Dan Skelton's hopes of maiden title extinguished by imperious Willie Mullins

Telegraph26-04-2025

Willie Mullins's first salvo of runners on the last day of the season extinguished Dan Skelton's hopes of a first title, as the imperious Irishman retained his status as No 1.
One day Skelton might reflect that taking the trainers' championship down to the wire was the Herculean effort of his career.
In most normal years against normal opposition he had done more than enough, with over £3 million in prize-money. But his horses finally started running like they might be leaden legged while Mullins's just kept doing what Mullins's do; namely winning.
No other trainer in jump racing history could muster 21 for the last push - particularly with his home festival of Punchestown three days away - and though Mullins brought quite a few members of his second XI, an on-song Gaelic Warrior is very much top order first XI as is Il Etais Temps.
When Gaelic Warrior duly led home a 1-2 4-6 for Mullins in the Oaksey Chase, the third race on the card, it was effectively game over and Skelton's wish to be beaten by five figures rather than pounds and pence, to ease the pain, was granted. By the end of the day it was not even close; he was down to the tune of £200,000.

'It's relief and it's been tough work the last few weeks,' said Mullins. 'I feel sorry for Dan who has been leading the whole way and then we've had a fantastic last few months which made this a possibility. It's tough when you are beaten in almost a photo finish but we're very happy to win.
'It's out of this world to be thinking that I have done similar to Vincent O'Brien (who retained his title in 1953-54), but then he went and did it again on the Flat which I can assure you I won't – I'm very happy doing what I am doing and lucky to have the team that I have, starting with Jackie my wife and then the whole way down. I'm thrilled.'
A prime example of the Mullins genius came when Il Etais Temps, a very smart novice last season but having his first start for a year, and nephew Danny Mullins inflicted a first defeat on Jonbon outside of Cheltenham, beating him five and a half lengths in the bet365 Celebration Chase. In terms of the title it was the coup de grace.

'He is a smart horse but my nephew is in for it again – he never follows my instructions!' joked Mullins. 'I said go easy and get some place money and he goes and wins it. I did not expect that performance. To do what he did was one of the moments of the whole year.'
Though Mullins filled out three of the first four places in the bet365 Gold Cup, he did not have the winner which was the Olly Murphy trained Resplendent Grey.
If Skelton has been looking over his shoulder at Mullins for a couple of seasons, one day it might be his near-neighbour Murphy who has, in effect, been kingmaker for Sean Bowen this season, providing him with over 100 winners.
Murphy started his career very brightly but it plateaued a bit until he got Bowen in as first jockey. Obviously the trainer-jockey relationship is symbiotic and together they have grown into a potent force. 'I texted Sean this morning and said I was sorry I hadn't provided him with a Grade One winner,' said Murphy. 'But this makes up for it.'
In every generation of jockeys there is one who you do not want to see coming after you going to the last, no matter who is on the leader; the sort of person who could pick up a horse and carry it if necessary. Stan Mellor, Peter Scudamore, AP McCoy, Richard Johnson all fitted that category.
Now that jockey is Bowen, crowned champion for the first time, and going to the last there was - as there had been at Perth all this week - a certainty that even Rachael Blackmore on the Mullins-trained Lombron would succumb to him in his current form. And so it proved.

Roy Keane admits surprise at being punched by person he 'loved' – 'He blamed me'

