
Is this the most political fashion item ever?
Overlooked, familiar, homely… These are the words traditionally associated with the apron, a detachable, workaday garment that has historically functioned 'almost like an invisibility cloak.' So said Carol Tulloch, a professor of dress, diaspora and transnationalism at Chelsea College of Arts, in a telephone interview with CNN.
Just don't tell that to Jeremy Allen White's character Carmy Berzatto in hit TV drama 'The Bear' whose tightly-tied blue Bragard apron (a replica of those worn in chic Napa Valley eatery The French Laundry) only enhances his main character energy as the show's fourth season premieres this week.
Tulloch, alongside fellow London-based academic Judith Clark, a professor of fashion and museology at London College of Fashion, have recently come together for a three-month-long residency at the Chelsea Space gallery to reflect upon the apron's cultural and social values — its design and use, as well as role regarding issues of race, class, and gender identity.
It's timely as the apron is enjoying something of a renaissance in popular culture — featuring, for example, in recent collections from Hermès, The Row, Dior, Phoebe Philo and Ganni and on Kaia Gerber who wore a chic pinafore-style dress while out in New York in April — and it's ability to encompass unheard stories and experiences is starting to be critically appraised.
'They've been an unconscious part of many of our lives and childhoods,' said Tulloch. 'While they only really have one function — to protect clothes — they come in many forms.'
When Tulloch started critically examining aprons, they proved to be a fascinating insight into people across all strata of society, she said. 'Those I wouldn't expect to have a close relationship with aprons — academics, for example — become quite pensive when they start thinking about them.' Tulloch recalled a small show from some years ago, called 'Pinnies from Heaven' at the Makers Guild museum in Wales, exhibiting works created by artists based on their recollections of the apron. One artist talked about how, for them, the apron absorbed the detritus of all the things that happened in the home, not just the mess from cooking or cleaning, but emotional fallout too. 'That really stuck with me,' Tulloch said.
For Clark, the apron is 'talismanic.' Speaking to CNN via a phone call, she observed that the residency created an immediate sense of nostalgia for some people. 'Within two minutes of coming in, people recount something of their family history,' she said.
Tulloch has also looked at aprons as a tool of protection and activism for women through the lens of African Jamaican market women called 'Higglers'. 'The Higgler is still very much a part of Jamaican identity,' says Tulloch. 'She was visually defined by the apron, whether tied around the waist or as a full bib. Likewise they were worn by women who were pineapple or banana pickers, or domestic workers.'
Tulloch references contemporary South African artist Mary Sibande who explores the intersection of race, gender and labor in the country with her sculptural depictions of the apron-wearing 'Sophie,' the artist's self-proclaimed 'alter ego who plays out the fantasies of the maternal women in her family.'
'Sibande's great grandmother all the way up to her mother were all maids,' said Tulloch.
'The apron has served as a visual code in movies too: African American women were often defined as maids by the wearing of aprons in films and cartoons. Separately, the suffragettes reclaimed aprons, using pinafores emblazoned with slogans as activist tools, often when they had come out of prison for their campaigning work…'
But aprons weren't always a sign of domesticity, servitude or homeliness, or of being working class. Nor were they always worn predominantly by women. Research suggests that triangular apron-like garments were first worn by noblemen in Ancient Egypt, as evidenced in paintings from the time. In the Middle Ages, aprons made from leather and heavy canvas were worn by farriers, cobblers, butchers, blacksmiths and other tradesmen desiring heavy duty protection from the perils of their work. Then, during the Renaissance, European 'women of means' wore elaborate yet washable aprons adorned with lace and embroidery to keep their luxurious gowns clean. Aprons were a fixture of many employments during the industrial revolution, with strict codes delineating the styles to be worn by staff (plain, workaday) and the styles worn by the women holding the purse strings (elaborate, embroidered and made from more costly cloths).
In the 1950s, the apron came to be a symbol of homemaking particularly in the United States — think Lucille Ball's Lucy Ricardo character in the 1950s sitcom 'I Love Lucy' or more recently January Jones' portrayal of Betty Draper in 'Mad Men.'
Despite the garment being such a part of our collective consciousness, aprons have rarely been studied, said Clark.' Collections, such as the one held by the Fashion Museum (in Bath, England), are huge and of great cultural value and significance, but there hasn't really been sustained research done on them,' she explained.
