New toilets open up Stirling - and Scotland's - tourism and scenery to disabled people

Daily Record16-05-2025

Until the opening of the Changing Places Toilet in rural Stirling this week, there were no suitable facilities for those with disabilities in an area the size of Wales.
Locals in Tyndrum have opened up the wonders of Scotland to more people with disabilities thanks to a seven year campaign to build a Changing Places Toilet in the village.
Tyndrum Infrastructure Group (TIG), in collaboration with The Green Welly Stop, has officially opened the facility at The Green Welly Stop.

Until the opening of the CPT this week, there were no suitable facilities for disabled people in an area of the West of Scotland the size of Wales, preventing disabled people from travelling to the West Coast or taking a day out with the same level of dignity and comfort enjoyed by the rest of the population.

The project was made possible thanks to a major award from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with further funding support from the Hugh Fraser Foundation, The Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park and Forth Valley & Lomond Community Led Local Development fund.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, part of the UK Government's commitment to communities, allocated £4.3 million to Stirling Council to distribute to local groups and businesses.
The campaign to build a CPT in Tyndrum was launched seven years ago by Sarah Heward, the founder and co-owner of The Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum, after her father became ill and died from a degenerative neurological illness.
Changing Places Toilets are for disabled people and those with life-limiting conditions, their families and carers, for whom a standard accessible toilet is not adequate to meet their needs.
Geographically, Tyndrum is a strategic hub in Scotland with millions of vehicles passing through each year.
The Green Welly Stop kindly offered to provide not only the land required free of charge but also all management and care of the facility to ensure a well-maintained facility for those in need.

Sarah said: 'We were extremely fortunate to have been awarded the funding necessary to build the facility in Tyndrum, after so many years of campaigning and fundraising; this Changing Places Toilet will be transformational for those who need it.
'There were so many obstacles to building this facility in Tyndrum, starting with access to suitable land, so we were incredibly grateful that Edward and Fiona Robertson, owners of The Green Welly Stop, came forward with the offer of a plot to build it, without which the project wouldn't have happened.

'The financing to date has come largely from the UK Government via Stirling Council, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Authority and Forth Valley and Lomond Community Led Local Development Fund.
'It has not been an easy campaign to manage and has been extremely disheartening at many points.
'However, our small community-based charity remained focused on our vision of building a CPT in Tyndrum, and today really is a testament to what can be achieved through community coming together with a strong vision.'

Kim Kemp, Member of the Tyndrum Infrastructure Group and a Changing Places Toilet user said: 'No one wants to go on a day out knowing that they will have no access to toilet facilities, particularly families who have a child with a complex disability.
'Now that the Changing Places Toilet has opened in Tyndrum, people will be able to enjoy days out in one of Scotland's most beautiful tourist spots and travel through the Highlands.'
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, part of the UK Government's commitment to communities, allocated £4.3 million to Stirling Council to distribute to local groups and businesses.

In total, 29 projects across Stirling have now received financial support, delivering a wide range of benefits to communities.
Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Gerry McGarvey said: 'The opening of this Changing Place Toilet is a major achievement for the local community and is the result of their hard work and perseverance over a number of years.

'The new facility will allow people with complex disabilities and those who care for them to visit this stunning part of Scotland without anxieties about accessing appropriate toilet facilities.
'It's fantastic to see the funding being used for such an important project that will make a real difference to local people and visitors alike and ensure opportunities are available to all.
'Congratulations to everyone involved for completing this project, with the facility now available for visitors from all the world to use as we enter the peak tourist season.'
The Changing Place Toilet at the Green Welly Stop will be open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm. Please refer to www.thegreenwellystop.co.uk for seasonal time changes.

Family of man who fell seriously ill during Cyprus holiday face £41k bill to get him home

