Police run security simulation as 46th Asean Summit begins May 23
KUALA LUMPUR: The police are conducting a security simulation exercise in preparation for the 46th Asean Summit, to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), beginning May 23 with a senior officials' meeting.
The simulation, involving convoys ferrying heads of government and their delegation, was conducted based on actual movement schedules, with personnel on duty around the clock from the beginning of this week until next Friday (May 30).
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order (operations) deputy director DCP M.V. Sri Kumar said that more than 6,200 officers and personnel have been assigned for duty throughout the summit, with the number expected to increase as needed.
"In addition to route control, personnel are also tasked with monitoring movement and overseeing security preparations, including the use of metal detectors and facial recognition technology," he said when met during the exercise at KLCC.
In addition, Sri Kumar urged the public to understand the significance of this national event and to cooperate fully with the authorities.
"We are only implementing phased road closures for a week, to ensure the smooth running and safety of the event," he said.
He also advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in and around the capital, during this period.
The 46th Asean Summit will begin with senior officials' meetings on Friday (May 23), followed by ministerial-level meetings on Sunday, while the leaders' summit will commence next Monday.
Themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', the summit aims to serve as a foundation for regional and global engagement.
Malaysia is committed to strengthening Asean centrality, fostering economic cooperation, and championing the principles of inclusivity and sustainability.
In conjunction with the summit, six highways and 25 major roads in the capital will be closed or diverted in stages to facilitate smooth traffic flow and ensure the security of the event. - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger cooperation between Asean countries and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to end Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and go against the principles of international law. 'It's contradictory when they issue statements of condemnation, yet continue to supply or sell weapons to Israel. Such actions violate the principles of international law and humanitarian norms. He said the national oil company's move to downsize its workforce was instead due to global challenges. The restructuring process, he said, is necessary given the decline in crude oil prices. Fadillah also plans to meet with PETRONAS to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why PETRONAS has to relook its entire operation. 'I am planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of lay-offs can be reduced, if not avoided,' Bernama reported him as saying after the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here yesterday. On June 5, PETRONAS president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil company would be cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Following the joint declaration, the Prime Minister's Office said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

Royal warning on haj travel scams

His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. His Royal Highness also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs, Bernama reported. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely.
