Israeli strikes kill over 115 Palestinians since morning amid Trump visit to region

Al Bawaba15-05-2025

ALBAWABA- Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip killed at least 115 Palestinians on Thursday, in one of the deadliest single-day escalations in weeks, according to health officials and emergency responders.
The bombardment coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the region, as ceasefire talks remain stalled.
In Khan Younis, southern Gaza, 56 people, including women and children, were killed overnight when Israeli forces bombed homes and tents sheltering displaced families, according to staff at Nasser Hospital. Among the victims were 36 children, local doctors said, with entire families reportedly wiped out in the strikes.
The Israeli army said its operations targeted Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters, claiming the attacks were part of preparations for an expanded ground offensive.
Elsewhere, the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency reported more casualties in the northern town of Jabalia, where a health clinic and a prayer hall in the refugee camp were bombed. Thirteen people were confirmed dead there.
Thursday morning, the streets of Khan Younis were filled with funeral processions. A resident described the scene at Nasser hospital to BBC Arabic as 'unbearable,' saying the morgue was overflowing and bodies were placed in corridors.
Doctors, overwhelmed by the influx of casualties with severe injuries, were treating patients on the floor due to a shortage of beds. "Tragically, this level of destruction has become part of daily life," the man said, lamenting the continued civilian toll.
Footage shared by local activists showed dozens of bodies wrapped in white shrouds laid out in a cemetery, as an imam led prayers for mourning families.
The deadly wave of attacks comes as indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel continue with no breakthrough, despite mounting international pressure for a ceasefire.

Israeli assaults kill 80, wound hundreds in Gaza since morning

ALBAWABA- At least 80 Palestinians have been killed and 363 injured in Israeli military operations across Gaza since dawn today, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Hospital sources report that 78 of the deaths resulted from Israeli attacks in various parts of the Strip, with Al-Awda Hospital confirming three fatalities from a drone strike west of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. The Health Ministry also reported a rising toll among civilians waiting for humanitarian assistance, with 224 now confirmed dead and 1,858 injured while seeking aid. Amid the growing humanitarian catastrophe, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) issued a sharp rebuke of the Israeli-American aid delivery model in Gaza, calling it dangerous, ineffective, and a distraction from ongoing atrocities. 'This model wastes resources and does not address the core issue: Israel must lift the blockade and allow us safe and unrestricted access to deliver life-saving assistance,' a UNRWA statement read. Meanwhile, Israel's public broadcaster reported that four Israeli soldiers were wounded in two separate incidents in Khan Yunis. One attack involved an armed Palestinian cell firing a rocket at a tank, injuring two soldiers from the 74th Armored Battalion. International diplomatic tensions are also intensifying. The U.S. reportedly sent a confidential cable discouraging allies from participating in a UN conference on a two-state solution, expressing opposition to any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. The memo, cited by Reuters, warned that actions viewed as hostile to Israel could be seen as contrary to U.S. interests and might carry consequences. The United Nations continues to face Israeli resistance in accessing fuel reserves in Rafah, crucial for humanitarian operations. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added that over 10,000 critically ill patients in Gaza still require urgent medical evacuation and called for immediate approval of all crossing points to facilitate transfers.

Jordan on Wednesday received the fourth group of patients from the Gaza Strip as part of the "Jordanian Medical Corridor" initiative, which aims to evacuate 2,000 ailing children from Gaza to receive treatment in Jordanian hospitals. A total of 16 patients and 44 accompanying family members arrived in Jordan today. Among them, four patients were airlifted from Gaza to Marka Military Airport, with the support of the Jordan Armed Forces, the Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, 12 patients entered Jordan by land through the King Hussein Bridge in the southern Jordan Valley. They were then transferred via Royal Jordanian Air Force aircraft to Marka Airport, and subsequently to the King Hussein Cancer Center or other hospitals as needed. Since the launch of the initiative under royal directives in early March, Jordan has received 39 children and 75 family members across three previous phases. Seventeen children, along with their families, have since returned to Gaza following the completion of their treatment. The first group arrived on March 4, with 29 children accompanied by 44 family members. The second group was received on May 14 and included four children battling cancer and 12 relatives. The third group arrived on May 20, with six cancer patients and 19 accompanying family members. His Majesty King Abdullah II announced the initiative during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on February 11, 2025.