Family of man who fell seriously ill during Cyprus holiday face £41k bill to get him home Ian Wright's family initially thought he had food poisoning Sarah and Ian Wright (Image: Submitted - Sarah Wright ) A family is grappling with the potential cost of over £40,000 to get a seriously ill man home from Cyprus for medical treatment in the UK. Ian Wright, 47, from Cramlington in Northumberland, fell seriously ill while watching a Newcastle match with friends during a holiday in Tala, near Paphos. Originally thinking it was food poisoning, Sarah Wright witnessed her husband's condition quickly decline, leading to a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis with necrosis after admission to a local clinic. Since May 30, Ian has been receiving critical care, including dialysis and multi-organ support, at Nicosia General Hospital. ‌ His mother, Monica Muckle, 67, rushed to Cyprus and has been by his side since May 22, desperate to bring him back home. The private jet required for Ian's safe return, staffed by a medical team, comes with a quote of £40,995. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here ‌ With funds depleting as they extend their stay in Cyprus, Monica shared with Chronicle Live her heartache at the prospect of leaving Ian behind. She said: "We are absolutely heartbroken because if we have to go home on Monday, he's here on his own. Monica and Ian at Ian and Sarah's wedding (Image: Submitted - Sarah Wright ) "The thought of it is just horrendous. He knows we're there, and the thought of going in on Sunday and saying to him we've got to go home and not even be able to tell him that he's going to be following us because we just don't know." Article continues below Ian and Sarah, who hold an annual travel insurance policy, faced a setback when Ian's failure to disclose his medical consultations for high blood pressure and high uric acid in the UK led AXA, their travel company, to refuse the payout. Their plight prompted Sarah's friend and colleague, Lucy Wareing, to initiate a GoFundMe campaign which has successfully gathered nearly £9,000. Initially aimed at covering the family's costs in Cyprus, the focus shifted to conserving funds for Ian's repatriation once the gravity of his situation became apparent. Monica, speaking on behalf of the family, said: "We're trying to keep hold of money we have got from the fund. ‌ "We want him home and we don't want to be spending money that's going to go towards helping him to get home." The family is exploring the possibility of utilising Ian's workplace pension to help with repatriation expenses, although they are uncertain about the timeframe for accessing these funds. Monica has been tirelessly working into the early hours to reach out to charities, despite most offering assistance primarily to families of deceased individuals abroad. In addition to their own efforts, the family is receiving support from the British Consulate in Cyprus, which is aiding with language barriers and providing updates from the hospital. ‌ Reflecting on the ordeal, Monica said: "As you get older, you realise how important it is to put things like that on the travel insurance. We're not holding out any hope where that is concerned. "We're not trying to scrounge, that's why we're looking into the pensions because if we can get that, maybe it won't be enough for all of it, but it could cover a fair proportion and maybe we can crack on getting family and friends to help us a bit more. "We don't want to beg for money, we want to be able to get the money through whatever ways we can. We're still having to take it a day at a time, but we just want him home." Article continues below

Elgin mum-of-four's cancer shock after going private to end 18-month NHS wait

An Elgin mum-of-four only learned she had cancer after paying around £15,000 to go private when faced with an 18-month wait on the NHS. Sarah Beaton first visited her GP in June 2024 after suffering from heavy periods. Following multiple visits to her surgery, she was referred for a scan which she received in January this year. The results showed there were anomalies. It was initially thought to be a fibroid, which is a benign non-cancerous growth. But the 43-year-old, who lives just outside of Elgin, was told she would need referred to the gynaecology department at NHS Grampian. Speaking to the P&J, she said: 'I was told there would be an 18-month waiting list for a consultation with a gynaecologist. 'I wasn't very happy because obviously I've been suffering with it for quite a while, and they said to just carry on with the same tablets until I could get a consultation.' The GP told her they would probably recommend a hysteroscopy, a test to look inside a woman's womb, to remove the fibroid which should solve the problem. Frightened by the length of wait, Sarah and her husband Bill Beaton, who run a farming contractor company, decided they would pay for private treatment. Within a week, she had a scan at Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen and a hysteroscopy was scheduled for the following month. But the results proved to be a shock as what was removed wasn't in fact a fibroid, but a mass of cells, which turned out to be endometrial cancer. The mum-of-four last month received a total hysterectomy to remove her womb at the private hospital. Now recovering from the operation at home, she is waiting to find out if further treatment is required. Reflecting on her experience, Sarah told the P&J: 'Had we not gone private, I'd be sitting here still waiting. 'You'll be going about your day and thinking 'I'm lucky' but if I hadn't done that, where would I be in 18 months time? 'What sort of stage would it be? Would it be recoverable? 'We're in a position where we can find that money to do that but there are hundreds who are not like me and are not in that position who at the end will have to incur a lot more treatment than if they were seen sooner.' She added: 'There was no inclination it was anything else until we got that result. It was quite a shock.' Highlands and Island Tory MSP Douglas Ross raised Sarah's 'intolerable' wait at First Minister's Questions on Thursday. John Swinney described the situation as 'unacceptable' and insisted the SNP government is investing more in early intervention to avoid these long waits. Mr Ross said: 'It doesn't bear thinking what the outlook for Sarah may have been had she sat on an NHS waiting list for 18 months before being seen by a specialist and the cancer being uncovered.' The latest NHS Grampian waiting times figures for June show that where gynaecology patients are referred with a suspicion of cancer, 90% are seen within nine weeks. Urgent cases are seen in around 25 weeks, while cases assessed as routine are a 64-week wait. An NHS Grampian spokesman said: 'Behind waiting time figures are real people, with real concerns about their health, and an extremely hard-working clinical team doing their utmost to care for them. 'We are aware patients are often waiting longer for services than they or we would like and we'd apologise to anyone affected by this. 'As a health board we cannot comment on individual patient cases. When a patient, or their representative, makes direct contact with us we are more than willing to discuss their case with them – including their diagnosis, treatment and any further care they received.'

