Tourism revival goes into reverse

Over the past three years, Thai tourism has been struggling to regain the peak it once reached prior to the pandemic, while neighbouring countries Malaysia and Vietnam have already surpassed their performance in 2019, recording 37 million and 17 million tourist arrivals, respectively.
The closest opportunity occurred in 2024 when Thailand welcomed 35.5 million foreign tourists, an increase of 26% year-on-year.
However, repeating the success of 2019 when 39.9 million foreign tourists arrived and spending hit 1.9 trillion baht is unlikely to occur in 2025, given that Thailand only attracted 16.6 million foreign arrivals in the first half, dipping 4.6% year-on-year.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is scheduled to unveil its marketing direction for 2026 today under the "Healing is a new Luxury" theme, as well as the 2026 target for the international market, which is expected to be only 1.63 trillion baht from 36 million visitors, while targeting 214 million domestic trips, generating 1.17 trillion baht.
Even if Thailand was actually able to achieve the revenue goal of 2.8 trillion baht next year, there is still a long way to reach the 3 trillion baht earned in 2019.
ARDUOUS TASK
During the pandemic, Thailand saw a sharp plunge from 39.9 million tourists in 2019 to just 427,000 in 2021, a decrease of approximately 93 times.
A modest rebound just began in the second half of 2022 after the government lifted entry restrictions on July 1, including the Thailand Pass registration and mandatory health insurance.
Signs of hope became more evident in 2023, when the country experienced an unexpected surge to 28 million tourists, up from only 11 million in 2022. This growth was largely driven by the reopening of China's borders in January 2023.
At the time, the TAT anticipated a smooth path to full recovery, fuelled by pent-up demand across global markets.
However, a closer look in 2024 revealed that the Chinese market, which accounted for 25% of total visitors in 2019, had been recovering slowly.
Its visitors to Thailand might appear to have grown impressively, doubling from 3.5 million in 2023 to 6.73 million in 2024, but the growth trend weakened significantly toward the end of the year.
A staggering 453.7% increase in January 2024 dwindled to just 25.6% in December, despite it being the high season.
In the first half of this year, the crisis in the Chinese market has become more apparent, with only 2.26 million arrivals, a 34% year-on-year decline.
While the sluggish Chinese economy has been a contributing factor over the past two years, it alone cannot explain the downturn as other countries have continued to attract large amounts of Chinese travellers.
Vietnam saw a 144% increase to 2.7 million in the first six months of this year, while Japan recorded a 62.9% rise to 3.92 million.
Yuthasak Supasorn, former governor of the TAT, said that the market downturn in the past few years mostly stemmed from Asian travellers, particularly Chinese, which saw the daily average drop by half, from 21,380 in January 2025 to an average of 12,000 daily visitors in the first six months.
He said that if this trend persists in the second half, Thailand might have only 4-5 million Chinese visitors in 2025, which will be the first time in 12 years that the number has fallen below the 5-million benchmark, excluding the Covid-19 lockdown period.
CHRONIC ILLNESS
The main obstacles to the goal of 40 million tourists have been mostly attributed to prolonged internal factors, particularly safety issues, which were like a chronic illness, said Mr Yuthasak.
Every tragic incident in the past always led to a dramatic drop in the Chinese market, including the Erawan shrine bombing in 2015 and the deadly boat accident in Phuket in 2018.
This year, the abduction of the Chinese actor Wang Xing from Thailand, plus the collapse of the 30-storey building intended to house the State Audit Office on March 28, were the final nails in the coffin, which led to a drastic fall of inbound Chinese.
According to the latest Chinese Traveller Sentiment Report by Dragon Trail International in April, the safety perception of Thailand has plunged to 19%, from 26% in September 2024.
These concerns were echoed by the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024, in which Thailand's ranking in the travel and tourism socioeconomic impact section plunged to 106, while the safety and security index ranking nosedived from 86 to 102, stemming from low confidence in local police and in safety walking alone at night.
Mr Yuthasak said it will be difficult for Thailand to return to the glory days if does not seriously tackle these problems.
"Thailand has been resilient in every crisis. But the current situation is different as we've lost the ability to adapt to changes and cannot solve the ongoing decline in confidence," he said.
He said the only way Thailand can reach 40 million annual arrivals is by having the same Chinese market volumes as in 2019.
