Kota Kinabalu: The prestigious Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) Harvest Festival Cup meeting is scheduled this Sunday (June 1) at Tambalang Racecourse, Tuaran. The day will witness supreme equine athletes battling for the ultimate rights to be champions of Bornean racing. Highlight races for the day includes the Harvest Festival Sprint (1,200m) and the Mile (1,600m). For the Sprint, 11 thoroughbreds are fighting for top position, with Easylights, Kinabalu Prince and Star Empire earmarked as early favourites. The Mile sees David's Sling ready for fierce battle with Kinabalu Star, Summer Glitter and Brilliant One over a challenging and energy-sapping 1,600m. The total prize money for these two marquee races is RM60,000. On the same day, both RSTC and Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (SKM) in close partnership will hold the Jualan Madani Koperasi bazaar – a community-focused initiative aimed at supporting residents with access to affordable daily essentials.
Advertisement This bazaar will take place from 1pm to 5pm at the Racecourse, with many essential items from rice, poultry to packaged food items on steep discount for sale. All residents from nearby villages and communities are welcome to attend. Meanwhile, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick will be the guest-of-honour at the grand racing event and the community bazaar. Historic outing for Sabah athletes

Kota Kinabalu: Seven Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas) athletes representing the country had a historic outing at the World Masters Games held in Chinese Taipei recently. They returned with a record eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals. Lucy Yong competing in the women's 65 category won three gold medals in the 100m, long jump and triple jump events, while Dr Alison Chew in the women's 40 category delivered two golds in the 100m and 400m hurdles as well as two bronzes in the 200m and 400m. The other gold medallists were Juliana Gumpil (women's 60) in pole vault, Bernice Lau Kam Mun (women's 50) in long jump and Datuk Abdul Mulok (men's 70) in pole vault. Juliana also won three silvers in the 80m hurdles, long jump and triple jump with the other silvers came from Shamry Mohd Ali (men's 55) in 100m hurdles and Charlie Lee (men's 65) in high jump, who also delivered one bronze in 100m. Advertisement Team leader Shamry, who is also Samas treasurer, was delighted with the number of medals won by the team. 'This is the most successful outing ever for both Malaysia Masters and Sabah Masters Athletics at a World Masters Games event. 'Our success has been greatly supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sabah Sports Council. 'Credit also to our Masters athletes for their dedication and commitments to undergo rigorous training under the guidance of equally dedicated coaches and officials,' he said. He also said they were able to send a bigger squad this time due to cheaper airfare to Taipei. 'Another contributing factor to our success in winning so many medals this time is the affordability of travelling to Taipei, which is the closest World Masters Games (WMG) venue to Malaysia.' He hoped with the continued success story of Samas, more in the State will be encouraged to join them for training and competing in the future. 'Masters athletics is about providing competitive opportunities for adults aged 35 and above, allowing them to continue participating in and enjoying the sport well beyond the traditional athletic years —with a strong emphasis on lifelong fitness, health, and camaraderie,' he said. 500 paddlers competing at State Championship

Kota Kinabalu: About 500 paddlers representing 15 districts will compete at the Sabah state-level table tennis championship this weekend at Maksak Hall, Likas, here. The competition, running from May 30 to June 1, will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin. The paddlers will compete in the men's and women's team events, as well as the Under-10, 13, 15 and 19 categories for both boys and girls, said Sabah Table Tennis Association president Edward Chua. 'This is a big event hosted by Kota Kinabalu, who have won for three consecutive years so far. We are calling all ping pong supporters to come and watch the games,' said Edward after the presentation of team uniforms to the Kota Kinabalu team at its clubhouse at Wisma Hakka, here. The ceremony was officiated by the Chief Minister's Political Secretary Datuk Dr Roland Chia. The uniforms were sponsored by Kota Kinabalu Table Tennis Association (KKTTA) Advisor Datuk Chua Soon Ping. The championship also serves as a platform to select state players for the national under-10, 12, 15 and 19 tournaments, said Edward. Advertisement 'Every year we have three events to compete in, including the National Hopes, Youth, and Open Championships,' he said, adding that the national championship will be held in Penang in September 2025. This state championship is also an opportunity to gauge the potential of players for next year's Sabah Games, he added. In addition, he said they will hold the Table Tennis Clubs Championship, featuring between 30 and 40 clubs from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, which will offer prize money of RM10,000 to the winning clubs. On the development of table tennis, he said so far, so good, as Kota Kinabalu has about five training centres, which are enough to cater to training and development programmes. 'We run development programmes to produce coaches and umpires. Every year, we conduct a Level 1 coaching course recognised by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), while every two years we hold a Level 2 coaching course,' he said. To date, he said Sabah has produced one female national player who is based in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. 'We will try to select promising young players from the state championship, and we hope to get strong support from parents to let their children be based in Bukit Jalil.
