel down the street, and the squirrel dies and some guy inherits it, and now it's just sitting in this basement and he has no idea whose guitar this is. That's how these things go." Wegner hopes anyone who thinks they know where the guitar is will "do the right thing" and get in touch via his website. He said he's not looking to get anyone in trouble and police aren't involved. "We do not care about who stole it. There's no retribution. There's no anger, no anything. It's just getting the guitar back into the right hands."