Roy Keane has opened up on the time he was punched by a former manager in the dressing room, after making a huge mistake in his early years as a player The late Brian Clough once punched Roy Keane in the dressing room, but that did not stop the fiery Manchester United legend from loving him. Before he became the explosive Red Devils captain that won everything there was to win, Keane played under Clough at Nottingham Forest, where he received the iconic manager's own brand of tough love. The two-time European Cup winner was the man who brought Keane to England, signing the Irishman from Cobh Ramblers in 1990. Keane quickly rose to prominence as one of the most promising young talents in European football. ‌ His journey under Clough was marked by many hard and, at times, physical lessons. One of those was brutally inflicted after an FA Cup third-round replay against Crystal Palace in 1991, where Keane made an error that led to them drawing at the City Ground. ‌ Reflecting on Clough's unique approach to management during a recent appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said: "He (Clough) played mind games sometimes. If you got beaten, you'd think he's going to go after you and then he'd go the other way and go, 'Have a few days off.' "If you'd won a few, you'd be going, 'Listen, (I think we'll be getting) a couple of days off' and he'd be like, 'No, you're all in tomorrow.' He'd definitely be playing mind games." Keane reminisced about a stunning incident involving him and former team-mate Mark Crossley, who is widely known as 'Big Norm' around football. Keane turned to Crossley and added: "We (had) the incident with me, you and the Crystal Palace goal where he punched me after the game. He'd give me days off and he'd be brilliant." One of Keane's worst moments as a player came in the final minutes of that FA Cup clash, when his short back-pass resulted in Crossley fluffing a clearance to Palace star John Salako, who proceeded to lob in an equaliser to force another FA Cup replay. At the time, penalty shootouts were not part of the FA Cup, so Keane's error meant Forest had to face Palace in the competition for the third time that season. Re-living that painful moment, Keane added: "I'm looking and it was honestly like slow motion. You know about not upsetting the manager because we all loved Brian Clough. He gave us a chance like Norm did for me. ‌ "I remember John Salako got it and I'm looking at Norm running back. John Salako, what would he have been? Forty-five yards out? (I thought) 'Norm get back. He's f***ing not getting there'. I swear, as soon as I heard it hit the net... "He (Clough) blamed me for the back pass and it was the cup game. So then we went to a replay and he wanted the game done and dusted there. I think it ended up going to, three replays or something. ‌ "So he (Clough) had the thought of having a free weekend and was going, 'Now I've got to go to London, all the way to London to play Palace in the cup game that we hadn't won.' So he blamed me after the match." Turning to Crossley, Keane said: "I don't think you said much after the game. You just let me take the wrap for it. He (Clough) just punched me in the chest." Keane made 148 appearances at Forest between 1990 and 1993. He eventually left for United in a then British record £3.75million deal.

Lazy Griff connections keep options open after Derby exploits

Middleham Park's director of operations, Mike Prince, said: 'It was a brilliant day and it was surreal watching him as he was coming round the bend and into the straight travelling so sweetly. 'There was just a split second where you thought 'he might just do it'! I think Christophe (Soumillon) thought that he would get past him (Lambourn), but the winner is obviously a good horse and he was super tough in that final furlong.' A huge thank you to @itvracing for capturing the incredible scenes after Lazy Griff's brilliant 2nd place finish in The Derby. This is syndication at its finest, sharing unforgettable moments together!💙🧡 📽️ITV Racing#TeamMPR #Derby2025 — Middleham Park Racing (@MprUpdates) June 7, 2025 Prince insists Lazy Griff's performance was not a huge surprise to his connections, particularly after the rain that fell on the Surrey Downs in the lead-up to the race. 'He'd worked well in the spring and he just missed a week before Chester, so we knew we were going into Chester undercooked and we knew he'd come on for it. So having seen him run such a big race there, that kind of cemented us going for the Derby,' Prince continued. 'The only issue was Charlie didn't want to run him on super fast ground, that was the only reason he wouldn't have gone to Epsom, but obviously the rain came which was helpful. 'We were thinking we could finish in the top six going in there – we weren't going there just for a day out that's for sure and Christophe obviously won a Group Three in France on him last year and I know he couldn't understand why he was such a big price either.' A trio of Group One assignments are on the table for the Protectionist colt's next start, while another tilt at Classic glory in the St Leger at Doncaster appears an obvious target. Prince said: 'There's the German Derby, the Irish Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. No decision has been made as yet and obviously the ground will play a part – if it's fast anywhere we won't go. 'I think it will be one of those three and I'd say the percentage call at this point would be the Grand Prix de Paris, but it's certainly not set in stone and if it came up heavy in Ireland with proper soft ground that might change things. 'The St Leger would make sense later in the year as although he was quite fleet of foot there coming down the hill at Epsom, there is plenty of stamina in his pedigree, being by a Melbourne Cup winner, and I know after Chester Charlie said 'this is a Leger horse'.' Christophe Soumillon returns aboard Lazy Griff (PA) Wherever Lazy Griff turns up next it should be an exciting second half of the season for his 24 individual owners, which include George Griffiths, after whom the horse is named. Prince said: 'We have a policy where the first person to buy a 15 per cent share gets to name the horse and George also got his name on the racecard. He and his wife Amy were obviously on cloud nine on Saturday.'