While displaying aprons comes with its own set of challenges — the style is tricky to mount due to its flat construction — Clark also suspects aprons have 'not been considered of cultural importance because of their relationship to traditionally women's domestic work.'
But perhaps that's changing as the apron continues to be modernized, further cementing itself into popular culture. Thanks to Gen-Z's increasing interest in food and cooking, apron-wearing is finding a new genderless and more diverse audience. While alpha male chefs of old wouldn't often be seen in a pinafore (Gordon Ramsay aside, aprons were the preserve of a 'cook') Carmy's proud pinny-wearing is a case in point. Even Vogue magazine decreed the return of the garment (alongside the rise of what they termed 'gardening-core') in their June 2025 issue.
'There's some beautiful imagery of the late (fashion journalist and muse) Anna Piaggi with Karl Lagerfeld, using a Chanel cape as an apron,' said Clark. 'I love their shape, their mobility, that they're not fitted and so therefore are a truly inclusive garment… I love how easily the item can be subverted. It just refuses to be defined.'

What it's like to go to an 'anti-dating apps social'
It's a Tuesday night in Soho, London, and I'm standing in a room with 200 single people who are looking to meet new people. I'm at a Bored Of Dating Apps (BODA) singles social, an event aimed at those who feel disillusioned with dating apps (who isn't?) and are in search of IRL connection. Singles' nights are having a moment. With "swipe fatigue" on the rise, it's not difficult to see why offline events are taking off. 79 percent of Gen Z daters and 80 percent of millennial daters feel burnt out by dating apps, according to a 2024 Forbes study. In my 2025 non-fiction book The Love Fix, I explore the myriad reasons why dating feels so hard right now and why so many of us are feeling drained, rather than sustained, in our quest to find connection. "Hell-scape," "Hell. On Earth.," "Harrowing," "Soul-destroying," are just a few of the choice words people used to describe the current dating scene when I researched my book. SEE ALSO: We asked daters what dating in 2025 is like so far Singles nights across the U.S. and UK, are selling out and racking up waitlists. One popular event in London, "Dinner for 100," had over 3,000 applications for one of its events (which can only accommodate 100 people). So, what's all the fuss about? When BODA asked me to come along and host one of their singles socials, I thought I'd give it a whirl. I'd already dipped my toe in the offline dating pond, with a life drawing class for single people, and had found it a refreshing and restorative experience. BODA was founded by freelance journalist Jess Evans in January 2022 who had just come out of a break-up which had left her heartbroken. Evans thought she'd set up an in-person dating social in her home city of Liverpool, UK. At the time, she envisaged it being a one-off event. "I was very much like, this is just going to be a bit of fun, it'll be a good laugh, and let's just see who turns up. I had no intention of making it into a business," Evans tells me. "All I wanted to do was meet someone. I just wanted to be off the apps." After the breakup, Evans had launched straight back into swiping on the apps, and found the experience completely draining. "This is just, for me personally, was totally destroying my mental health, which just was not working for me." That first social attracted nearly 300 people, which Evans did not expect. "Honestly, I was terrified. I was a journalist by trade so I'd never put on an event in my life." From there, Evans continued hosting Liverpool-based events before branching out to other UK cities and eventually launching different types of socials, such as yoga rooftop sunset events. Evans' original goal to meet someone in real life also had a happy ending. "This wasn't long after lockdown and COVID-19, so people were desperate for community, people were lonely (and still are), but particularly at that time, I felt really lonely, especially at weekends, and I had no single friends." This absence of single pals is a major strand of the BODA philosophy — the events aren't just about romance, they're about finding new single friends and a community of people who are in the same boat. "I had no intention of making it into a business. All I wanted to do was meet someone. I just wanted to be off the apps." - BODA founder Jess Evans Today, BODA runs socials in London, New York, Amsterdam, in addition to a number of UK cities: Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow, and Guildford. There are supper clubs, bookshop meet-cute sessions, sober socials, coffee shop meet-cutes, drinks socials, sauna socials, paddle boarding, yoga, dances, and hikes. As I made my way to my first ever BODA social, I must admit I felt a bit nervous. I'd picked out a cute outfit to wear — a black velvet dress (cue the inimitable Alannah Myles song), paired with a bold red lipstick. My role as host was to welcome every attendee as they arrived at The Little Scarlet Door, a bar in the heart of Soho, London. I handed each guest two cards, the size of business cards. The first card entitles the attendee to a "Dutch courage shot" which can be redeemed at the bar for