Veteran sports handicappers insist the only way to consistently beat the market is to focus on the specific situation, or 'spot,' for a team.
Many feel that it has proven to be a successful method of forecasting an edge that will outperform mathematical projections. However, some view narratives as much more noise than substance.
I believe we have such a scenario in the WNBA on Tuesday, with the Washington Mystics visiting the Chicago Sky as a three-point road favorite with a total of 156.5.
Chicago is coming off an emotional win over the Connecticut Sun, snapping a three-game skid, all blowouts.
Plus, Angel Reese recorded her first career triple-double.
Meanwhile, Washington's most recent game was an embarrassing 89-56 home loss to the Atlanta Dream. The Mystics mustered only 22 points in the second half and shot just 29.5 percent from the field in the game.
Given these scenarios, I believe the right approach is to back Washington to rebound and play with more focus and energy.

The Mystics are not an elite team, but they have demonstrated they are solid and could compete for a playoff spot. That's enough to view them as reliable in this spot.
I also think this edge in talent, effort and determination is most pronounced in the first half.
I expect the Sky to start flat off the big win.
Betting on the NBA?
Plus, Washington has a much better bench, and that could shine in the second quarter, which is when reserves usually play.
I have a 51-41-1 ATS record in this Post sports section. My next wager is Washington laying one point on the first-half spread.
THE PLAY: Mystics 1H Spread -1 (DraftKings)

Yankees shut out again by Angels as scoreless streak hits 29 innings in fifth straight loss

The murmurs transitioned to grumbles before blooming into part exasperation, part boos. The fan frustration showering the Yankees on Tuesday was far louder than their bats. The Yankees' offense has gone AWOL, an out-of-nowhere stretch of silence in three consecutive shutouts. The team-wide funk deepened Tuesday, when they pushed their scoreless streak to 29 consecutive innings during a 4-0 loss to the Angels in front of 35,278 fans — who tried their best to voice their displeasure over the blaring speakers in The Bronx. 4 Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (99) reacts after he strikes out looking during the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium. Bill Kostroun/New York Post An offense that had scored the most runs in the American League (370) after Saturday's defeat in Boston has not added to that total since. The Yankees (42-30) have lost a season-high five straight games because a group that has more effective hitters than lineup spots has simultaneously gone frigid. Aaron Judge has found his first slump of the season, 3-for-24 in his past seven games after going hitless with three strikeouts Tuesday. 4 DJ LeMahieu (26) reacts after he strikes out looking during the third inning of the Yankees and Los Angeles Angels game. Bill Kostroun/New York Post The bats around him have followed their leader. The Yankees finished with four hits and crucially zero that amounted to anything: After a night they left five more on base, the Yankees have gone 1-for-25 with runners in scoring position over the three shutouts. They had a chance in the first inning, when Cody Bellinger reached second base on a hustle double. That chance was wasted when Giancarlo Stanton grounded out. 4 Jazz Chisholm Jr. (13) reacts after he lines out during the fourth inning of the Yankees and Los Angeles Angels game at Yankee Stadium. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 4 Pitcher Will Warren (98) reacts after Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward (3) hits a two-run RBI single during the third inning of the Yankees and Los Angeles Angels game Bill Kostroun/New York Post They had a chance in the third inning, when new-look leadoff hitter Jasson Domínguez looped a single into center field and stole second. But with two outs, Bellinger flew out, and the groans from the crowd intensified. They did not have a third chance. This time it was 35-year-old Kyle Hendricks who shut down the Yankees over six innings in which he struck out nine — his most since all the way back on Sept. 18, 2020. The righty entered play with a 5.20 ERA in his first 13 starts, in which he punched out just 5.58 per nine innings.

Rockies hit a franchise record-tying 7 homers, 2 by Michael Toglia, in 10-6 win over Nationals

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Rockies hit a franchise record-tying seven home runs, including two from Michael Toglia, and Antonio Senzatela won his second game of the season, as Colorado held off the Washington Nationals 10-6 on Tuesday night. Colorado hit seven homers in a game for the third time in franchise history, matching April 1997 at Montreal and against Cincinnati in May 2016. The Rockies have won three in a row for the second time this season. It was the second multihomer game of Toglia's career. He hit three homers on July 14 last season against the Mets. Four of the homers came in the six-run seventh, highlighted by a three-run shot from Hunter Goodman and a solo shot by Ryan McMahon off Nationals reliever Cole Henry. The Rockies last hit four or more homers in one inning on June 20, 2021 against Milwaukee. Thairo Estrada, Sam Hilliard and Mickey Moniak also homered for the Rockies. Senzatela (2-10) allowed one unearned run on three hits and three walks in five innings. The right-hander also defeated the Nationals on April 20. Washington's Michael Soroka (3-5) pitched six innings, striking out a season-high nine batters, but allowed five hits and three runs. Takeaways Nathaniel Lowe and Luis García Jr. hit homers for the Nationals, who have lost 10 in a row for the third time since the franchise moved to the nation's capital in 2005. Key Moment Washington third baseman Brady House connected on the first two hits of his major league career, including an RBI single in a four-run ninth. Key Stat The Rockies' 10 homers in their last two games are the most in any two-game span in franchise history and the most in any two-game span on the road. Up Next Rockies send RHP Germán Marquez (2-8, 6.62 ERA) to the mound seeking their second road series win of the season, facing Nationals LHP Mitchell Parker (4-7, 4.84) on Wednesday night. ___ AP MLB:
