Dover as the All-Star Race? Watkins Glen in May?
Those were the two somewhat startling reveals of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. In fact, some might be scratching their heads asking, "what are they thinking?"
Speedway Motorsports has the All-Star Race and wanted North Wilkesboro to have a points race on the 30th anniversary of the last points race at the track. Nothing wrong with that.
But of all its tracks, it chose Dover, a track that doesn't have lights. So most likely, this will be a daytime race.
Now, where temperatures are concerned, Dover in May is likely going to be cooler than Dover in hot July. And it is a short track, at one mile in length. It will be an intriguing All-Star Race — one that fans should want to watch since it will be unique.
But what about Nashville?
Maybe the idea was to wait to see if the Fairgrounds deal could be pushed through and then bring the All-Star Race there. Or Bristol? That has some of the same challenges as Dover, but it would also differentiate the two Bristol events.

"We worked with Speedway Motorsports on the shift there," NASCAR Executive Vice President Ben Kennedy said. "Part of it was taking into consideration whether moving them into May felt like it was a better time of year from at least a heat perspective, and we considered a handful of other tracks as well. We felt like that one was the best.
NASCAR Executive Ben Kennedy speaks during the NASCAR Awards and Champion Celebration at the Charlotte Convention Center in Nov. 2024
"A number of considerations just as we think about each one of these moves, and Dover was the best option that we had for '26."
If the All-Star Race went to Bristol, that would mean adding another track in the early months of the schedule. And the decision to move Watkins Glen shows there are limited options.
Richmond had enough success with a recent Saturday night summer race that it appears a summer Saturday night works best for its one event.
Could Iowa have moved to May? Possibly, although then it would likely be within a week or two of the Kansas race. Maybe St. Louis? Sonoma?
So, yes, it is a little bit of a challenge. But camping in August at Watkins Glen seems like the perfect time.
NASCAR's Jusan Hamlin, who is managing director for racing operations and handles much of the schedule issues, is from that area of New York and is hopeful the new date will work.
"The cool thing about having the race take place that time of year, school is still in session. The population of central New York is much higher that time of year, so you have the opportunity to potentially reach a fan demographic up there that's typically not around during the summer," Hamlin said.

"As far as weather goes, we look at a lot of data at all our venues, and weather is always certainly a consideration. You look at that time of the year. It says on average lower 70s during the day, chance of rain is relatively low even compared to August."
Whether upstate New York will be recovering from a spring snow remains to be seen, but it is nothing that NASCAR hasn't dealt with in March and April at some venues.
There's lots to like in the 2026 Cup schedule.
Homestead as the finale and the addition of points races at San Diego (Naval Base Coronado), Chicagoland and North Wilkesboro should all generate excitement.
But as a series generates excitement, it often generates questions. We'll see how these two work out.

Should the Cowboys be confident Micah Parsons plays Week 1?

Yahoo Sports host Andrew Siciliano and NFL writer Charles McDonald react to Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer's comments that he expects the All-Pro defensive end to play in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript We got some news, Charles, as we're coming on the air. Brian Schottenheimer was doing his end of day Cowboys presser at the Star of the Ford Center. In Frisco, Texas. And how about this? He said he's pretty confident that Micah Parsons will be on the field week number one. He is still holding in. He still wants that deal. Adam Schefter said yesterday they are destined for a divorce. But when asked, are you confident? He said, Yeah, I feel good about it and confident, yes, I am. I'll be honest, I think it's the right thing for him to say. Um, I'm kind of surprised that he sounds as confident as that quote reads on paper though. Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, if he's wrong, he could just say, well, I don't make the decisions like that, you know, you gotta talk to Jerry. It's not confident I was confident, not so much. I'm confident. I, I, man, this is a tough situation because on one hand, I mean this is what the Cowboys have done in the past couple of years, right? With the Dak Prescott contracts, EA you wait until the last couple of days of training camp and boom, like there's your big cowboy story right as we're walking into week one. So I wouldn't be surprised if that happened now. Uh, I mean, I, I, I just can't imagine a world where you trade Micah Parsons. I, I don't care if you could get 11th round picks for him. It's so hard to find. Like a bona fide Hall of Fame, first round Hall of Fame player that's fully in the prime, you know, will be in their prime for the next, you know, what? 7-8 years potentially. Um, it's just I, I, we, we've talked a bunch about this on our show with Nate Ty Football 301 about how just kind of confusing this is, but ultimately at the end of the day, I do think Micah Parsons comes back because you need him back. I, I'm with you and I, I keep hammering home to people. They play in the opener. They play on Thursday. They play two weeks from tomorrow. This isn't like the Dak deal where Dak was there, right? And then they hit send on the press release at like 7 a.m. 8 a.m., whatever it was, on Sunday morning of week one. This one's a little bit different. I would argue you can trade Micah Parsons, but if you're gonna do it, it had to be in March or it had to be in April, and you, you had to have been able to navigate your offseason understanding that he wouldn't be there and have draft capital from the as you were on the clock in April to try to make this defense better right now, but to trade him now to pull a Khalil Mack, for example, when you think, when you, you demand, when you, when Jerry Jones says, you know, his window is closing like as an old man, and you want to win now, allegedly, like you, it only sinks your team. If you, if you're gonna do it, you had to have done it months ago, my 2 cents, and trading him now helps nobody other than the team you're trading him to. Close

