Tourism and hospitality industry and economists believe that the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday will provide an economic boost to the KZN and South African economies.
Brett Tungay, East coast chairperson for the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa), said that the Comrades marathon has a huge impact on the KZN hospitality and tourism and the KZN economy.
'In Pietermaritzburg, most of the occupancies have been reported as fully booked, which is great news. We all expect a great turnout for Durban with both local and international arrivals. Comrades is not just a KZN event; it really impacts people from across South Africa.'
Tungay added this is great news for sports and events tourism.
'This is something that we have been pushing for as events and sports tourism gives a huge boost for the tourism and hospitality sector. We recently had a major event with the Nedbank Cup final in May between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. It was a huge event for KZN; restaurants, retailers, and accommodation were fully booked. So the Comrades Marathon is also going to be huge, and we are expecting to be very busy. We do need international arrivals as numbers have been down since the Covid 19 pandemic and events like this boost international arrivals.'
Rosemary Anderson, National Chairperson Fedhasa, said that the Comrades Marathon is one of South Africa's most iconic sporting events and plays a vital role in driving tourism.

'Each year, it attracts thousands of runners, supporters, and families from around the country and the world. This influx of visitors boosts demand for hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, tour services, and transport – creating a ripple effect across the local and regional economy. It's not just about race day – it's about the extended stays, pre- and post-race travel, post-race dining and celebrations, and the vibrant atmosphere that energises the entire hospitality sector.
Anderson added that the Comrades Marathon is a brilliant catalyst for the tourism and hospitality industry.
'It fills accommodations, packs out restaurants, and showcases South Africa's warm hospitality to both locals and international guests. Beyond the economic boost, it gives destinations like Durban and Pietermaritzburg a valuable platform to market themselves globally. Visitors often extend their stay to explore other attractions in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond, amplifying the tourism spend. Importantly, it also creates temporary and permanent job opportunities across tourism-related services – from event logistics to food vendors, tour guides, and more.'
Anderson said that large-scale events like the Comrades Marathon, the Cape Epic, or international rugby and cricket sporting events are powerful tourism drivers.
'They not only bring in international visitors but also elevate South Africa's global profile as a dynamic, welcoming, and world-class destination. The more successful events we host, the more we can stimulate local economies, create jobs, and diversify our tourism offerings. They give people a reason to travel here – and often, once they experience the country, they return for leisure holidays, business, or further sporting events. Major events are a smart, sustainable way to grow tourism and showcase South Africa's unique spirit.'
Umhlanga Tourism chairperson Jeannie Sarno said that the office is looking forward to welcoming the annual Comrades Marathon and the influx of visitors it brings to the area.
"It's not just runners that attend the Comrades; they travel with friends, supporters, coaches, and even family. The majority of our establishments are fully booked, and this is a great relief to the tourism-related businesses who have had low bookings for March and April this year."
Sarno added she encourages the community to continue to be welcoming to our visitors and helpful to assist when it comes to recommendations of restaurants and tourism attractions for the days leading to the run and the days after.
'Many families allow the runners to 'do their thing' on the pre- and post-race, and the families enjoy the sites and attractions in and around Umhlanga.'
Waldo Krugell, an economics professor at the North-West University (NWU) and a previous Comrades Marathon runner, said that he always gets excited during Comrades weekend.
'There is a clear positive economic impact. Previous research indicates that it contributes significantly to the provincial economy. It is not only the athletes, but the supporters that travel along and frequently stay longer as well. Comrades has a larger impact on the local economy than many similar sport events, and this is attributed to the specialised nature of the event.'

Springboks' Test record against Australia at Ellis Park

The Springboks will begin the defence of their Rugby Championship title against Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 16 August. Kick-off is at 17:10. Ellis Park will surpass Newlands as the South African stadium to have hosted the most Springbok matches when the two sides do battle. The two famed grounds are currently tied on 54 Tests apiece. Ellis Park tied Newlands when hosting its most recent Test on 31 August 2024 when the Springboks beat the All Blacks 31-27. Of course, Newlands is no longer in operation having hosted its last ever Test on 23 June 2018 when the Springboks lost 25-10 to England in front of 33 827 spectators. For the record, Loftus Versfeld has hosted the third-most Springbok Tests with 42. A good quiz question: Twickenham in London is the international venue to have hosted the most Springbok Tests with 29. Sars audits surge as collectable tax debts rise to R500 billion

