Sarawak proposes setting up clubhouse for media practitioners
KUCHING (Aug 15): A media clubhouse could be established in Sarawak to serve as a dedicated meeting and interaction space for media practitioners.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the facility would provide a venue for members of the media to gather and take a break from the demands of daily work.
'At this media clubhouse, it is a place for media practitioners to gather, relax, share ideas, and exchange notes, where there is a leisure area, a small café, a pool table, darts, and other facilities for socialising.
'There is also a bathroom for use after work, especially for those who need to go to another location during the day. This place also provides an opportunity to meet friends, exchange views, and strengthen relationships among media practitioners, and I think this is a good idea,' he said during the Organising Committee Appreciation Ceremony in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 and the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here last night.
He said there are also plans to develop a recreational area near the media clubhouse.
'Maybe we can find sources other than government funds, for example, receiving sponsorship from several GLCs (government-linked companies) to maintain this facility. We can also consider providing additional space such as a pickleball court or a small field for light sports activities.
'In addition, maybe a mini gym can be provided with facilities such as a treadmill for exercise. This is one of the new ideas that I strongly support,' he added. Abdullah Saidol lead media clubhouse

Kg Batu Balak upgrades completed under Madani village initiative
JERANTUT: Residents of Kampung Batu Balak in Kuala Tembeling now enjoy improved infrastructure following the completion of four projects under the Kampung Angkat MADANI initiative. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced the RM2.5 million upgrades, which include enhanced safety features for the Sungai Kenerak bridge. A tube well and water distribution system were installed to address the village's long-standing clean water shortages. The 6.9-kilometre Jalan Kampung Batu Balak was upgraded to improve accessibility for residents and neighbouring communities. A new surau was also constructed to serve the religious needs of the local population. The projects were delivered through collaboration between UKAS, the Jerantut District Office, and the Pahang State Development Office. Kampung Batu Balak JPKK chairman Mohd Johari Umar noted over 100 residents from 40 households benefited from the upgrades. He highlighted how the tube well now provides reliable clean water, replacing dependence on hill sources. The improved road network has significantly eased travel for villagers and nearby communities. Nearly 500 media practitioners aided by Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 478 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund, receiving RM1.3 million in aid so far. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching highlighted the initiative's role in assisting both active and former media professionals facing financial difficulties. She noted that 56 recipients were from the Tamil media sector. 'Applications for assistance can be submitted through the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA secretariat or directly via my office,' she said during the Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation's 2025 annual general meeting. Launched in 2023 during National Journalists' Day (HAWANA), the fund covers financial aid, medical expenses, and family support. Teo emphasised the MADANI Government's dedication to safeguarding journalists' welfare and recognising their contributions. She also revealed that the newly approved Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will hold its first meeting in November. 'The council must represent all media types once established,' she added. Teo encouraged Tamil media members to enrol in AI courses offered by the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR). IPPTAR has expanded its training to include media professionals and the public, with 80 courses planned for this year. As of July 31, 57 courses have been completed, involving 4,384 participants, including 16 AI-related sessions attended by 814 individuals. She said the initiative, led by the Communications Ministry and implemented by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), continues to support both active and former media practitioners in need of financial aid. 'Of this total, 56 recipients are Tamil media practitioners. For friends in the industry who require assistance, or know someone who does, applications can be submitted through the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA secretariat or directly via my office,' she said when officiating the 2025 annual general meeting of the Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation here today. Launched in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) in 2023, the fund provides welfare support including financial aid, medical expenses, family assistance and other necessary forms of support. Teo said the initiative reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to honouring the contributions of journalists and ensuring their welfare is safeguarded. She also announced that the newly approved Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is expected to hold its first meeting in November to deliberate on industry issues. 'I believe the council will actively engage with media stakeholders. Once established, it must represent all types of media,' she added. Teo also further encouraged members of the Tamil media organisation to participate in artificial intelligence (AI) courses offered by the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR), which now opens its training beyond civil servants to include media professionals and the wider community.
