1 High-Risk, High-Reward EV Stock to Buy, and 1 Money Pit to Avoid

Key Points Lucid has recorded six consecutive quarters of record deliveries. VinFast failed to break into the U.S. and European markets. Over $14 billion has been invested in VinFast, and it's still losing money. 10 stocks we like better than Lucid Group › When looking for an investment that can completely change your returns for the better, you need to have an eye on the future. But that's far easier said than done. When thinking about the future, it's an exciting time to contemplate where the automotive industry is going. The future for this sector has some pretty interesting things in store, including driverless vehicles, ones that are software-defined, and a slew of new and highly advanced electric vehicles (EVs) that are almost certainly the eventual future of the industry. If you want to jump into the EV industry, here's a look at one high-risk, high-reward EV start-up and another that investors should avoid. Steer clear of this EV stock VinFast Auto (NASDAQ: VFS) is a unique and intriguing EV start-up. The automaker is based in Vietnam, is backed by an extremely wealthy founder named Pham Nhat Vuong, has state-of-the-art production, and thoroughly dominates its home market. VinFast decided its next move would be to enter the U.S. and European markets, two of the most important globally. The problem: It is always going to be a foreign automaker with no customer base, attempting to get its foot in the door. Not an easy task, and not cheap. After losing billions of dollars to try to become a real player in the U.S. and Europe, Vietnam's richest man is steering the ride in a different direction: focusing on Asian markets such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. But VinFast already looks like a money pit. Consider that at least $14 billion has been poured into it from Vuong himself, his conglomerate Vingroup JSC, its affiliates, and external lenders. Yet in 2024, the company booked a $3.2 billion loss. Making matters worse, Chinese EV start-ups are beginning to expand globally and are finding much more success winning over consumers due to their advanced technology and more affordable pricing. If VinFast can't get a foothold in Asian markets before brutal Chinese competition moves in, it could leave the company playing in only its home market. While it's tempting to invest in young EV start-ups in the hope of them becoming major industry players, the truth is the automotive industry is ruthlessly competitive, and VinFast hasn't cracked the code so far. An accelerating start-up Similar to VinFast, Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) is a high-risk, high-reward EV start-up. The automaker, based in California, says it produces the world's most advanced EVs. Unlike VinFast, however, the company has been able to gain traction in the U.S. market and is starting to emerge as a viable player in the industry. Its sales volume is still low -- Lucid delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter compared to rival Rivian's 10,661 -- but it's gaining momentum with the second quarter representing the sixth consecutive period of record deliveries. The good news is that the trend is likely to continue. The automaker is slated to rapidly accelerate production of its newly launched Gravity electric SUV during the second half of the year. With a price tag far lower than the company's Air sedan, the vehicle is expected to expand the company's addressable market considerably. Another vote of confidence for Lucid, as well as an exciting development in general, was the automaker's recent deal with Uber Technologies and Nuro that is expected to launch later in 2026 in a major U.S. city. The three companies plan to develop a new robotaxi service that combines the leading software-defined vehicle architecture of Lucid's Gravity SUV, the Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system, and Uber's global network and fleet management. Uber plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles over the next six years. The ride-hailing company is also putting its money where its mouth is with a $300 million investment in the automaker. Winners and losers There are going to be some serious winners and losers as the automotive industry gears up to evolve more over the next decade than it arguably has over the past century. Some EV start-ups will certainly close their doors, some already have, while some will become small niche players, and others may grow into the next Tesla or something even more impressive. These are high-risk investments and should remain a small position in any portfolio. Lucid is also burning cash at a rapid rate and will likely have to raise more. All that said, it shows far more upside than foreign rival VinFast. Do the experts think Lucid Group is a buy right now? 1 Brilliant Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock That Will Be Worth More Than Apple by 2030