Discover how Sars is leveraging technology to increase tax audits, leading to a staggering R500 billion in collectable tax debts. Understand the implications for taxpayers and how to navigate this new landscape. Image: File photo. With a debt book of R535,9 billion, Sars is looking for any means to expedite seamless collections! Sars can leverage Artificial Intelligence and data-driven insights from 3rd party information, including processing of taxpayer bank statements without any prior warning or consent. This empowers the revenue collector to now fully capitalise on their legislative power to audit taxpayers based on 'risk(s) detected', typically going back 5 years: Imagine having historically filed all your tax returns on time, making good on your dues to Sars, only to wake up to a Notification of Audit and Request for Relevant Material – this has become the new normal for many South African taxpayers, be it individuals or companies. Sars' fully loaded audit arsenal Since the start of 2025, we have practically seen a significant spike in Sars Audits, which in most cases result in the Audit being Finalised with Adjustments, due to taxpayers missing the Request for Relevant Material. What this means for you is an adverse finding being made by Sars, and manifested in upward adjustments on amounts included in 'Gross Income'. The adjustments often stem from an analysis of taxpayer bank accounts, and where a credit transaction is unexplained, it is deemed to form part of income. Additional taxes are then levied on this upward adjustment amount, which the taxpayer is wholly liable for. Current technological advancements and machine learning, now also grant Sars access to taxpayer information from crypto trading/investing platforms, allowing the revenue authority to make a determination on crypto-taxes due. Next Stay Close ✕ It is noteworthy that to give effect to these adjustments, Sars must issue Additional Assessments, which in extreme cases of non-compliance, may impose 'Understatement Penalties' of up to 200% of the tax due! AI insights spell the end for tax non-compliance Sars has made significant progress in modernising its systems to detect fraud and enhance compliance, whilst also building its tax collection capacity, and a track record of in-depth Audits when any inkling of non-compliance is detected. These data-driven insights inform Sars of all transactional records pertaining to specific taxpayers, and using AI, the human resourcing element is significantly reduced in 'risk detection' and subsequent compliance-centric actions. This collaborative approach enables Sars to gain access to a comprehensive dataset, facilitating more robust evaluations of taxpayers' financial activities, resulting in risk detection, and a subsequent 'Notification of Audit and Request for Relevant Material' being issued. Taxpayers then have a finite time to respond, before Audit Findings, and subsequent Finalisation, are issued. Non-response could very well spell the end of days for the offending taxpayer! Do not let a Sars audit be your apocalypse Where you find yourself facing a historic audit from Sars, it is imperative to ensure a timely response, with all correct supporting documentation. We have seen in the market a number of ill-advised taxpayers seeking the correct counsel only after the fact and paying the price for it, such as when those Additional Assessments are issued post-Audit Finalisation. The nail in the coffin is always the Understatement Penalties, capping at a bank-breaking 200% of the capital taxes due! As a rule of thumb, all correspondence received from Sars should be holistically addressed by a strong multi-faceted tax, legal, and financial team – the 'A-Team'. In instances of non-compliance with tax laws, legal professional privilege is a must, especially where Sars has suspicion of, or has already detected, 'risk(s)'. This will not only serve in safeguarding you against potential jail-time but also allow for the correct legal stopper to be put in place, preventing Sars from implementing aggressive collection measures. As compliance specialists, enlisting the correct A-Team ensures taxpayers and their astute practitioners will be correctly advised on the most appropriate solution to ensure the burden of proof is fully discharged in any Audit. * Baijoo is the associate director and head of strategic engagement and compliance at Tax Consulting SA. KZN's R134. 3 million funding aims to eradicate foot-and-mouth disease in livestock

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa announces significant funding for livestock improvement during the 2025/26 budget vote. Image: KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development/ Facebook The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has allocated R134.3 million to support livestock improvement, particularly mitigating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa made the announcement during her 2025/26 budget vote in the KZN legislature on Tuesday. KaMadlopha-Mthethwa stated that mandatory veterinary services for clients will be enhanced in the current financial year to ensure healthy animals, sustainable and profitable animal production enterprises, safe trade in animals and products of animal origin, and the well-being of animals and the public. She said seven new outbreaks were reported in KZN in February and March this year, bringing the total number of outbreaks in the province to 164. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ As a result, the national Cabinet supported extending KZN's Disease Management Area (DMA) boundaries to curb further FMD outbreaks. This includes Big Five Hlabisa, Mtubatuba, Nongoma, Ulundi, uMhlabuyalingana, Jozini, Pongola, Abaqulusi, Mfolozi, uMhlathuze, Mthonjaneni, Nqutu, Nkandla, uMlalazi, and Mandeni municipalities. 'As it stands, no cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, and goats), their products, or genetic material may be moved from or within the DMA unless authorised by a state veterinary permit. Movement control is applied to affected locations. Infected locations outside the DMA are similarly quarantined until the disease is eradicated,' kaMadlopha-Mthethwa said. She further said the department, working with industry, continues to conduct clinical surveillance to ensure early detection of disease and to determine the absence of disease in previously affected dip tanks. These are supported by an intensive vaccination drive in areas diagnosed to be infected. KaMadlopha-Mthethwa commended department officials, industry, and the security cluster, particularly the South African Police Service, for continuously hosting interventions to mitigate any further spread. Significant strides have been made in containing the spread and restoring economic normalcy. 'Over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, an amount of R134.3 million has been allocated to support livestock improvement, particularly mitigating against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD),' kaMadlopha-Mthethwa said. 'These funds will be used for dipping chemicals, other veterinary remedies, and the employment of 77 dip tank assistants through the EPWP programme in the FMD disease management area to assist the livestock associations to keep proper records and follow up on vaccinations, dipping sessions, etc.' KaMadlopha-Mthethwa added that the department will also provide maintenance items such as treated poles and steel pipes to livestock associations to maintain the dip tank infrastructure. The department also plans to expand its public awareness campaigns regarding the disease throughout the province, making extensive use of various media platforms. 'The movement control of animals will remain in place together with disease surveillance across the province to detect any infections timely.' KaMadlopha-Mthethwa's budget came days after the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) briefed the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Agriculture. The ARC identified securing funding for the new FMD Vaccine Facility as an ongoing challenge, and efforts to obtain the necessary funds remain a top priority.