'Getting better': Still not 100%, Elly De La Cruz flashes speed again for Cincinnati Reds

ANAHEIM, California – Before the opener of the Cincinnati Reds' three-game series this week against the Angels, a Southern California writer asked Reds manager Terry Francona how much he appreciated Elly De La Cruz playing through the 'little quad' issue he's been dealing with much of the summer. 'I'm not sure I'd say 'little,' ' Francona said. 'I mean, that thing was pretty (not little). He's done a really good job.' Over the weekend Francona suggested the worst of the issue was behind De La Cruz. And then in the second game of the Angels series, the two-time All-Star shortstop flashed the kind of ground speed that backed up his manager – scoring twice from first on balls that barely reached the outfield. 'He's the only guy in baseball that scores on those,' Francona said. Asked if those 270-foot sprints that had been missing from his arsenal for more than a month were a sign the left quad injury is behind him, De La Cruz said, 'We're getting better.' So it's not quite 100%, he was asked. 'We're getting better,' he repeated. Whatever his level of quadriceps health, those two runs Tuesday night represented the winning margin in a 6-4 victory that lifted the Reds to a season-high seven games over .500 (67-60) and kept them just one game back of the New York Mets for the final playoff position in the National League. 'He's had to manage that quad for a while, and I think he's managed it really well,' Francona said over the weekend. 'I think he's coming through the other side of that to where his speed is up. It's not quite where it would be, but he's on this (improving) trajectory.' Whether it's impacted his power, De La Cruz – who leads the Reds with 19 home runs − has hit only one since June 23. He also leads the Reds with 31 stolen bases, but that's far off the pace of his league-leading 67 total last season, and he has just six attempts since the All-Star break (6-for-6). But he's still getting hits and getting on base, including a .263 average and .333 on-base percentage in his last nine games. The Reds are 6-3 in those games. 'It's about everything,' he said. 'We've got to find a way to win. Every day. Every day we play together and we find a way.' De La Cruz hasn't missed a game this season and is emphatic about wanting to stay in the lineup. Which didn't surprise the Reds' first-year manager. 'That reputation preceded me coming here,' Francona said. This story was updated to add a gallery. Dustin Pedroia knows consequences Francisco Alvarez faces from 'doable' injury plan

Sign up Now WASHINGTON — Francisco Alvarez will attempt to postpone surgery on a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, grip a bat while compromised and still be able to make throws while nursing that thumb. That Alvarez wants to try to return to the club in time for the stretch run and perhaps postseason is both admirable and somewhat difficult to envision. There are not many who know what awaits the Mets catcher. But there are a few. Advertisement 'It's doable,' reported Dustin Pedroia, who would know. 'The pain — it is what it is. It's going to suck.' The best-case scenario for Alvarez became the best-case scenario for Pedroia, who learned to live and play with the pain, ripped off an All-Star and Gold Glove season and then helped the Red Sox win a World Series championship.
