Shocking vandalism rampage in downtown L.A. sparks outrage as LAPD seeks suspects
On Saturday night, more than 1,000 people were drawn to an illegal party that was promoted online, according to a statement from Mayor Karen Bass' office. The crowd then descended onto Washington Boulevard and Maple Avenue after midnight, where some tagged storefronts and a passing A Line train.
At one point, members of the crowd posed for selfies with a tagged Los Angeles Police Department cruiser and the Metro train that was stuck on the tracks, footage from news service OnScene.TV showed.
Bass condemned the behavior in a statement Monday.
'It is unacceptable under any and all circumstances,' the mayor said during a Memorial Day event in Boyle Heights. 'And those people who perpetrated this have to be held accountable to the full extent of the law.'
A special unit with the LAPD's Newton Division that monitors illegal types of events became aware of the party and notified the Los Angeles Fire Department's fire marshal. Officers from multiple bureaus responded to downtown for support as the crowd spilled into the streets, but they were overwhelmed and some officers were assaulted over the next three hours, authorities said.
One officer was hit in the face with a bottle and required medical attention, the mayor's office said. Video showed dozens of LAPD officers in riot gear across the street from the party crowd, carrying weapons that fire nonlethal rounds for crowd control.
The crowd was eventually dispersed but no arrests have been made. Police said they are reviewing camera footage from the area to try and identify suspects.

Police are searching for at least three hit-and-run drivers who struck and killed a 61-year-old pedestrian in Baldwin Hills on Sunday night. Police arrest suspected gunman who shot at driver in Los Angeles nightclub crash
Police have arrested a man suspected of opening fire at the driver accused of plowing his vehicle into a crowd and injuring dozens of people outside a popular Los Angeles nightclub in July. Efrain Villalobos, 28, was arrested on Aug. 3 in Redondo Beach, a coastal city about 21 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His arrest comes just days after police had identified Villalobos as the suspected gunman in the July 19 shooting. In the early hours of July 19, a vehicle crashed into a packed crowd, leaving the Vermont Hollywood nightclub in the busy neighborhood of East Hollywood. After the crash, police said bystanders pulled the driver out of the vehicle and attacked him. During the altercation, police said a man — later identified as Villalobos — approached the scene from across the street and shot the driver once in the lower back. The suspect then fled from the scene on foot and remained at large for about two weeks. Villalobos was booked on suspicion of attempted murder without bail, police said in an updated statement on Aug. 4. They did not provide additional details on his arrest but said the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration. 2 dead after head-on crash in San Fernando Valley
Two people were killed in a head-on, two-car crash in the Shadow Hills part of the San Fernando Valley on Monday afternoon. It happened at around 3:45 p.m. on Wentworth Street near Wheatland Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters said that two people were found trapped inside the wreckage from the crash, one inside each vehicle. There was no information provided on either of the victims or what caused the collision. Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division investigators will be handling the case.
