Fight against terrorism: Minister urges KP, Balochistan to fulfill their responsibilities
Speaking at a Youm-e-Shuhada (Martyrs' Day) ceremony held at the Islamabad Police Headquarters, Chaudhry said that while Pakistan's security forces are fully equipped to combat terrorism, a successful fight requires strong political support.
'Security forces are fulfilling their responsibilities, but I want to tell the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where terrorism is on the rise, to fulfil their political responsibility,' he said, adding that this cannot happen that on the one hand, our security forces and ordinary citizens are offering sacrifices on a daily basis and the provincial governments do not fulfill their responsibilities.
The minister warned the governments of both the provinces to fulfill their responsibilities as their 'irresponsible conduct' would not be acceptable any further.
Chaudhry said that at present, terrorism is again on the rise in the country. 'Pakistan has suffered 90,000 casualties, including security personnel, citizens and people from every walk of life,' he said, adding that these 90,000 sacrifices were made for ensuring peace and security in Pakistan.
He said that Pakistan is fighting terrorism as the frontline state, and if Pakistan failed to combat terrorism, it would have broader implications for regional and global security.
The minister further said that the Iranian president assured Pakistan that they will fight terrorism jointly, and this will help in improving the situation in Pakistan.
He said that Pakistan is holding talks with Afghanistan regarding terrorism; therefore, Afghanistan also needs to fulfil its responsibility as a neighbour.
He said the present government has ended the disparity of salaries between different security forces. Further steps will be taken for improving the capacity of the Islamabad Police and Federal Constabulary (FC), he said.
Chaudhary has assured to provide all necessary resources, including modern weapons to the police force. He paid tribute to the services and sacrifices of the police personnel. There has been a reduction of over 50 percent in heinous crimes in the federal capital territory due to the efforts of the police, he claimed.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and other senior officials of police also attended the event.

12 PTI workers arrested for rioting granted bail by Karachi court
A Karachi court on Tuesday granted bail to 12 workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who were detained on charges of rioting, stone-pelting, and attacking police during a protest rally in the metropolis on August 5. The judicial magistrate for District East approved the bail pleas filed by defence lawyers and ordered the release of the accused against surety bonds of Rs5,000 each. Earlier, police had produced the accused before the court and sought their physical remand for further interrogation. According to the investigation officer (IO), the PTI workers had blocked the road during a rally led by senior party leaders, including Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Awab Alvi, and Raja Azhar, at Hassan Square. The IO claimed the protest turned violent when the accused pelted stones at law enforcers and attacked them with sticks, injuring a police officer identified as Aijaz. The IO requested physical custody of the accused for criminal record office verification, adding that several other suspects were still at large. Later, PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh visited the city court to meet the released workers. Speaking to media persons on the occasion, he said that the bail order was a victory for truth and justice. The protest at Hassan Square was peaceful, and that the FIR registered against party workers was fabricated, he claimed. "Police used baton charge and fired shells on peaceful demonstrators," he alleged, adding that his name was not included in the FIR but was later inserted in the remand papers. He reiterated the party's resolve to continue the protest movement until PTI founder Imran Khan is released from jail. "The frustration among the youth is growing with each passing day. Continued incarceration of Imran Khan is not in the country's interest," he added.

Pakistan, Iraq agree on maritime ferry link to boost trade, tourism
Pakistan and Iraq have agreed to launch a ferry service connecting Umm Qasr Port in Iraq with Gwadar Port in Pakistan, in a move officials say will strengthen maritime cooperation, expand trade, and facilitate religious travel. The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and a three-member Iraqi Embassy delegation led by Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri, the ministry said in a statement. Terming the MoU a 'new chapter' in bilateral ties, Chaudhry said passenger and cargo links could capitalise on growing economic ties and religious travel. He noted Pakistan could meet Iraq's potassium sulphate requirements through a manufacturing facility in the Gwadar Free Zone, and sought Baghdad's support for Pakistan's candidacy in the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) elections. Pakistan grants first-ever ferry licence for routes to Iran, gulf countries The minister proposed expanding Pakistani exports of medicines, meat, and rice to Iraq while increasing Iraqi oil imports to Pakistan. According to official data, Pakistan's exports to Iraq stood at $54.29 million in FY24, while imports, mainly petroleum products, were $145.46 million. Chaudhry said the ferry link would complement similar initiatives with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council countries, potentially forming a regional maritime network under Pakistan's blue economy strategy. Alhimiri voiced strong support for the proposals, calling maritime transport a 'key enabler' for future collaboration. Both sides agreed to carry out feasibility studies to assess investment needs. Officials noted that more than 88,000 Pakistani pilgrims travelled to Iraq for Ashura last year, underscoring potential demand for regular sea routes serving both pilgrims and traders. FIR registered against PTI leaders, 550 workers over Karachi rally
Karachi Police have registered a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Karachi president and seven other senior leaders, along with over 500 other unidentified workers, on charges of rioting, vandalism and disrupting public order during a rally on University Road in Karachi. The case was lodged at the PIB Colony Police Station on behalf of the state, following violent incidents during a rally held on August 5 near Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The rally was led by PTI leaders Raja Azhar, Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Arsalan Khalid, Awab Alvi, Saifur Rehman, and Alamgir Khan, and attended by an estimated 500 to 600 participants. According to the FIR, rally participants blocked oncoming traffic and ignored police directives to disperse. Despite repeated warnings, several attendees, allegedly armed with sticks, began pelting stones at law enforcement personnel, prompting police to respond with tear gas under self-defence measures. During the clash, Head Constable Ejaz from Aziz Bhatti Police Station sustained head injuries after being struck by a stone. Protesters fled through nearby streets as police regained control of the situation. Station House Officer (SHO) PIB Inspector Muhammad Ashfaq confirmed that the FIR was registered under Sections 147, 148, 149, 186, and 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code, among others. He stated that 12 PTI workers had been arrested, while 500 to 550 unidentified suspects named in the FIR remain at large. Investigations are ongoing. Separately, Islamabad police have registered a case against 16 workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including both men and women, for participating in a protest on the Islamabad Expressway. The protest took place on August 5, during which female PTI workers were seen chanting slogans and waving party flags. Police arrested the demonstrators on the spot and later transferred them to Lohi Bher police station. According to officials, the FIR includes a total of 16 legal sections, including provisions under the PAPA Act and 11 other offences. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
