Sydney roofer miraculously survives after ute wrecked in horrific Northern Beaches crash

7NEWS15-05-2025

Anyone who saw the unrecognisable wreck of the ute would never believe someone could survive such a horrible crash.
But miraculously, this Sydney tradesman did.
Mark Peebles, a 32-year-old roofer, was on his way to work on May 9 when his white Toyota Hilux slammed into a power pole on Mona Vale Rd, Terrey Hills on Sydney's Northern Beaches at 6.30am.

The force of the crash was so extreme it snapped a power pole at its base.
The ute's front end was crushed beyond recognition, the cabin folded in on itself like crumpled tin and high-voltage power lines hung dangerously above the wreck.
Peebles was trapped inside as his tools and roofing materials were stewn across the road.
After he was cut free, Peebles was airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
But against all odds, he survived and it marked the the start of a long recovery journey for Peebles and his young family.
Memory like goldfish
Peebles suffered multiple fractures in both legs, a collapsed lung and spinal damage and has undergone five surgeries since the crash.
While he's been moved out of intensive care and has started speaking again, family friend Kim Isik told 7NEWS.com.au that conversations are fleeting.
'The conversation that you have with him is like a goldfish,' Isik said.
'It's just gone within 15 minutes to half an hour, and he doesn't remember anything all over again.'
Isik said Peebles had been feeling dizzy in the days leading up to the crash and may have blacked out behind the wheel.
Doctors expect the recovery might take six months to one year, before he can walk again.
Young family's struggle
The crash has turned life upside down for Peebles' wife Monika and their two young children — a one-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.
Monika described the drive to the hospital that morning as 'the longest five minutes' of her life, not knowing if her husband was okay.
Now, she's juggling work, caring for their children, managing the emotional toll, all while supporting her critically injured husband in hospital.
Isik said Peebles' daughter has been struggling to understand why her dad is not coming home.
'He's a very hands-on, loving father … a dedicated family man,' Isik said.
'He's an extremely hard worker, originally from Queensland, he's a typical Queenslander — relaxed, easy-going, a happy-go-lucky kind of guy.'
To help ease the pressure, Isik has launched a GoFundMe to support the family.
She said the community has been generous, offering food and constantly asking how they can help.
Knowing the family has lost half their income, Isik wanted to ease some of the burden on Monika's shoulders, and she has been touched by the outpouring of support.
'Everyone has really come together — you see the best in people during such a traumatic time,' she said.

Mother's plea after daughter survives head-on crash in the Pilbara

Michelle Leslie was on the other side of Australia in Ipswich, Queensland, watching her nephew's AFL match when she received the news her daughter was involved in a head-on collision near Roebourne. Jasmine Whitfield, 24, was in the car with friends when the Toyota Prado collided with a Toyota HiLux on North West Coastal Highway on May 23, claiming the lives of both drivers, 29-year-old Dakota Tahi Tahi and a 21-year-old man. 'I was just in shock when I heard the news,' Ms Leslie said. 'I was panicking, just in disbelief, all the emotions — my family were with me when I received the call. Not knowing if she was all right was what made it harder. 'The crash happened that afternoon. We didn't find out until night time. 'Our deepest love and condolences for Dakota's family.' Ms Leslie is calling for financial support through GoFundMe , so she can be at her daughter's side during her recovery in the trauma unit at Royal Perth Hospital. 'It's hard because I don't have leave from work, so this is why we've put the GoFundMe out, to raise funds just to help with Jasmine; if she needs things and getting me to and from the hospital. Accommodation is a big factor too, it's expensive,' she said. 'Any help I can get, we both really appreciate this, because I'm going to extend my stay from four weeks to 10-12 weeks to be with Jasmine through all of her appointments. 'I've got no income coming in, as of next week.' Three other female passengers in the Prado were injured, including 19-year-old Manawa Hinaki, who was also flown to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries. The collision brings the number of road deaths between Karratha and Roebourne to four in 2025 so far, compared with two in 2024. Teenagers Dennis Hicks, 16, and Ethan Howard, 17, died in a motorbike crash near Cleaverville Road in March this year. The Pilbara community is now calling for better safety measures on the highway. In a statement, a Main Roads spokesperson said in recent years, they had delivered a range of upgrades to improve safety on North West Coastal Highway, including two overtaking lanes, widening, and installing an audible edge and centre lines on the 38km section between Roebourne and Karratha. 'When travelling on regional roads, it's critical all road users plan ahead, manage fatigue and distractions, and be aware of the road conditions when travelling long distances,' the spokesperson said. 'As with all fatal crashes, a police investigation will be undertaken. 'In accordance with Main Roads' crash investigation policy, the agency will also undertake its own fatal crash investigation to determine if any road environment factors contributed to the severity of this crash.' Pilbara District Acting Supt Matt Froude urged all motorists to drive safely at all times. 'We continue to remind motorists to always drive safely on our roads right across the State, and keep in mind the wellbeing of others,' he said. 'WA Police continue to see crashes from drivers that fall victim to the 'fatal five' across the State, which continue to be overrepresented in fatal and serious crashes. 'These are speeding, impaired driving (alcohol/drugs), non-use of restraints/helmets, distracted driving (use of mobile phones), and fatigue. 'Our officers do not want to knock on your door to deliver devastating and life-changing news about the loss of a loved one on our roads. Please take care on our roads so everyone can arrive at their destination safely.'

