Concert held in Cairo to mark 1st UN int'l day for dialogue among civilizations
CAIRO, June 11 (Xinhua) -- A concert was held on Tuesday evening in the Egyptian capital of Cairo to mark the first UN International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, which is observed on June 10 annually.
Titled "Conversation and Connection: Music Connects the World," the event brought together more than 200 guests from Egypt and China and featured traditional folk music and other performances from both countries.
In a speech delivered at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang said that China and Egypt, both ancient civilizations with rich histories, jointly advocate respecting the diversity of civilizations and promoting the common values of humanity.
He added that the event will help the two civilizations continue to thrive by fostering cultural exchange and integration.
Al-Tayeb Abbas, CEO of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where the event was held, said the concert symbolized the coming together of two ancient civilizations.
Nashwa Abdel Hamid, undersecretary of Egypt's State Information Service, praised the historic legacies of both countries and the strong relationship and partnership between Egypt and China.
Wang Niejing, a musician from Pu'er City in southwest China's Yunnan Province, used handmade Lahu bamboo flutes to tell the legend of the forest and the land.
He said the performance served as a cultural bridge between China and Egypt, two ancient civilizations, through in-depth exchange.
"Music has no borders, and we can feel each other's friendship through its sound," he added.
The event was sponsored by the China International Culture Association, the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and co-hosted by the China Cultural Center in Cairo and China Music House, a Chinese musical group.

Feature: Prestigious piano contest winner from China cherishes heritage, pressure in artistic journey
by Qin Mingwei NEW YORK, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Aristo Sham, the newly crowned winner of the 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, attaches high importance to the heritage he represents as well as the extreme pressure in the marathon piano contest. The 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition concluded on June 7 in Texas, the United States, featuring outstanding performances by 340 pianists from 45 countries and regions. Sham, 29, became the first pianist from Hong Kong, China, to win this 63-year-old competition. Sham was educated in Hong Kong, and then in Britain and the United States. He recently obtained an artist diploma from The Juilliard School in New York, and lives in the city currently. Sham began learning piano at the age of three and has won numerous international awards. Looking back on his artistic journey, Sham said that his childhood and his early piano training in Hong Kong nurtured his music expertise, allowing him to better understand the music he plays from different perspectives. "I'm very happy to be representing a part of the world which is part of my heritage. And I think it's great that music is such a universal language that we have artists and competitors from all over the world who are on the largest stages of the world," Sham said at a themed press briefing in Manhattan on Wednesday. Sham said that the biggest challenge in preparing for the competition was that the Cliburn was "a real marathon," requiring him to play six different repertoires in two and a half weeks. "The fact of having to prepare this program to such a high quality that we have to present both to the audience and jury there and also to audiences worldwide who are watching, is definitely something that pushes us to the extreme," said Sham. But Sham also appreciates the pressure, "because without this kind of pressure, we would not be able to sort of achieve the level that we have. And I like to see this in a positive way, and it's what really pushes the boundaries of what we can do and what we can do with art," Sham said. As the first Hong Kong pianist to win the Cliburn, Sham admitted that his artistic journey has faced prejudice against his Asian identity. "Even though it's much less than 20 or 30 years ago, there are still viewpoints out there that are loaded with prejudice and racism," Sham said. Sham considers his award as an opportunity to help consolidate and truly affirm the status of Asian artists on the world stage. "I think it's also up to us to try to break down these barriers and really just make everyone understand that we're all the same and we're all equally worthy of presenting art and being great artists," Sham said. Maisie Ho, director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (New York ETO), attended the press briefing to congratulate on Sham's achievement. "It is really such great news for a lot of Hong Kong people... and we can't wait to see how he would bring his own heritage and also his talent into the world stage, and we are prepared to support him along his journey," Ho told Xinhua on the sidelines of the event on Wednesday. The New York ETO, as the official representative of the Hong Kong government, will continue to support and promote more Asian artists to the world stage, such as hosting various cultural activities, according to Ho. "We could all learn and we could all exchange, and through people exchange, that's how our really treasurable friendship and artistic relationship could flourish," Ho added. While Chinese artists have gained greater global influence, an increasing number of Chinese pianists have made their mark on the international stage. Seven of the 30 finalists in this year's Cliburn hailed from China, setting a new record. Held every four years, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious contests in classical music. The gold medalist will receive a comprehensive and personalized career development plan lasting three years, including concert bookings, artistic support and publicity.

Khaby Lame detained in Las Vegas immigration incident, leaves US
He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. 12 Jun 2025 04:09pm The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated "life hacks." - Photo source: Khaby Lame/FB NEW YORK - Khaby Lame, the widely popular TikTok personality with millions of followers, has left the United States after being detained by immigration agents in Las Vegas for allegedly overstaying his visa, Xinhua reported. The Senegalese-Italian influencer, whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was detained on Friday at Harry Reid International Airport but was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order, a spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed in a statement. Demonstrators wave American flags and a Mexican flag above the 101 freeway as protests against ICE immigration raids continue in the city on June 11, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by MARIO TAMA / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) Lame arrived in the United States on April 30 and "overstayed the terms of his visa," The Associated Press on Wednesday quoted the ICE spokesperson as saying. The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated "life hacks." He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. "His detainment and voluntary departure from the United States comes amid President Donald Trump's escalating crackdown on immigration, including raids in Los Angeles that sparked days of protests against ICE, as the president tests the bounds of his executive authority," noted the report. A voluntary departure, which was granted to Lame, allows those facing removal from the United States to avoid a deportation order on their immigration record, which could prevent them from being allowed back into the country for up to a decade. - BERNAMA-XINHUA More Like This

Chinese Woman Arrested After Attempting To Break Into BTS' Jungkook's Home
It's only been a day since BTS (방탄소년단) member Jungkook (정국) returned from his military service. However, there has already been a serious invasion of his privacy. Earlier today, news outlets reported that a woman had allegedly attempted to break into the idol's home. According to news reports, Yongsan Police officers have arrested a Chinese woman in her 30s for attempting to trespass on Jungkook's residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The incident occurred on the night of 11th June 2025 (Wednesday), at around 11:20pm. Police were called to the scene after neighbours caught the woman pressing the electronic keylock on the door, likely attempting to enter the premises. It's unknown whether Jungkook was at the residence during the incident. However, after her arrest, the woman revealed she came to Korea to see Jungkook following his army discharge. The police are investigating the specific circumstances of the incident. Jungkook's label, HYBE, has commented on the situation but said, 'It's difficult to provide detailed information on the situation as the police are currently investigating the situation.' Meanwhile, ARMYs online have shared their reaction to the news, mostly expressing shock over the situation. Many criticised the woman's action, hoping she'd receive appropriate punishment for attempted trespassing. Others lamented the extreme situation with BTS' stalkers, or sasaengs, urging HYBE to protect their artists. Some also said that the singer has only returned from the military for a day, but already has to deal with stalkers. This case isn't the only issue surrounding BTS' recent military discharge. After RM (알앰), V (뷔), Jimin (지민) and Jungkook completed their military service, roughly 1,500 ARMYs flocked to the HYBE building in Seoul to celebrate the occasion. However, the move sparked a backlash as the large crowd could cause traffic disruptions and possible accidents. In response, Jimin shared a post on the Weverse platform, asking the fans not to gather near the building. While we understand the fans' wishes to meet the BTS members, we hope they can respect the idols' wishes not to gather in front of the HYBE building. As for the break-in case, we hope the perpetrator will receive the appropriate punishment. What are your thoughts on this?
