DSP felicitated for translating vachanas to English
Addressing the felicitation ceremony for deputy superintendent of police Basavaraj Yaligar, who translated Basavanna's vachanas into English, held here on Sunday, Patil said Basava and his followers envisioned a society where all working classes were represented equally. "Lingayat is not a caste but a caste-free religion. If the Kalyana revolution did not occur, the entire country would have embraced Basava's religion today," he added.
He praised Yaligar for translating vachanas into English amid his tight work schedules, making them accessible worldwide. "Vachanas have become our culture and wealth. Due to the research by the Halakatti family, we are now familiar with 200 Basava followers. There has been a systematic effort to erase the 12th-century social revolution from history by comparing Basavanna to oxen. Even now, some are adding false vachanas.
We are not against anyone, but we will protect our culture and heritage," he asserted.
Dr Siddharama Beldala Sharanaru of Basava Kalyana Basava Mahamane Institute in Bidar said Basavanna does not belong to any one community or region. "The true Basava philosophy has not yet reached the world or many monasteries. In Basava philosophy, kings and emperors are not given divine status. According to Basava philosophy, one should achieve autonomy and Lingayat independently.
Yaligara has vividly captured all aspects of Basava philosophy in his book," he opined.
Vijayapura Tablighi Jamaat head Maulana Abubakar said Basavanna dedicated his life to justice by abolishing the caste system. "We will translate Basavanna's vachanas into Hindi and Urdu languages. We will publish a book studying the common elements in Buddhism, Basava, Ambedkar, and Islam," he stated.
Professor Gil Ben Herut from Florida, USA, said he is inspired by Basavanna's vachana literature. "I teach this literature to my students. The book by Yaligar is a significant contribution not only to Karnataka and India, but to the world," he added.
Former MLC Arun Shahapur, senior writers Devanur Shankar, CC Hemalata, and BR Banasode spoke on the occasion. Vijayapura SP Lakshman Nimbargi, additional DC Somalinga Gennur, former MLA Raju Alagur, among others, were present.

'Want To Make India Game Development Capital': Centre On Online Gaming Bill
New Delhi: The government wants to make India the 'game development capital of the world' and hopes the proposed Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 - tabled in the Lok Sabha Wednesday afternoon - will set the country's game development industry on that path. The intent is clear, S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, told NDTV. The bill creates a category for 'safe' online games, i.e., e-sports and online social games, and the development of these will be backed by the government. It also cracks down on money-based games and gaming platforms offering gambling opportunities, including poker, rummy, and other card games, arguing these lure people with false promise of large and quick payouts and lead to financial and emotional distress. The point of difference between these two categories - i.e., 'skill' vs 'chance' - has been a grey area for quite some time, allowing some operators to cloak gambling games as 'skill-based'. "One of the issues that came up repeatedly in meetings with the gaming sector is clarity on classification. Parts of the sector believe some people and platforms are causing financial and social distress, related to addiction, and that are tarred by association," Mr Krishnan told NDTV. "One part of the gaming industry is doing that whereas another is more positively oriented... in terms of gamification creative content development. That portion needs to be encouraged. For that, a clear delineation needs to be made and has been offered in this bill..." he said. Mr Krishnan also said concerns over online money games, or online gambling platforms, had been flagged by political leaders from different parties, including those from the opposition. "The point here is between 'skill' and 'luck'... this grey area was used to argue what suited operators in different jurisdictions. But there are no game of pure chance... that is like a coin toss, and the outcome should be 50-50. That doesn't happen in these games," he explained. It also proposes stricter oversight of platforms, particularly those offering real-money games, such as poker. Sources said people who play these games are victims (and) will not be punished... but there will be action against those who run real money gaming platforms, facilitate transactions, etc. Last week, in connection with a federal investigation into illegal betting apps - which masquerade as 'a game of skill' to appear different from gambling games, which are outlawed by Indian laws - sources told NDTV this 'market' is worth Rs 8.3 lakh crore and is growing at 30 per cent annually.

Advisory Board for Banking and Financial Frauds reconstituted for two year
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Advisory Board for Banking and Financial Frauds, a panel to examine role of top bank officials or financial institutions in fraud cases, has been reconstituted for two years, with ex-CVC Suresh N Patel designated as its chairman. ABBFF, which functions as a 'Safety Valve' for bankers, has been reconstituted for two years with effect from August 21, 2025. The members of the board are Ravikant, a former secretary of the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare; Rajni Kant Mishra, a former director general of the Border Security Force; Alok Kumar Choudhary ex-MD of State Bank of India and Sarada Kumar Hota, former MD of National Housing Bank, a notification said. As per the terms of appointment, the chairman and members of ABBFF are eligible for re-appointment, subject to the condition that the total period of appointment as chairman and/or member should not exceed 4 years or 70 years of age, whichever is earlier, said the notification dated August 19. The board has been mandated to examine the role of all levels of officials and whole-time directors (including ex-officials and ex-whole-time directors) in public sector banks, public sector insurance companies and public sector financial institutions in case of frauds amounting to Rs 3 crore and above. 'All public sector banks, public sector insurance companies and public sector financial institutions shall refer all matters of frauds, involving sums of money of Rs 3 crore and above to the board… for advice before initiation of criminal investigation and the competent authority shall consider the advice tendered by ABBFF regarding involvement of criminality/malafide of the officials, in all such cases," the notification noted. It said that 'all public sector banks, and public-sector financial institutions shall ensure that the advice of the board has been sought, received and made available in case of frauds amounting to Rs 3 crore and above to the investigating agencies, who may take the advice of the board into account while taking consequential actions in such cases". The Central Vigilance Commission or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can also refer any case or technical matter to the board for its advice, the order stated. ABBFF may also periodically carry out fraud analysis in the financial system and give inputs, if any, for policy formulation related to the frauds, to the RBI and CVC, it said. The advisory board may ordinarily, within a month of receipt of the initial reference, tender its advice as may be requisitioned by the ministry/department/CVC or the investigating agency (including the Delhi Special Police Establishment), it added. ABBFF should keep the Central Vigilance Commission and RBI informed about its performance and activities on a quarterly basis, it said. In case a member of ABBFF is associated as a non-executive independent on the Boards of other entities, then he/she should not be involved with any proposal where these entities are part of proposals placed before ABBFF.