INADEQUATE COMPENSATION
Mr Yuthasak, who was in charge during the peak period in 2019 and the rock-bottom period in 2021, said that even though Thailand could compensate for the lack of the Chinese market and gain a large volume, the remaining question is about revenue, noting that it would be hard to match the 1.9 trillion baht recorded in 2019.
He said the Malaysian market surged to No.1 for Thailand in the first half, but their spending power is questionable.
In terms of revenue, Malaysians spent 21,450 baht during a stay of 4.17 days on average, while Chinese travellers spent 42,428 baht during their 7.35-day tour.
"Every single Chinese tourist we lose means we must fill the revenue gap with two Malaysian tourists, which might not be practical, considering the stark contrast between a population of 35 million in Malaysia and 1.4 billion in China," said Mr Yuthasak.
To fix the income gap, TAT this year also put more focus on European travellers, whose spending per head is twice as high as the Chinese.
Suksit Suvunditkul, president of the southern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, said the long-haul markets in the last high season were extremely robust, as they helped push up average room rates in four- and five-star hotels in Phuket to a record high.
However, the situation was a stark contrast entering the low season, as the island experienced a quieter period than the same time in 2023–24.
In June 2025, Mr Suksit said the occupancy rate in Phuket stood at 59%, down from 72% in the corresponding period in 2024 and about the same level as in 2023, but the average room rate was recorded at only 2,394 baht, trailing behind 2,746 baht in 2024 and 2,617 baht in 2023.
"The situation in this low season is more severe than those of the past few years. Hotels that still perform well are those that can target Indian and Middle East markets," he said.
Mr Yuthasak said Thailand not only lost market share due to poor tourist safety, but its old charm as an affordable destination was no longer attracting tourists due to soaring living costs.
According to the 2024 TTDI, Thailand's price competitiveness sits at 48th, dropping by three spots from the previous survey.
This is obviously against the travel trend on the mainland, where Qióngyóu (budget travel) has been trending among travellers seeking the best value for money trips.
Mr Yuthasak suggested Thailand use this crisis to change from a "More for Less" to a "Less for More" approach by setting a revenue target based on appropriate arrival numbers that match carrying capacity and can ensure quality tourism experiences.
"Optimisation for maximum economic impacts is the key to solving this crisis. This new direction might need 2-3 years to achieve, but Thailand still has potential due to its strong foundations in tourism and services," he said.

Clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces continued into early Monday morning as their leaders are set for talks Monday to halt the deadliest clash between the neighbours in more than a decade, with the US sending mediators after President Donald Trump used tariffs threats to press for a ceasefire. Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet are scheduled to meet in Kuala Lumpur at 3pm local time (2pm in Thailand), according to Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub. The gathering will be at the office of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who's facilitating the dialogue in his role as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The first talks since clashes began on July 24 come within 48 hours of Trump saying Thai and Cambodian leaders had agreed to 'quickly work out a ceasefire'. After separate calls with Mr Phumtham and Mr Hun Manet on Saturday, Trump had threatened that Washington will not do a trade deal with either country as long as the fighting continued. The clashes continued into early Monday morning ahead of the talks, with the Thai army reporting fighting at multiple locations along the border. Cambodia's defence ministry said Thai forces used heavy shelling at two locations from around 3am, the Khmer Times reported, citing a spokesperson. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said US officials are on the ground in Malaysia. China, the top trading partner for both the Southeast Asian nations and a major backer of Phnom Penh, is due to participate in the talks, officials from Cambodia said. 'Both President Trump and I remain engaged with our respective counterparts for each country and are monitoring the situation very closely,' Rubio said in a statement. 'We want this conflict to end as soon as possible.' Trump's tariff threat set off a flurry of diplomatic activities on Sunday with Anwar eventually getting the two sides to agree to meet. Rubio also spoke to the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia and urged them to immediately de-escalate tensions while offering US help in future talks. Speaking to reporters just before meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday, Trump acknowledged the phone calls with the two leaders. 'I called the prime ministers of each and I said, 'We're not going to make a trade deal unless you settle the war.' A lot of people killed,' Trump said. 'And I think by the time I got off, I think they want to settle now.' With Trump's Aug 1 tariff deadline looming, trade-reliant Thailand wants to avoid antagonising the US president, especially as its officials have been holding talks to lower the steep 36% planned levy on its exports. Trump has claimed credit for helping halt border clashes earlier this year between India and Pakistan by leveraging trade measures, and is now applying similar pressure in Southeast Asia. 