115 Land Plots, Assets Worth Crores: What Odisha Vigilance Found In Raid On Officer
Nityananda Nayak, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Kendu Leaf Division in Keonjhar, had the highest number of properties owned by any government officer, found the anti-corruption wing of Odisha government.
The searches were carried out at seven places in Angul, Keonjhar and Nayagarh districts of the state, where Nayak owned houses. Simultaneous raids were conducted at Nayak's lavish residence in Angul's Jagannath Vihar, ancestral property in Similipada, and his in-laws' house in Jagannathpur in Angul district.
Apart from 115 land plots, the Vigilance Department also found cash worth Rs 1.55 lakh, one four-storeyed building in Angul, a small armoury containing rifles and other weapons, two four-wheelers and four two-wheelers, gold weighing 200 grams, and a collection of teak artefacts.
"Seven teams of Odisha Vigilance comprising 3 DSPs, 10 Inspectors, and other supporting staff searched for the strength of search warrants issued by the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Keonjhar," a vigilance official said.
Officials suspect that the teak and timber artefacts along with wood-cutting equipment were likely sourced illegally during Nayak's forest operations.
Nayak joined government service as a Range Officer in 1992 and rose through the ranks to become DFO of the Kendu Leaf Division.
As per the data shared by the Vigilance department, Nayak topped the list of land acquisition with 115 plots, while Pravas Kumar Pradhan, Chief Construction Engineer of Anandpur Barrage Project in Keonjhar, was placed second with 105 plots.
The Vigilance official arrested Pravas Kumar Pradhan on August 3 last for possessing assets more than his income.
The raid is part of a larger investigation into Nayak's alleged accumulation of wealth beyond known sources of income.

With coconut and coconut oil prices touching record highs in Kerala ahead of Onam, a reported coconut oil theft from a grocery shop near Kochi has drawn public attention. A shop in Aluva, about 30 km from Kochi, is the target of a theft where an unidentified accused made off with 30 bottles of coconut oil and other provisions after an initial failed attempt to break in by drilling through the shop's floor, according to a local media report on Thursday. The price of one kilogram of coconut ranges from Rs 80 to Rs 100, while coconut oil costs between Rs 500 and Rs 600 per kg across Kerala. Coconut and coconut oil are integral to daily life in Kerala, but their record prices have already strained household budgets, especially with the Onam festival approaching. The incident occurred at the vegetable and fruit shop near the Thottumugham bridge in Aluva. The shop owner, identified as Ayoob, found the break-in on Wednesday morning. When contacted, the Aluva East police, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, said they were aware of the incident but had not received a formal complaint to begin an investigation. According to the local media report, the accused first attempted to drill a hole through the shop's concrete floor to gain access, a method that proved unsuccessful. The accused then resorted to breaking the main lock to enter the premises. Once inside, his primary target appeared to be the coconut oil stock. The accused allegedly packed 30 bottles of premium coconut oil, each valued at approximately Rs 600, into a sack. The stolen goods also included a box of apples and ten packets of milk. Before leaving, the accused allegedly made efforts to destroy evidence, cutting the cables of the CCTV cameras installed inside the shop. The spiralling prices of coconuts and coconut oil have become a major political issue in the state, prompting the government to announce a subsidised rate through ration shops for the Onam festival. This incident is the latest in a series of similar thefts across the state, which is believed to be directly linked to the soaring prices of coconuts and coconut oil.

Former Lance Naik arrested for duping Army job seekers in Jabalpur
Jabalpur, Aug 8 (PTI) A 45-year-old former Army Lance Naik was arrested on Friday morning in Jabalpur for allegedly duping unemployed youths seeking jobs in defence forces of lakhs of rupees, police said. Military Intelligence (MI) handed over the accused, Rajesh Kumar Rajbhar, a resident of Ranjhi in Jabalpur, to local police, which placed him under arrest, said an official, adding so far the job fraud has been pegged at Rs 17 lakh. 'He took money from aspirants and issued them fake appointment letters (for posts in armed forces)," Ranjhi police station sub-inspector and investigation officer Mayank Yadav told PTI. Four complainants have approached the police so far. One of them, Arvind Kol, alleged that Rajbhar took Rs 4.80 lakh from him to secure compassionate appointment after the death of his father while serving in the Army, Yadav said. The other three complainants claimed they were cheated of Rs 12.30 lakh in total on the pretext of providing Army jobs, the officer said. 'We are interrogating the accused to gather more details about his modus operandi. More complainants are expected to come forward," Yadav said. Rajbhar has been booked for cheating and forgery under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), he informed. Jabalpur houses the headquarters of the Madhya Bharat area of the Army's Central Command and the oldest cantonment of Madhya Pradesh.
