Water cut in parts of JB and Tebrau on July 15 and 16

The Star07-07-2025
JOHOR BARU: Over 30,000 user accounts in parts of the city and Tebrau will face a 26-hour scheduled water supply disruption on July 15 and 16 because of maintenance works at the Sultan Iskandar Water Treatment Plant in Pasir Gudang.
Water utility firm Ranhill SAJ's chief executive officer Anuar Abdul Ghani said the planned maintenance involves critical instruments at the treatment plant.
The works are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability and stability of Johor's water supply, he added.
'This temporary shutdown is essential for Ranhill SAJ to carry out comprehensive maintenance of the plant's water supply system.
'We are confident that this maintenance will help ensure the treated water produced at the plant continues to meet the standards set by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN),' he said in a statement on Monday (July 7).
Anuar added that the scheduled disruption was part of a proactive effort to keep the water distribution system in optimal and safe condition for users.
'We appeal to all affected consumers to store sufficient water ahead of time and to use water wisely throughout the disruption period,' he said.
He added that during the disruption, water tankers will be deployed to meet emergency demand, particularly from critical facilities such as hospitals, dialysis centres and institutions that require an uninterrupted supply.

SPAN to enforce Water Safety Passport among workers by early 2026

PUTRAJAYA: The Water Safety Passport, which emphasises compliance with safety procedures and risk awareness among workers, is expected to be enforced by early 2026, according to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). The programme is set to be implemented in stages, starting September, 2025, with the development of training modules and a pilot run scheduled for the end of the year. "Each participant, comprising workers in the water services industry, will be awarded a Water Safety Passport after completing the training, as proof of basic safety qualification recognised by SPAN and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),' it said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 6). The development of the Water Safety Passport module is the result of a collaboration between SPAN and NIOSH, supported by water supply and sewerage operators, aimed at strengthening risk control and safety within the national water services industry. According to SPAN, the initiative serves as a benchmark for joint efforts to enhance safety awareness and knowledge among workers in Malaysia's water services industry. "With the implementation of this programme, SPAN is confident that occupational safety standards in the water industry will be further reinforced, contributing to safer, more efficient and resilient water service delivery,' read the statement. The exchange ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding documents for the collaboration took place during the Asean Safety and Health Workers 2025 Summit, organised by The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Aug 4. — Bernama

Water supply in Pontian fully restored, says Johor's Ranhill SAJ

JOHOR BARU: A technical fault at the Ulu Choh 1 Tank Outlet and nearby Kampung Sarpin caused the unexpected water disruptions in parts of Pontian since Monday. Johor water company Ranhill SAJ said it worked to minimise the impact on consumers by reconfiguring the distribution system. It has now confirmed that the water supply in Pontian has been fully restored after all related issues were resolved today. "During the disruption, alternative water supply was provided via water tankers and static tanks sent to strategic areas and based on residents' requests. "We extend our deepest appreciation to the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail, for his concern over the issue of the water disruption. "The incident was handled in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN)." Earlier, the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, said he would monitor the increasingly frequent water supply disruptions in Johor and will help resolve them. Tunku Ismail, on Thursday, had responded to a post by BrotherhoodJHR on X , who shared their frustration over water disruptions in Pontian that had entered its fourth day. "I will monitor and try to resolve this quickly. "It's important that we safeguard Johor's water – it's a Johor asset and should not be under a company appointed by the (federal) government. "Pray that the state's finances improve so we can buy shares in Johor's water and place it under the state government's care, Insya Allah," he wrote in the post.