either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic shot. The catch is: you have to do the shot with a new connection — be it, romantic or platonic. The second card is the "congrats you're fit" card. For the non-Brits, "fit" means "hot" in British slang. There's a space on the card for you to add your number — useful if you get chatting to someone who you'd like to keep in touch with. But, if handing over a card doesn't feel natural to you, it's perfectly fine to ask them for their number. SEE ALSO: I got stood up. I refuse to let dating app culture break my spirit. I see a vast array of faces — some people attending with friends, and many more coming solo. 97 percent of attendees attend alone, which might feel a little bit nerve-wracking, but ultimately it gives you a greater chance of stepping outside your comfort zone and talking to fellow singles at the event (which is kind of the whole point). Many admit that they're feeling nervous or a little unsure of what to expect. At this particular event, it's a bar social, so people are chatting by the counters, and sitting outside. It's heartening to see people making connections, hitting it off with people, swapping numbers and making plans to meet up again. During my hosting experience, I met countless people who also felt nervous, or even vaguely terrified. I found it reassuring to know I wasn't alone in feeling a bit anxious about it all. Putting yourself out there takes vulnerability and confidence — you should feel proud of yourself for overcoming those fears and showing up. So, the burning question: did I meet anyone? Yes I did. I've attended a total of three BODA socials — once as a guest, twice as a host. Attending as a guest forced me to step outside my comfort zone — I was no longer hosting, I wasn't needed on the front door, so I had to get out there and mingle. I'll be honest: the introvert in me wanted to go hide in the bathroom and wait for the evening to be over. I had to give myself a mental pep talk: "Rachel, you are a 36-year-old woman in control of your life, you can talk to a few strangers in a bar." At my first BODA social I ended up exchanging numbers with someone, who I went on a few dates with. And at my second social (where I was attending as a guest), a guy asked me for my number. While none of those connections have led to anything long-term, it feels good to get out there and talk to people in real life, to feel proactive about dating, to get a break from the interminable sofa-swiping. Plus, it's always a nice boost to get approached by interesting people who want to get to know you. Past BODA attendees often send Evans updates on relationships which started at BODA — there have been engagements, weddings, and many more happy endings. Evans ended up having her own meet cute at one of her socials. She met her partner Liam at one of her socials and the two of them will be getting married this week. This is a question that's come up a lot when I talk about BODA and it's a very valid one. There's been much discussion about straight men's reluctance to show their faces at IRL dating events. As Moya Crockett writes in a piece for The Londoner aptly named "Where are all the men?", there's a number of reasons why hetero guys aren't as forthcoming as straight women: "Some men might be too embarrassed to ask their mates to go to a singles night together, and too intimidated to go alone." In the same piece, Crockett adds that many men have expressed their feeling that speed dating sounds a bit "cringey," that many guys "just want to go for a pint," while others "are sceptical about what they perceive as attempts to profit from their singledom." Dating apps aren't exactly not-for-profit organisations, right? As I write in The Love Fix, "The big-bucks business of love existed long before the internet. In 1897, W. T. Stead – a newspaper owner and editor who later died on the Titanic – launched The Wedding Ring Circle, which published catalogues of single people in the area, listing their interests and hobbies." At a recent BODA event, I had a particularly illuminating conversation with a straight man in his 30s who'd come along with a male friend. He told me that he wasn't nervous about being rejected at these events, but what did fill him with fear was the idea of being explicitly rejected in front of his friend. "Do you think that has something to do with masculinity?" I asked him. He didn't hesitate in confirming that it had everything to do with masculinity. The tickets for each BODA event are split by gender — early bird female tickets, early bird male tickets, then general male and female tickets. Early bird tickets are £20, and general tickets are £25. The organisers aim to get a good gender split for each event — women's tickets tend to sell out sooner than the men's tickets, which organisers put down to men being last-minute ticket buyers. So, who exactly are the socials aimed at? Evans says, "BODA socials are inclusive to anyone of any sexuality." "BODA is obv about romance, but friendship and community too, so that involves absolutely everyone coming together," she adds. If you aren't necessarily looking to make new single friends, and are looking for a dedicated queer dating space, there are lots of LGBTQ singles nights popping up, such as Sappho Events, Hunbun's Love Lab, not to mention gay and lesbian speed dating events. And if bar socials aren't quite your scene and you're looking for sober dating, there are plenty of non-drinking socials to choose from: bookshop meet-cutes, coffee socials, to name a few. Adidas makes return to Manchester with huge nod to Oasis
