Mamata unfazed after Delhi police claim video she posted was fabricated
'They (the woman and her child) were taken to various police stations, just as I had said yesterday. They were threatened. We want them to come back, and whoever is speaking the truth and who is lying will be proved eventually,' Ms. Banerjee said at an event in Birbhum district.
The Trinamool Congress chairperson had on July 27 shared a 46 second video on social media where a child is seen. 'Atrocious!! Terrible!! A senior Delhi police official said on July 28 that after an investigation it was found that the video is baseless and fabricated. 'This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police,' the official said. According to the police, the woman who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal made this baseless video and shared it with a relative who is a political worker.
Harassment and torture
The development comes at a time when hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal have alleged harassment and torture by police in different states, including Delhi, who suspect that they are Bangladeshi nationals.
Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, targeted the Chief Minister and said she should receive 'international awards for spreading misinformation.' Mr. Adhikari warned that more such videos were likely to surface.
Seven migrant workers hailing from Harishchandrapur in Malda who were detained in Gurugram, Haryana, on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals have been released and are on their way to their home towns. Hundreds of migrant workers have already returned to the State after being detained in different states.
The Trinamool Congress leadership, led by the Chief Minister, has launched a 'language movement' to protest against harassment of Bengali speaking migrants.

They estimated that real GDP growth is 1.5 percentage points higher around simultaneous elections compared to staggered ones, translating into an economic gain of nearly Rs 4.5 lakh crore in today's terms, equivalent to half of India's health budget or a third of the education budget. They also noted that gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), a proxy for investment activity, is 0.5 percentage points higher after simultaneous elections, reflecting increased confidence among private and foreign investors. However, frequent, staggered elections are said to cause wide-ranging disruptions to economic and social life. Industries such as manufacturing, construction, tourism, and healthcare suffer from repeated cycles of uncertainty, and migrant workers—who constitute nearly a third of India's population—are especially affected. Repeated elections force them to travel home frequently, leading to lost wages and missed voting rights. The impact also extends to education and law enforcement. Primary school enrolment dips by 0.5 percentage points around non-simultaneous elections due to teachers being deployed on election duty and schools doubling as polling stations. Crime rates tend to spike more during staggered polls as police forces remain diverted for longer periods. One of the starkest observations is that India has witnessed elections every single year since 1986, placing the nation in a state of perpetual election mode. This results in the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being enforced up to four times in five years, restricting policymaking and delaying developmental projects. Moreover, the political consequences of frequent elections include a spillover of populist promises across states and a sharp rise in fiscally unsustainable freebies. Singh warns this trend represents a 'race to the bottom" in fiscal populism. In agriculture, frequent polls create speculative uncertainty over policies like minimum support prices (MSPs), subsidies, and loan waivers, distorting farmer decision-making and hampering long-term planning. The findings are likely to fuel the ongoing debate around the feasibility and desirability of One Nation One Election, with proponents arguing that it could improve governance stability, reduce fiscal populism, and enhance policy continuity. The panel includes members like Supriya Sule (NCP), Mukul Wasnik, Randeep Surjewala, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (all from Congress), Anil Desai (Shiv Sena UBT), and Kalyan Banerjee (TMC). Representing the ruling alliance are Anurag Thakur, Sambit Patra, Bhartruhari Mahtab, Baijayant Panda, Anil Baluni (all from BJP), Shrikant Shinde (Shiv Sena), and Harish Balayogi (TDP), among others. The JPC was constituted during the last winter session of Parliament after the Centre agreed to subject the ONOE Bill to detailed legislative scrutiny. AAP, BJP spar over waterlogging and desilting audit
New Delhi: AAP and BJP sparred again on Wednesday over the issue of waterlogging on key roads after a heavy spell of rain the day before. AAP's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned the fate of crores of rupees spent by various agencies on the desilting of drains and asked if Delhi govt conducted a third-party audit, as mandated by Delhi High Court. BJP said the responsibility of the audit lay with the previous AAP govt, as it was ordered by the HC in April 2024, and the report was to be submitted by June 30 last year. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Bharadwaj claimed that Tuesday's rainfall was "ordinary", yet several arterial roads, including ITO, Zakhira, Sadar Bazar and various stretches in Lutyens' Delhi, were inundated. AAP councillors also gheraoed the office of mayor Raja Iqbal Singh at Civic Centre, charging that MCD failed to control waterlogging in the city. The AAP's leader of opposition in the MCD house, Ankush Narang, wrote to Singh demanding immediate action. Narang alleged that waterlogging was a reflection of "gross negligence and administrative failure" of BJP-led MCD. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that Kejriwal govt was supposed to conduct a third-party audit of the desilting of drains to make the report public by June 30, 2024, which it "failed" to do. "Delhi witnessed the loss of nearly 40 innocent lives in 2024 due to waterlogging, and even after the high court's directive, Kejriwal govt did not conduct the third-party desilting audit. This clearly shows that for the past 10 years, Kejriwal govt was involved in a scam under the guise of desilting," Sachdeva said. "Being a minister in that very govt, Bharadwaj must answer why the audit report was not made public by June 30, 2024," he added. Sachdeva said Bharadwaj must explain why no action was taken against the "guilty leaders and officials" responsible for the deaths caused by waterlogging in 2024. BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused Bharadwaj of posting "false and misleading" statements on social media by claiming that Minto Bridge was closed due to waterlogging, but the traffic was running smoothly on the stretch.

Malda migrant worker's family backs Mamata claim of harassment by Delhi police
Family members of the migrant worker who had alleged harassment and torture by the Delhi police on Wednesday returned to West Bengal and held a press conference in Kolkata claiming that they were referred as 'Bangladeshis' and asked to pay ₹25,000 by the men posing as police personnel. Sanjur Parveen and other members of the family who hails from Chanchal in Malda district of West Bengal held a press conference at the Trinamool Congress party office in Kolkata and said that the personnel of Delhi police asked her to chant 'Jai Shri Ram. Several leaders of Trinamool Congress including chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh and, State's Minister Firhad Hakim, Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor were among the leaders who were present at the press conference. 'Four people came to our house and they introduced themselves as police. They wanted to see our Aadhaar cards. They referred to us as Bangladeshis and said that we should not leave the area. We told them that we are not Bangladeshi but Indians,' Ms. Parveen said. She added that the next day four others came with two women and tried to take my child away. 'There I was asked to say 'Jai Shri Ram'. I said, I am a Muslim. I cannot say that. After that, they demanded ₹25,000 from me,' Ms. Parveen said. Reacting to the press conference of the migrant workers family, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that the Trinamool Congress should lodge a complaint against the Delhi police. The contending claims come at a time when hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal have alleged harassment and torture at the hands of police on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals in different States including Delhi. In a related development, the Trinamool Congress claimed that 300 migrant workers have returned to the State from Haryana. '300 migrant workers, men and women, were forced to flee Haryana and return to Bengal to escape @BJP4India's xenophobic witch-hunt. @NayabSainiBJP's police raided their homes, called them 'Bangladeshi', threw them in detent ion, and brutalised them despite valid documents proving their Indian citizenship,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted. The West Bengal's ruling party described the BJP government as a 'fascist regime weaponizing state power to humiliate Bengalis'. '@BJP4India will pay for every baton blow, every racial slur, every illegal detention. The countdown to their downfall has begun, and Bengal will lead the charge,' the party added.
