Consistent efforts to serve quality meals strike a chord with scores of devotees
The Devasthanam launched the 'Nitya Annadanam' scheme 36 years ago with a strong belief that 'Annadanam' is superior compared to any other service. In 1989, August 14, a group of temple employees donated Rs 50,000 to initiate the Nitya Annadanam scheme.
Back then, the inauguration of the scheme was organised under the aegis of the then temple Executive Officer G.V. Narasimha Murthy. In 1989, the Devasthanam employees collected a total of Rs 50,000 as their first donation. The seed sown 36 years back reaped bountiful fruits over the years as the devotees' immense faith, deposits of crores of donations plus the interest earned on them resulted in an uninterrupted execution of Annadanam, satiating the hunger pangs of scores of devotees who arrive at the temple.
Without compromising on quality standards, the scheme's focus has also been on consistent maintenance of the taste for decades. This is one of the main reasons for the scheme to become successful.
Those who savoured the meal in the Devasthanam have one thing to convey, 'There is something 'divine' about the food served in Simhachalam Devasthanam as it is so flavourful.' As per the instructions of the temple's hereditary trustee and Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, temple officials focused on improving the cleanliness and spiritual atmosphere of the temple surroundings and Annadanam Bhavanam premises.
For the financial year of 2024-25, the deposit amount reached Rs 36.45 crore, while the interest earned on it is Rs 2.09 crore. With the interest accrued alone, Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy's Anna Prasadam scheme is being implemented in an uninterrupted manner. According to temple records, since the inception of the scheme, five donors donated Rs 10 lakh or more each. There are 1,217 donors, who have donated Rs 1 lakh and above.
This year alone, more than one million devotees savoured the Anna Prasadam, informed Vendra Trinadha Rao, Executive Officer of the Devasthanam. On special occasions like 'Vaikuntha Ekadasi', annual Kalyanam, 'Chandannotsavam', 'Giri Pradakshina', special Anna Prasadam arrangements have been made additionally to lakhs of devotees.
In coordination with Devasthanam assistant executive officer Vadrevu Ramana Murthy, supervising officer Paluri Narasinga Rao and the staff, steps have been taken to ensure quality food is served to the devotees in a hassle-free manner. As the Annaprasadam scheme enters its 37th year, the Executive Officer of the Devasthanam expressed his gratitude to the donors who continue to support the scheme.

On Wednesday, the DM said he had verified Asha Devi's Aadhaar card, which records her date of birth as Jan 1, 1905. Her appearance in the electoral rolls ignited an online stir after a social media post alleged she had become a voter for the first time at 120 — a claim she rejects outright. "Sabhhay din vote delo chhiye (I have been voting for a long time)," she said in Angika language. Asha Devi attributed her longevity to a simple, stress-free life and frugal eating. Her daily routine includes 'sattu' — roasted gram flour mixed with water and a pinch of rock salt — and a diet dominated by goat's milk and 'roti'. "She took to goat milk in her early days," said panchayat member Md Kabil Hussain, citing her family's account. Widowed in 1995, when her husband died at the age of 90, she has led her family for three decades. She had five sons — three of whom have passed away — and two daughters, along with 13 grandsons, nine granddaughters and several great-grandchildren. If the apex court upholds its previous directive, an estimated 10 lakh stray canines in the national capital will have to be shifted to shelters. What will be the cost to move them? A three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria did not grant a stay on the August 11 order of another bench to municipal authorities. 'Everyone who has come to intervene must take responsibility,' Justice Nath orally observed. The bench also asked all intervenors to file affidavits with supporting evidence. The August 11 SC order on stray dogs On Monday (August 11), a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan ordered the Delhi government, civic bodies and authorities of Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad to start picking up the stray canines and shift them to shelters. The top court directed the creation of dog shelters to initially accommodate around 5,000 stray dogs, which should be sterilised and immunised. Its directive came in a suo motu case. The apex court gave authorities eight weeks to create the facilities and install CCTV monitoring to ensure no animals are released back to the streets. Delhi recorded 26,334 dog bite cases so far this year, compared to 68,090 cases in 2024, PTI reported, citing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) data. The Supreme Court's order divided the country, with many animal lovers, including politicians and celebrities, criticising the ruling. How much will it cost to relocate stray dogs in Delhi? Delhi is estimated to have 10 lakh stray dogs. If the Supreme Court rules in favour of their relocation to shelters, it could prove quite costly. Cash-strapped MCD will have to set aside around Rs 11 crore every day to feed and care for the canines, Hindustan Times (HT) reported, citing the civic body's preliminary assessment. According to officials, at least Rs 110 per day will have to be spent on food, transport, cleaning, medical care, staff, and utilities for each dog. Animal activists predict that housing so many dogs could cost the Delhi government a whopping Rs 10,000 crore — money it does not have. 'First, the government will have to find 1,000, or maybe 2,000, centres because you can't put so many dogs together — they'll fight. So they'll need to find land first. Then, building each centre would cost at least Rs 4-5 crore, since every facility will require caretakers, feeders, and watchmen,' a dog lover told PTI. The dog lover also said it is impossible to shift lakhs of dogs. Currently, MCD rounds up and sterilises over 350 canines daily, releasing them after an observation period of 10 days. The sterilisation process costs about Rs 1,000 per dog. How MCD could implement SC order on stray dogs MCD officials have started mulling locations where shelters for stray dogs can be built in Delhi. An 80-acre plot at Ghogha Dairy for a large shelter, along with other places such as Dwarka Sector 29, is being considered, reported HT. The Supreme Court's final order will determine the scale of relocation of the canines. 'If all dogs have to be relocated, resources can never be practically sufficient,' another civic official told the newspaper. Delhi has not conducted a fresh census of the stray dog population for 16 years. To not carry out enumeration and improve tracking, the civic body is planning to microchip dogs brought to shelters and sterilised. The chips, costing up to Rs 200 each, would contain about five data points, including the canine's history, vaccination, and sterilisation details. Named Da Vinci, the yacht was engulfed in flames, and dramatic footage shows the vessel being completely destroyed. According to reports, all onboard, including four passengers, two crew members and the captain, were safely rescued without injuries. Despite the swift response of rescue teams, the fire was so intense that it could not be contained, and the yacht ultimately sank to the sea floor. The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed. Fire Begins In The Engine Room Luis Gascon, the maritime captain of Ibiza, told Ultima Hora that the yacht sank at 6:19 pm in waters near the Ses Salines Natural Park. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, it reportedly started in the yacht's engine room. Initially, the blaze seemed manageable, but as the rescue team attempted to tow the vessel, the flames in the engine room quickly spiralled out of control, making it impossible to save the yacht. The rescue team, Salvamento Marítimo, shared the video on Instagram and informed, 'Fire broke out on board the Da Vinci vessel, 7.3 miles southwest of Punta Gavina (Formentera). CCS Palma deployed the Guardamar Concepción Arenal and Salvamar Naos, which also transported firefighters. All seven crew members were safely evacuated to shore by the Naos. The fire could not be controlled, and the yacht eventually sank. The Guardamar remains in the area, clearing debris."