Key Points AWS and advertising drive Amazon's growth. Apple hasn't released an innovative product or feature in some time. 10 stocks we like better than Amazon › Apple is the world's third-largest company by a wide margin, with a $1 trillion gap between it and fourth-place Alphabet . However, I think several companies are slated to pass Apple in market share over the next five years, including fifth-place Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), which is valued at around $2.4 trillion compared to Apple's $3.5 trillion. That's a wide gap to make up in five years, but looking at Amazon's growth tailwinds versus Apple's makes it fairly clear that Amazon is the much better stock pick. Amazon has two business units driving profit growth Apple's business is fairly straightforward; it's the leading consumer tech brand and generates significant revenue selling iPhones and other products in the Apple ecosystem. Amazon is a bit more complex, as it has the online store that most investors are familiar with, but that's not the best reason to invest in it. Although its online stores division posted the best quarter in a long time (revenue rose 11% year over year), the real stars of the show are Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its advertising services division. AWS is Amazon's cloud computing platform, and it is seeing strong demand fueled by the migration of traditional workloads to the cloud, as well as by new artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. AWS grew revenue by 17% year over year in Q2, which is strong growth considering it generated nearly $31 billion in revenue during the quarter. However, AWS's primary competitors (Microsoft's Azure and Google Cloud) posted stronger growth rates in their corresponding quarters, so investors are worried about AWS's long-term ability to perform in this sector despite its being the market-share leader. AWS will likely continue to underperform its peers due to its size, but 17% growth is nothing to sneer at. AWS is also a large part of Amazon's profit picture. In Q2, it accounted for 53% of Amazon's operating profits despite accounting for only 18% of revenue. Analysts still expect cloud computing to grow rapidly over the next few years, and if Amazon surpasses Apple in market cap, this will be a primary reason why. Advertising services is Amazon's fastest-growing segment, with revenue rising 23% year over year, an acceleration over previous quarters' growth rate. Amazon has one of the most lucrative places to advertise on the internet, as consumers are already coming to their platform to make purchases. Paying to place a product at the top of an Amazon search almost guarantees increased sales. This is worth a lot to its advertising clients and will be a key part of Amazon's investment thesis over the next few years. Amazon's margins are rising Amazon isn't a revenue growth story; it's a profit growth story. The rise of high-margin businesses like AWS and advertising services has helped Amazon boost its profit margins over the past few years. AMZN Profit Margin data by YCharts With its two high-margin business segments growing faster than other parts of its business, Amazon will naturally have elevated profit growth rates. In Q2, Amazon's operating income rose 31% year over year. Contrast that with Apple, whose Q3 FY 2025 (ending June 28) operating income increased by 11%. Amazon's profit growth rate is much faster. Over five years, a 30% growth rate will increase its operating income by 271% while an 11% growth rate increases operating income by only 69%. That would be enough to drive Amazon's profits higher than Apple's, propelling it to surpass it in size along the way. Amazon is an excellent stock pick for the next five years and a no-brainer buy at today's prices. Should you invest $1,000 in Amazon right now? Before you buy stock in Amazon, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the for investors to buy now… and Amazon wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years. Consider when Netflix made this list on December 17, 2004... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $668,155!* Or when Nvidia made this list on April 15, 2005... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $1,106,071!* Now, it's worth noting Stock Advisor's total average return is 1,070% — a market-crushing outperformance compared to 184% for the S&P 500. Dollar braces for busy week of geopolitics and Fed speak

By Rae Wee SINGAPORE (Reuters) -The dollar dithered on Monday ahead of a key meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, while investors also looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium for more policy clues. Currency moves were largely subdued in the early Asia session, though the dollar steadied after last week's fall as traders further pared back bets of a jumbo Fed cut next month. The euro was little changed at $1.1705, while sterling edged up 0.07% to $1.3557. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar advanced slightly to 97.85, after losing 0.4% last week. Markets are now pricing in an 84% chance the Fed would ease rates by a quarter point next month, down from 98% last week, after a raft of data including a jump in U.S. wholesale prices last month and a solid increase in July's retail sales figures dimmed the prospect of an oversized 50-basis-point cut. "While the data don't all point in the same direction, the U.S. economy looks to be in okay shape in the third quarter," said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank. "The Fed is likely to cut interest rates by year-end, either in September, when markets now price in a cut, or a few months later, when Comerica forecasts a cut." The main event for investors on Monday is a meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy, who will be joined by some European leaders, as Washington presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Trump is leaning on Zelenskiy to strike an agreement after he met Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. Also key for markets this week will be the Kansas City Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework. "I think (Powell) will also talk about the current economic conditions in the U.S., and that will be more policy relevant, that will be more interesting to markets," said Joseph Capurso, head of international and sustainable economics at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "Given market pricing is very high for a rate cut in September, I think the risk is that Powell is hawkish, or is perceived to be hawkish, if he gives a balanced view of the U.S. economy." In other currencies, the dollar rose 0.11% against the yen to 147.34, after falling roughly 0.4% last week. Japan's government on Friday brushed aside rare and explicit comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent who said the Bank of Japan was "behind the curve" on policy, which appeared to be aimed at pressuring the country's central bank into raising interest rates. The Australian dollar was up 0.1% at $0.65145, while the New Zealand dollar rose 0.15% to $0.5934, after falling 0.5% last week. Sign in to access your portfolio