Huge boards have gone up on Market Street ahead of the reopening of the adidas store. The site in the city centre is due to open on Thursday, July 3. Teasing something special, the boards outside the shop are emblazoned with the opening date as well as a series of Oasis logos and nods to the imminent reunion tour, which kicks off next week in Cardiff before a run of dates in Manchester. It comes off the back of the brand's recently announced partnership with the Manchester band, the announcement of their new 'Original Forever' campaign, and exclusive Oasis collection. SYDNEY — Meet the 'Nat Gala': a brand-new New York benefit slated for September that hopes to garner the buzz and fundraising power of May's Met Gala — this time with an environmental focus. To be unveiled in London on Wednesday during London Climate Action Week, the event is the offshoot of a new environmental coalition of cross-industry partners called The Nat which is led by London-based Gail Gallie, a former marketing executive who cofounded Project Everyone with British screenwriter and film producer Richard Curtis in 2015, the campaign unit that launched the Global Goals on behalf of the United Nations. The inaugural Nat Gala, its flagship fundraiser, will take place in New York on Sept. 21 on the eve of the 80th Session of the U.N. General Assembly. Gallie hopes the event, which is due to be staged at the Classic Car Club on Pier 76, will raise $20 million to go toward critical nature restoration projects that will be facilitated by partners including Conservation International. Three hundred guests are anticipated. 'The SDGs [U.N. Sustainable Development Goals] have got 15 years to run,' said Gallie. 'It was thinking, me personally, 'What can I add to the trajectory that we are on?' My personal passion has so much drawn me into nature and I feel like that's the new news that the world wants as well, because we've been hearing climate change, climate change, climate change for so long… I could see how I could drive more change by really diving deep into nature. And that's where The Nat has come from.' The work of David Attenborough and, in the fashion space, Stella McCartney, will be honored at the gala, which is also assembling a cadre of ambassadors — or 'NATure Stewards' — who include environmental activists Harrison Ford, Wanjira Mathai, Xiye Bastida, Titouan Bernicot, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim and Sabrina Elba, a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). As for the red carpet, 'We're calling it a 'natural' carpet' said Gallie. 'The directive is, 'Seriously, think about your choice. Is it borrowed? Is it vintage? Is it from a designer who is working at the cutting edge of sustainable practices?'' Gallie harnessed the collective clout of a well-connected creative team for the project. The Nat and Nat Gala's co-creative directors are Rachel Muscat — the Los Angeles-based Australian cofounder and former chief executive officer of Pharrell Williams' Humanrace brand — and Al MacCuish, the London-based cofounder and chief creative officer of Sunshine, a creative entertainment production company. Joerg Koch, the founder and editor in chief of Berlin-based magazine 032c, has been tapped as Nat Gala artistic director; Art + Commerce cofounder and managing director Jimmy Moffat as art and culture adviser, and veteran music executive Gary Gersh as music adviser. Other creative collaborators include American musician Madame Gandhi and Open Planet, the global environmental footage specialist. 'I think what's been so inspiring for us working with Gail is that it is this untapped connection between culture and nature that we really see bringing the two worlds together,' said Muscat, who launched the Rachel Muscat Studios consultancy after leaving Humanrace in late 2024 and is now working with brands and celebrities in several markets. '[Take] Joerg Koch from 032c, like it's quite unexpected that he would be somebody who would come in. And that's our ambition: how do we continue to bring unexpected voices to nature? Because everyone actually is connected to nature in a certain way, but maybe they just don't know how to become closer or be a part of it.' The Nat Gala isn't Gallie's first fashion hookup. In 2021 she launched a Project Everyone social media campaign called Fashion Avengers, teaming up with brands including Burberry and Pangaia to advocate for, and drive action toward, the U.N.'s Global Goals. 'I knew the industry a little bit and I knew that it had big problems in terms of the natural world and sustainability, but I also knew that it was trying, and there was a real appetite there to change. But then the pandemic happened,' said Gallie. 'The Nat Gala is not a fashion event per se, it's a nature event,' she added. 'But the creativity and the ability to drive change that fashion has is undeniable. I think that's what I was scratching at with the Fashion Avengers. And now it just feels like maybe this is the right time.'
