Campaign to prevent diarrhoea among children under 5 years of age
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, led the launch of 'Stop Diarrhoea Campaign' formulated on the instructions of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, at a recent function organised at the Government Girls' Middle School, Thilaspet, a government press release stated.
The Chief Minister also distributed ORS packets and zinc tablets to the children in the target age group.
The programme, scheduled to go on till July 31, aims to achieve zero child deaths due to childhood diarrhoea as part of a nation-wide intensive campaign.
Over a two-month-long drive with pre-positioning of two ORS packets and zinc as a co-packaging to children under 5 years of age to broad base access to treatment, the effort would also promote individual and community-level hygienic practices, such as washing hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, consumption of safe and purified drinking water and maintaining proper sanitation facilities.
The Health Department will also ensure that children receive Rotavirus and Pentavalent vaccinations and Vitamin A syrup as per schedule and encourage exclusive breastfeeding for infants for the first six months before introducing complementary feeding from the seventh month.
MLAs V. Aroumougame and S. Ramesh, V. Ravichandran, Health Director, S. Govindarajan, Director, National Health Mission in Puducherry, and Health Deputy Directors V. Anandalakshmi (Family Health and Child Health), Shamimunisa Begum (Public Health) and G. Ragunathan (IEC), Kavitha, school headmistress and health officers participated.
The 2025 campaign seeks to improve outreach with respect to the 77,884 children in the under-5 age group who benefited from the programme last year, the press note said.

State to produce antivenom locally, says Saseendran
Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran has announced that the State will soon launch a project in collaboration with the Health Department to produce snake antivenom locally. Inaugurating the World Snake Day observance here on Wednesday, he said the antivenom at present used in Kerala was sourced from Tamil Nadu. 'Studies have shown that the potency of snake venom can vary from region to region due to atmospheric differences. As a result, antivenoms may not neutralise the venom of the same species found in different regions. Hence, locally produced antivenom is essential for effective treatment,' he said, emphasising the importance of region-specific antivenom. Pointing out that between 82,000 and 1.35 lakh people die from snakebites globally every year, the Minister said nearly half of those deaths occurred in India. 'Kerala has historically reported high snakebite fatality rates.' 'However, efforts by the Forest department and the introduction of the SARPA (Snake Awareness, Rescue and Protection App) mobile application have significantly brought down the number of deaths. From 119 reported deaths in 2019, the figure dropped to 30 in 2024. The State aims to achieve zero deaths due to snakebites by 2030 as part of the Snake Envenomation Zero Mortality Kerala project,' Mr. Saseendran stated. Head of Forest Force Rajesh Ravindran presided over the programme. Chief Wildlife Warden Pramod G. Krishnan also spoke on the occasion.

675 on Nipah contact list across Kerala; health department steps up vigilance
PALAKKAD: A total of 675 individuals have been identified on the Nipah virus contact list across various districts in Kerala, says Health Minister Veena George. Of these, 178 people are contacts of the second Nipah-positive patient from Palakkad, who died on Saturday night. District-wise, Malappuram has 210 contacts, Palakkad 347, Kozhikode 115, Ernakulam two and Thrissur one. Currently, one person in Malappuram is undergoing treatment in the ICU, while 82 samples from the district have tested negative so far. In Palakkad, 12 people remain in isolation, while five have been discharged after observation. Across the state, 38 individuals have been categorised under the 'highest risk' group and 139 under 'high risk', all under close surveillance. On Tuesday, a high-level review meeting chaired by Minister Veena George was held to assess the situation. Senior officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, State Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Directors of Health and Medical Education, district collectors, district medical officers, police officials and representatives from various departments attended the meeting. The health department has intensified monitoring and response mechanisms across affected districts to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

Push against diarrhoea deaths in kids
Chandigarh: To safeguard the health of young children in the state, Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh on Tuesday launched the 'STOP Diarrhoea Campaign 2025'. The two-month-long initiative aims to prevent mortality among children under five. The minister also unveiled awareness posters. Dr Balbir Singh emphasised: "Diarrhoea is a major cause of child deaths — each one a tragic and avoidable loss. This campaign is our pledge to protect every child with awareness, prevention, and timely treatment." He said the health department would adopt a prevent-protect-treat (PPT) strategy, targeting high-risk monsoon months. The state will deploy door-to-door ORS-Zinc kit distribution through ASHA workers. Besides, ORS-Zinc corners will be established at all health institutions and Anganwadis, and health workers' skills will be enhanced to manage cases effectively. "No child should die from a treatable condition. We are ensuring ORS, Zinc, IV fluids, and antibiotics are available at every health facility," said the minister. He called for the participation of panchayati raj leaders, self-help groups, teachers, and parents to champion the cause. Dr Balbir Singh said Punjab had been fostering inter-departmental collaboration with education, women child department, water and sanitation, and rural development department to address diarrhoea's root causes. "This is not just a health issue, it's a battle for Punjab's future. Together, we will break the chain of infection," he asserted. The minister made an appeal to keep the surroundings clean, use safe water, and act fast if diarrhoea strikes — start ORS-Zinc immediately and seek medical help. He also advocated drinking local drinks such as lemonade (shikanji) as the intake of liquids is essential for hydration. Fight against rabies A memorandum of understanding (MoU), under the National Rabies Control Programme, was signed between the health department and Peedu – an animal welfare NGO located in Mohali – to facilitate coordinated efforts towards the preparation of the State Action Plan for Rabies Elimination by 2030. The initiative involves the engagement of various stakeholders, along with the training of health staff and counselling sessions at anti-rabies clinics in district Mohali, with the scope for future expansion across the state.