Daughter's tribute to dad found in bin

The daughter of a man whose body was found in an industrial-sized bin has taken to social media to remember her 'best friend' as police continue to piece together the fateful night. Luke Jon Telega, 45, was found by a garbage contractor behind a Salvation Army store on Percy Street, Hobart about 9am on Monday. He was last seen by his children on Saturday night. 'Rest easy dad,' Harmony Telega shared in her heartbreaking tribute in the early hours of Wednesday morning. 'I know we weren't on speaking terms when you left this world. It was hard seeing you the way you were. Days after Mr Telega's body was found on Percy Street in Bellerive his daughter has shared a heartbreaking tribute. Linda Higginson Credit: News Corp Australia 'You were the best father I could've ever asked for, my best friend. 'You helped me when I needed it with no questions asked you were always happy to spend time with me for no reason. 'I will for ever (sic) be grateful for you I love you so so much. 'I will forever pick you to be my father in every life time (sic). Until we meet again dad.' It comes as Tasmanian police continue to investigate whether Mr Telega was met with foul play or misadventure in the hours between his last sighting and his body being found. New CCTV footage has been released in hopes of identifying two people police believe may have information. Mr Telega's daughter described him as her 'best friend'. Daughter's tribute to Luke Jon Telega after body found in bin, as police seek potential witnesses

The daughter of a man whose body was discovered inside an industrial-sized bin has paid tribute to her father, as police make a fresh appeal to the public. Luke Jon Telega, 45, was found by a garbage contractor behind shops on Percy St at Bellerive, in greater Hobart, about 9am on Monday. Telega was last seen by family at 10pm on Saturday. The ongoing investigation is exploring whether he met with foul play or misadventure during the significant gap between then and his discovery. An autopsy showed no visible signs of injury. Police have now appealed for two potential who they think might have information to come forward, in a fresh appeal to the public. The women were spotted on CCTV in the area on Sunday night. One of the women was seen standing outside a shopfront on Percy St at 7.50pm. She may have spoken with someone on the street and was seen driving what is believed to be a light-coloured Toyota Prado. The second woman was also seen on Percy St a short time later at 8.05pm. She was driving a red SUV. The bin where Telega was found sits behind a Salvation Army outlet and is known to be frequented by people sleeping rough, Tasmania Police Detective Inspector David Gill said on Tuesday. It is unclear if Telega had been sleeping in the bin. When his body was discovered, the garbage contractor told police he initially believed it was a mannequin. 'Until we meet again, Dad' Police are still urging anyone who was in the area, especially on Sunday, to contact Crime Stoppers. Telega's daughter Harmony Telega said she and her father were not in contact recently but shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. 'Rest easy Dad. I know we weren't on speaking terms when you left this world. It was hard seeing you the way you were. You were the best father I could've ever asked for, my best friend,' Harmony said. 'You helped me when I needed it with no questions asked, you were always happy to spend time with me for no reason. 'I will always be forever grateful for you, I love you so, so much. I will forever pick you to be my father in every lifetime. Until we meet again, Dad.' Now she and her family grapple to gather funds to lay Telega to rest. 'Harmony and her family would like to give Luke the send-off he deserves but as funds are tight this isn't an option,' family friend Lily Hurst wrote in a GoFundMe. Hurst called it a 'tragic, stressful time' for the family.
