July 23 verdict for 13 teens charged with murder of Lahad Datu vocational college student
The verdict, initially scheduled for today, was postponed to allow for clarification related to the submissions, according to deputy public prosecutor, Nur Nisla Abdul Latif.
She said that both prosecution and defence had filed their written submissions. The prosecution had filed a total of 366 pages of written submission.
'The defence team, comprising eight lawyers, has also filed their submissions,' she told reporters at the High Court, here, today.
On May 14, High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol had set today to decide on the Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat murder case.
However, a notice issued by the High Court yesterday (June 10) informed parties of the rescheduling.
On February 28, Duncan ordered the 13 teenagers, aged 16 to 19, to enter their defence on the charge of murdering Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat, 17, in the dormitory rooms 7 Resak and 5 Belian at the Lahad Datu Vocational College, between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am on March 22, 2024.
They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read together with Section 34 of the same Code which carries the death penalty, or up to 40 years' imprisonment and not more than 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted.
The defence proceedings began on March 10, with 18 witnesses, including all 13 accused, called to testify.
The prosecution had earlier opened its case on November 19 last year, calling 25 witnesses, including students and teachers from the vocational college.
Apart from Nur Nisla, the prosecution team also includes DPPs Ng Juhn Tao and Batrisyia Mohd Khusri.
Eight of the students were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Kamarudin Mohmad Chinki and Chen Wen Jye, while five others were represented by lawyers Mohamed Zairi Zainal Abidin, Abdul Ghani Zelika, Vivian Thien, Jhesseny P. Kang and Kusni Ambotuwo. — Bernama

AGC orders inquest into Zara Qairina's death to determine possible criminal elements
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Attorney General's Chambers has today decided to hold an inquest into the death of Zara Qairina on August 12, 2025. In a statement, it said the decision was made after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the police. 'The purpose of this inquest is to determine the cause and circumstances of death, including whether there were any criminal elements involved in Zara Qairina's death,' it said. 'This process will be conducted by the Coroner's Court independently and transparently in accordance with the law,' it added. The inquest will be conducted under subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593). This comes after Bukit Aman Special Task Force has taken over the investigation into the case.

Armed Forces officers arrested over alleged RM5m smuggling ring in southern Malaysia
PETALING JAYA, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has reportedly arrested five senior Armed Forces officers and five civilians over their alleged involvement in a smuggling syndicate in the country's south. Citing an anonymous source, Free Malaysia Today reported that the officers, allegedly from the Armed Forces' intelligence division, were suspected of colluding with the syndicate for about five years, receiving RM30,000 to RM50,000 per smuggling trip. They allegedly leaked operational information and facilitated the entry of contraband, including drugs, cigarettes and other banned goods worth about RM5 million each month. MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya reportedly confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, warning that such activities posed a threat to national security. MACC also reportedly seized RM63,000 in cash, drugs, weighing equipment, liquor and imitation firearms during the operation in the Klang Valley this morning. One of the civilians arrested — an Indonesian woman — is believed to be the mistress of one of the officers, and was reportedly without valid travel documents. Ahmad Khusairi reportedly said that the suspects would be brought to the Putrajaya magistrates' court tomorrow for a remand application.

GOF seizes over 6,800 gas cylinders worth RM1.03m in Kuala Lipis raid
KUANTAN, Aug 13 — The Southeast Brigade General Operations Force (GOF) has seized 6,834 gas cylinders of various brands and weights worth RM1.03 million in a raid in the Tempoyang Industrial Area, Mukim Kuala Lipis. Southeast Brigade GOF commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said 6,155 empty cylinders and 679 filled cylinders, along with a vehicle, a forklift and gas storage cages, were seized during the Op Taring Bravo 3 at about 4.30 pm last Monday (Aug 11). 'Checks found that the premises were storing subsidised and industrial gas without a valid licence. The premises' caretaker, a 41-year-old man, was arrested to assist in the investigation,' he said in a statement today. All items seized were handed over to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's enforcement unit in Pahang for further action, and the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. In Petaling Jaya, police detained four men and seized diesel believed to have been misappropriated, along with various equipment, with an estimated value of RM602,220, in two separate raids in Jalan PJU 1/23 today. Battalion 4 GOF commanding officer Supt Jafri Muhamad said the special operation, held from 12.30 am to 1.30 am, was conducted in collaboration with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. 'In the first raid, we detained four men, including two Myanmar nationals, and seized 2,500 litres of diesel, two lorry heads, a lorry, four IBC-type tanks, a skid tank, two digital suction pumps, and five mobile phones. 'In the second raid, we found 8,000 litres of diesel, a skid tank, and a suction pump with rubber hoses believed to have been used for the illegal transfer and storage of diesel,' he said in a statement.