While she's been making big money on the platform, having claimed to have taken home £700,000 in 2022, Sarah has found herself the target of cruel trolling. Taking to Instagram to confront her latest bully, she sarcastically responded to their nasty comment. The follower had written: "Yeah why not just make sure your kids get bullied because of your content just so you can get a little validation from people you don't know, good idea." But Sarah - who shares son Stanley, nine, with her husband Jonathan Smith - made sure to clap back with humour, pretending to read a positive one in a get-ready-with-me video. With the aforementioned jibe shown on the screen, she instead read: "Thanks for your inspiring content. Your son is really lucky to have a mom like you that loves him so much. Please show us some more of your outfits." Sarah then enthused: "Of course I will! What a kind, kind comment. Thank you. I will happily show you another outfit," before proceding to talk her fans through what she had been wearing. At the end, she concluded: "Thanks again for that really, really lovely, positive comment." The actress quit the Channel 4 soap for a career on OnlyFans three years ago. Hollyoaks said it doesn't allow cast members to be active on certain 18+ websites because of the show's responsibility to its young audience. Axed Hollyoaks star reveals she's now a pole dancing teacher as she shows off her moves in thong and high heels Speaking about posting on OnlyFans before, Sarah said it was "about taking back control, about empowerment and confidence and having full power over my choices". More recently, Sarah revealed her new job after quitting the soap, and will be teaching her first ever pole class. Sharing images of herself pole dancing, the actress penned: 'I'm excited and terrified in equal measure… because very soon, I'll be stepping into a whole new challenge- teaching my first beginners' pole class! 'Pole has been a huge part of my life for over two years now. I first found it just after lockdown, a little before turning 41, when I was looking for something fun, but challenging. 'From the very first spin, I was hooked. What started as a way to move and push myself has become so much more- strength, confidence, and a whole new community of incredible, supportive people who lift each other up (literally!).' 7 She shares son Stanley, nine, with her husband Jonathan Smith Credit: Instagram 7 Sarah has been making six figures on OnlyFans Credit: Instagram 7 She has been posting images of herself pole dancing recently Credit: instagram Sarah continued: 'I've recently started 1:1 training with a new pole coach, and I can already feel myself improving in ways I never expected. 'Pole is as tough as it is beautiful, what looks effortless takes an insane amount of strength, control, and resilience. But that's what I love about it. Every move mastered feels like a little victory, and there's always a new challenge to take on. 'Now, I'm about to take the next step, sharing everything I've learned with others. My beginner's classes will be for absolute newbies or anyone wanting to go back to basics! 'I'll be teaching at the same studio where my journey began too which is exciting @PoleGymholmeschapel, and I can't wait to help others discover just how empowering pole can be.' Sarah showed off her toned physique in the carousel of images, as she promoted her new pole class. She worte a sparkly leotard and had her hair in a colourful plait as she revealed her pole skills for her fans. One person commented: 'These photos are mind boggling @sarahjaynedunn they're full of warrior woman power and I love them! You'll be amazing. You've excelled at this and been so determined. All the joys!' Someone else penned: 'Wow you look incredible Sarah, I remember when you first started, amazing how far you've come. So pleased for you, all the best for your next chapter.' And another added: 'You will be wonderful we just know it. Our gorgeous girl who can achieve anything she puts her mind to.' It's not the first time that Sarah has shown off her sensational figure in a skimpy pole dancing outfit. The star has been praised for her toned body after completely transforming her physique. She looked ageless as she shared a series of photographs after working out and doing some intense pole dancing. "My knees have almost recovered," Sarah penned in the caption of her sizzling set of snaps, revealing that she suffered some pain after her intense work out sessions. She went on to add: "If you missed my stories last month, I had the BEST workshop with @dapnelux, is was a HUGE challenge- those moves were FAST, especially tying them all together to music!" Sarah added: "I left feeling tired but inspired to sign up for more workshops this year with this wonderful community of supportive women. "I've got much further to go before I'm anywhere near as slick as Daphne (although she has been at it much longer than me!) but what an inspiration!" One fan remarked: "You look absolutely amazing. Your body shape has changed so much. Great job." A second said: "I can't believe how much your physic has changed! Looking fab!" 7 The former soap star played the role of Mandy Richardson from 1996 to 2001 Credit: Lime Pictures
