Fifteen years of all-star fun…
Abu Dhabi's own island of thrills, Yas Island, is celebrating its fifteenth birthday – and on that note, here are 15 things to do, see, and experience on Yas Island. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
This is the ultimate celebration of the world's favourite supercar. From the fastest rollercoaster in the world, to simulator experiences, to an incredible Italian restaurant, to a roof-walking experience – all Ferrari themed – you'll want to visit Ferrari World Abu Dhabi if you're a Ferrari fan. If you're not, visit and become one. CLYMB Abu Dhabi
Long before you enter the building, you'll see it – a rock-shaped roof by Yas Mall that mysteriously pulls you closer until you realise you're inside. Double Guinness World Record holder, CLYMB Abu Dhabi boasts the world's largest indoor skydiving wind tunnel (32ft. in diametre and 179.2ft in height), plus the world's tallest indoor artificial climbing wall (138ft). Did we also mention it was fabulously fun? Yas Marina Circuit
All else aside, this is the home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – the season closer and arguably the most thrilling race on the Formula 1 calendar. It's more than a race though – it's the ultimate weekend of fun, entertainment, adrenaline-soaked achievements, record-busting concerts, food, friends, family…the list is endless. But aside from the Abu Dhabi GP, there's more to be enjoyed at YMC throughout the year, such as… Yas Marina Circuit Driving Experiences
If you thought only the seasoned superstars were allowed to take to the asphalt here, there's good news for you: you can, too. Satisfy your need for speed with exclusive experiences. Fancy getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari 458? An Aston Martin GT4? Consider it done. Warner Bros. World™ Abu Dhabi
Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is a fully air-conditioned, indoor theme park spanning 1.65 million square feet, featuring 29 rides and attractions across six immersive zones. It's the perfect destination for fans of DC superheroes, classic cartoons, and family-friendly fun, and whether you're planning the trip for your kids or to roll back the years in a wave of nostalgia, this spot is guaranteed to impress. Etihad Arena
Heavy hitter, indeed. Home to Abu Dhabi's, nay, the UAE's (and usually even the region's) biggest concerts, shows, plays, performances, UFC fights, NBA Games – you name it, this 18,000 capacity entertainment hub stands tall on Yas Island, bringing the best in the world to Abu Dhabi. Yas Bay Waterfront
If we're talking about the Etihad Arena, it's impossible not to think about Yas Bay. Home to some of Abu Dhabi's finest eats, you'll find everything here from an upscale steakhouse to the finest tacos to a good ol' Irish pub. It's also a gorgeous spot to catch the Abu Dhabi sunset, so don't blame yourself if you've realised you just spent a whole day here. Yas Marina
For gorgeous marina views and strolls, Yas Marina is the place to be. It's also home to prized eats such as Cipriani, Mika, Iris and Diablito, and is a lot calmer than other dining hotspots on Yas Bay. Except during Formula One weekend, of course. Etihad Park
Home to Abu Dhabi's Yasalam After Race Concerts, Etihad Park is a 25,000-strong open-air venue (pretty sure we spotted way more fans) that's hosted some of the biggest names in the world. Eminem performed here last December, Metallica is on their way next. This is where you head to during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix once you're done catching the on-track action. Yas Beach
Yas Island, like a lot of Abu Dhabi's other islands, is home to a gorgeous beach of its own. With white sands, clear blue waters and that signature Abu Dhabi tranquility, it's ideal for the beach gateway you've been wanting to take, whether it's just glorious rays or water sports that speak to you. Yas Mall
One of Abu Dhabi's top retail hubs and also its largest, this massive destination by Al Dar Properties features over 370 international brands, 68 dining options, a 24-screen VOX Cinemas multiplex, family entertainment zones and has direct access to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The Fountains
Also a part of Yas Mall, you have to visit The Fountains when you head to Yas Mall, for Abu Dhabi's best dancing fountain show. Shows are 30 minutes long, and you can watch them with or without music. Yas Links
Like the name might suggest, Yas Links Abu Dhabi is the Middle East's first true links golf course. The Par 72 championship course ranks among the world's top courses, and the resort includes a luxurious clubhouse, golf academy, gym, spa, pool, and practice facilities. Like any award-winning golfing facility, it also houses its share of eats, such as Hickory's and Crafty Fox. Yas KartZone
Whether you're a budding racer, or just in the mood for some karting fun, Yas Kartzone offers you an exhilarating karting experience, no matter what your age is. The facility features a 1-kilometer outdoor track with three configurations – and is the ideal fun family outing (or a great setting for a competitive race – whatever you prefer). Yas Waterworld

