Bengaluru stampede: Maharaja Trophy likely to be shifted out of M Chinnaswamy stadium; Alur, Mysore likely venues
Bengaluru:
With police permission still elusive, Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament, scheduled from August 11 to 27 is likely to be moved out of the M Chinnaswamy stadium to either KSCA Alur Stadium, on Bengaluru's outskirts, or the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar ground in Mysuru.
On July 11, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced that the fourth edition of the annual franchise-based tournament will be a closed-door event. It is learnt that the city police are yet to give the tournament a go-ahead. Confirming this, a source told TOI that they're looking at other venues.
The Bengaluru stadium witnessed a stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory parade in early June, which claimed 11 lives.
There have been questions raised on the infrastructure and safety measures at the 50-year-old stadium, which was further highlighted in the Justice D'Cunha report submitted to the state government last week. Although the event has been announced as a closed-door event, apprehensions remain.
'…..Until such infrastructural changes are made, continuing to host high-attendance events at the current location poses unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility and emergency preparedness.'

While KSCA president Raghuram Bhat was unavailable for comments, Bengaluru City police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh was non-committal: 'We have received a proposal and the same has been sent to the jurisdiction police station for verification.'
FRANCHISES MIFFED
Multiple franchises TOI spoke to are miffed with the prevailing uncertainties. They are expected to meet on Friday evening to discuss the further course of action.
A franchise representative said, 'KSCA has taken the franchises for granted. We are the major stakeholders, and they have to respect that. Barring one unofficial communication from a managing committee member, we have no other information from the association.'
With premier hotels booked and logistics worked out, the franchises are now worried about the losses they will incur. 'No hotel is going to give us a 100% refund.
We've spent several lakhs to book almost two dozen rooms in a five-star hotel. This apart, if the tournament moves from here, it is going to be a logistical nightmare,' said a stakeholder from another franchise.
The two venues being considered come with different challenges. The Alur facility, which is ideal cricket-wise, has no floodlights or spectator galleries. Which means the tournament will have to be held during the day, which makes it unsuitable for franchises and broadcasters.
'We agreed to play closed door, but our sponsorship proposals were based on the live coverage on a national sports channel. There will be legal implications for us if the sponsors pull out, since Alur also does not have permanent broadcast facilities. It is a joke if we have to play Maharaja Trophy like local league matches,' lamented a team official.
Mysuru, which has a good stadium with four wickets, will be in a race against time to get its four wickets up and running, with rain being a constant in the area for over a month, leading to most of the league matches being postponed or called off.

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Mohammed Siraj's bizarre blunder leaves Prasidh Krishna red-faced
Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj (Images via Getty Images & AP) Harry Brook has been England's most dangerous presence at the crease so far on Day 4 of the fifth and final Test, pushing India onto the back foot with his aggressive approach. But one moment in particular summed up the dramatic swings in this match and left India pacer Prasidh Krishna red-faced. In the 35th over of England's chase, Brook top-edged a pull shot off Prasidh and the ball went high into the air. Mohammed Siraj at long leg took the catch cleanly, prompting Prasidh to break into celebration. The pacer stretched his arms out wide in triumph, walking in front of Brook as if the contest had turned. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! However, he had missed one crucial detail. Siraj, in the act of completing the catch, had taken a step back and touched the boundary cushions with his foot and then crossed it altogether. That meant it wasn't a wicket, but rather, six runs. Brook, fully aware of the situation, calmly walked back to the crease, while Prasidh's face quickly turned to one of disappointment. His celebration abruptly ended as he realised what had happened. Siraj, too, had his hands on his head in disbelief, visibly frustrated at his misjudgment. However, things remained jovial between Siraj and Prasidh as the two shared an embrace at lunch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The moment summed up a difficult phase for India, as Brook continued to chip away at the target. 'AB de Villiers better than half internationals...': Steyn's bold IPL claim gets corrected; ‘Half? Make it 90 per cent'
Legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn made an audacious claim while comparing AB de Villiers to current international cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL), following the latter's heroics for South Africa Champions in the recently concluded World Championship of Legends. AB de Villiers scored three tons in four matches in WCL 2025 De Villiers, now a retired international batter, turned back the clock on Saturday at Edgbaston in Birmingham, scoring a 47-ball century to help South Africa beat Pakistan Champions by nine wickets in the final of the second WCL season. It was his third century in just four innings in the tournament. Following his Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament-winning performance, Steyn took to social media to assert that de Villiers is better than half the international cricketers currently playing in the IPL — or possibly more. However, fans were quick to correct him, insisting that de Villiers is better than 90 per cent of today's IPL batters. 'Unpopular/Popular opinion. Ab is still better than half the internationals at IPL. Maybe even more,' Steyn wrote on X. Chasing 196 at Edgbaston, De Villiers was at his vintage best, smashing an unbeaten 120 off just 60 balls. His knock, studded with 10 boundaries and eight sixes, featured a crucial 72-run opening stand with Hashim Amla, followed by an unbroken 125-run partnership with JP Duminy, who scored a fluent 51*. Earlier, Pakistan Champions—who reached the final after India refused to play them in the WCL semifinals due to ongoing geopolitical tensions—opted to bat first after winning the toss. Opener Sharjeel Khan gave Pakistan a flying start with a sublime 76 off 44 balls, putting on a 76-run stand with Shoaib Malik. However, the momentum dipped in the middle overs as Hardus Viljoen and Wayne Parnell picked up two wickets each. De Villiers finished WCL 2025 with 429 runs, including three centuries.