Alcaraz bludgeons Paul to reach French Open semis

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz steamrolled past American 12th-seed Tommy Paul 6-0 6-1 6-4 at the French Open on Tuesday with a jaw-dropping display of attacking tennis in one of the most one-sided men's quarter-finals in Paris in recent memory. Four-time champion Iga Swiatek, who is looking to become the first woman in the professional era to win four consecutive titles in Paris, also punched her semi-final ticket with a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to set up a mouth-watering semi-final with world number one Aryna Sabalenka. But it was four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz's merciless dismantling of Paul that grabbed the fans' attention, with the 22-year-old Spaniard terrorising the former French Open junior champion who looked like a fish out of water. Alcaraz charged through the first two sets in just 53 minutes and in near flawless fashion, hitting winners at will and chasing down every ball before the shell-shocked American had any time to react. Paul pulled himself together to hold serve and go 4-3 up in the third but as the sun gradually went down over Paris so did the curtain on his inspired run, with Alcaraz winning three games in a row to put him out of his misery in just 94 minutes. "I could close my eyes and everything went in," Alcaraz said. "My feeling was unbelievable. I tried to hit the shots 100% and not think about it." "Today it was one of those matches where everything went in," he said. He will next take on in-form Italian Lorenzo Musetti who battled past American Frances Tiafoe in four sets after surviving a second-set wobble, to reach the French Open semi-finals for the first time. Musetti Warning Musetti, the world number seven, who escaped with a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct when he kicked a ball at a line judge, eventually overran 15th seed Tiafoe. "Honestly it was really unlucky coincidence," said Musetti of the incident. "I was a little bit scared, because I really didn't want to harm nobody, of course. So I immediately went to the line umpire, and I of course said, 'sorry', I apologise to everyone." "It was right to have a warning, but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that and that's why probably just, you know, let me continue my game." That occurred in the second set when Musetti, the only man to reach at least the semi-finals of every main claycourt event this season, was given balls to serve. He kicked one to inadvertently hit the line judge, who barely flinched even though she was hit on her upper body. Grand Slam rules state that players are issued a warning at first instance for any ball abuse. Tiafoe, however, called it 'comical' that there was no serious punishment. "I mean, obviously he did that and nothing happened," said Tiafoe, who had looked surprised and pointed out the incident to the chair umpire. "I think that's comical, but it is what it is. Nothing happened, so there's nothing really to talk about. Obviously it's not consistent, so it is what it is." Earlier, and in front of a sparse crowd around lunchtime, Swiatek braved the windy conditions to beat Svitolina 6-1 7-5. Although Swiatek failed to win a title going into the tournament this season, she looks to have rediscovered her remarkable claycourt form in Paris, stretching her winning run at the French Open to 26 consecutive matches following her title three-peat between 2022-24 to add to her 2020 crown. Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka, hunting her first French Open crown, also needed just two sets to overcome Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and snap her opponent's 10-match winning streak at Roland Garros with a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory. "I think we're all here for one reason," Sabalenka said. "Everyone wants that beautiful trophy. I'm glad I have another opportunity, another semi-final to do better than last time."

Cala Vista: Could this be one of the best Italian restaurants in Dubai?

When you think you've tried all the best Italian restaurants in Dubai… There are some restaurants you hear about, mentally bookmark, but never make it to – until one day, you finally do. For me, Cala Vista, Mina Al Salam was one of them. It opened last year while I was away. Now that I'm back, I've been slowly catching up on all the spots I missed – and let me tell you, Cala Vista officially landed on my 'can't wait to go back' list. I thought I was just checking out another Italian restaurant – turns out, I was late to one of Dubai's best. I know, I know, Dubai isn't exactly lacking when it comes to Italian restaurants – the creamy burratas and tiramisus – we've seen it all. But every now and then, one stands out – and Cala Vista is one of those places. Why? Let's start with the setting Because whether we mean to or not, most of us are wired to judge with our eyes first – and when the setting is on point, everything else gets an early win. At Cala Vista, you're seated right in front of Burj Al Arab – not in the distance, not peeking through buildings, but in full view. Sure, we've seen it from every angle, but this one still stands out – cinematic, a little surreal, always magical. And when the food lands, the same attention to detail carries through. It looks every bit as good as it tastes. The food While I've had more Italian dinners than I can count, this one had a certain spark. We started with the Burrata Pomodori (Dhs95) – creamy and exactly how you want your burrata to be. Then came the Fritto Misto (Dhs135), perfectly crisp and ideal for sharing. The Insalata di Agrumi (Dhs70) – a citrus salad – added a clean, bright contrast to the richness of the other dishes. For mains, the La Piccant e pizza (Dhs125) brought just the right amount of heat with spicy salami. The Agnolotti (Dhs140) – braised oxtail ravioli with aged balsamic – was a favourite. Rich, warming, and deeply satisfying. The Tagliolini al Limone (Dhs130) a signature dish, with homemade pasta tossed in Parmigiano Reggiano. And if you're going with friends, the La Milanese (Dhs310) is the one to share. We finished with two desserts: Il Limone (Dhs70), a lemon sorbet served inside a hollowed Amalfi lemon. And the Bomboloni (Dhs50), fluffy Italian doughnuts with a chocolate dip – easily a favourite. Vista Brunch If you're into the brunch scene in Dubai and love Italian food, Cala Vista should definitely be on your list. Every Sunday, from 12.30pm to 4pm, Head Chef Luca and restaurant manager Pasquale are hosting the Vista Brunch – an Italian-style lunch inspired by their family Sundays growing up. Expect sharing starters, pasta mains, classic sides, and indulgent desserts. There's live music from a roaming band, making it feel like a true celebration of la dolce vita. Low cost airlines may launch standing only seats by 2026

In a move that's bound to spark debate among travelers, several budget airlines are reportedly considering the introduction of standing-only seating by 2026. The controversial new seating concept, designed by Italian manufacturer Aviointeriors, aims to boost capacity and cut costs—but it may come at the expense of passenger comfort. The innovative design, known as the Skyrider 2.0, features padded, bicycle-style saddle seats that allow passengers to lean at an angle rather than sit fully. Unveiled at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg back in 2018, the Skyrider 2.0 promises to increase aircraft capacity by up to 20%. According to Instagram account @entrepreneurshipquote, which has 2.8 million followers, the bicycle-style seats will allow passengers to lean at an angle without completely sitting down. The account further said it could be introduced as early as 2026. Aviointeriors claims that the new design allows for an "ultra-high-density" cabin configuration, opening air travel to a broader market by offering more affordable ticket options. The seats are said to weigh 50% less than traditional economy seats and feature fewer components, reducing maintenance costs for airlines. A screengrab shows the standing only seats designed by Italian manufacturer Aviointeriors. The concept isn't entirely new. A previous version of the Skyrider was introduced in 2010 but failed to gain traction. The upgraded Skyrider 2.0 features firmer mountings with vertical support poles attached to both the ceiling and the floor, rather than a single rail, and includes extra padding for improved comfort. While no airlines have officially confirmed plans to install the seats, Aviointeriors has hinted that implementation could begin as early as 2026—initially on short-haul flights lasting up to two hours. One of the most vocal proponents of the concept has been Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, who previously expressed interest in installing standing-room berths on Boeing 737 aircraft, potentially offering ultra-low-cost tickets priced between £1 and £5. Despite the financial appeal, public reaction on social media has been largely negative. Critics have slammed the concept as inhumane and uncomfortable. 'This is pathetic. Treat humans like humans,' one user commented. Another joked, 'Soon they'll strap you to the wing with an oxygen mask.' Others urged passengers to boycott such seating altogether: 'Please never buy these tickets! Don't support this,' wrote one commenter, while another bluntly added, 'I know slave ship seating when I see it. I'll pass.' Whether the Skyrider 2.0 takes off—or remains grounded—will likely depend on how airlines balance cost savings with customer satisfaction.