'When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!,' Trump said on Truth Social after speaking to Thai and Cambodian leaders Saturday. Thailand's trade talks with the US have included offering expanded access for American goods in an effort to narrow a $46 billion trade surplus with Washington. Neighbouring Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam have already secured trade deals with the US in recent weeks. Thailand and Cambodia shouldn't have needed the pressure from Trump, and should have turned to Asean as a natural middle ground to mediate the conflict well before US intervention, said Fuadi Pitsuwan, a lecturer in international relations at Thammasat University in Bangkok. 'In the end, Trump will likely frame the situation as a win: he enforced a ceasefire while securing leverage' to impose punitive tariff rates, he said. Despite the economic stakes, Thailand has taken a firm stance ahead of Monday's talks. Officials say any ceasefire must be tied to bilateral resolution of the dispute, the withdrawal of troops, and a halt to the use of lethal weapons. Cambodia, by contrast, has said it is open to an unconditional cessation of hostilities. The talks are 'intended to listen to all proposals that could contribute to restoring peace,' spokesman Jirayu said. 'The Thai government remains committed to defending the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Every square inch of it.' The conflict, which escalated from months of simmering border tension, has killed more than 30 people and displaced over 150,000 civilians on both sides. Thailand has reported 22 fatalities, including eight soldiers, while Cambodia has confirmed 13 deaths, including five military personnel. Heavy artillery fire continued Sunday across their 800-kilometre (500-mile) border, with both sides accusing each other of targeting civilians. Thailand has responded by deploying F-16s and Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets to strike Cambodian military positions. Thailand and Cambodia share a history of border disputes, though relations have remained largely stable since a deadly 2011 clash that left dozens dead. The last major flare-up centred on the Preah Vihear temple, a historic flashpoint rooted in colonial-era disagreements. Much of the current dispute stems from maps drawn on differing interpretations of early 20th-century Franco-Siamese treaties, which defined the border between Thailand and Cambodia, then part of French Indochina.

Growers of durian and coconut in Southeast Asia are expecting a hectic time ahead as they grapple with rising demand from mainland Chinese buyers who prefer high-quality fresh fruits against the backdrop of a weak consumption market. Malaysian fresh durians, which have witnessed an export boom since last year, are still in high demand ahead of the peak season in August, according to Guo Min, deputy marketing director with distributor Joy Wing Mau's China operations. "The growth trajectory remains robust and we foresee surging demand [for the fruit] next month," he said in an interview, adding that Malaysian durians were the most sought-after by consumers among imported fruits. "We have got the logistics and warehousing arrangements ready to better serve the market." Malaysia started exporting fresh durians to China last year, shipping 24.8 million ringgit (190 million baht) worth of them between August and December, according to data from Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. In the first four months this year, Malaysia's share of the durian market in China had grown tenfold, Guo added. Thailand held a 57% share of China's US$6.99 billion (226 billion baht) durian market in 2024, Chinese customs data showed. Guo spoke on the sidelines of a "matchmaking meeting" between international suppliers and Chinese traders in Shanghai on Friday, organised by the China International Import Expo (CIIE) Bureau, a unit of the Ministry of Commerce, ahead of the annual trade show later this year. Chinese consumers' rising awareness of health and food security remained the key growth drivers for imported fruits, according to Allen Zeng, deputy director of brand with Goodfarmer Fresh Fruit Trading, which deals with fruit exports from the Philippines and Vietnam to China. "They underscore the importance of freshness and they believe in big brands that can guarantee quality and security of the products," he said at the CIIE-arranged event. "Exports of fruits including durians and pineapples turned out to be resilient even though local consumers are cautious on spending." Many traders at the CIIE event said they would also introduce higher-quality coconuts and cherries to the Chinese market at the CIIE, the world's largest trade show featuring imports, which will be held from Nov 5 to 10 in Shanghai. The Chinese economy has been under deflationary pressure over the past two years due to sluggish domestic demand and excess production capacity. Inflation quickened at an annualised pace of 0.1% in June, ending five months of weaker prices, government reports showed. The CIIE, an annual event launched in 2018, is considered by many foreign businesses a prime marketing opportunity. Beijing encourages local firms to buy foreign-made goods as a way of showing China's commitment to free trade and expanding access to its market. In 2024, companies racked up US$80 billion worth of deals during the six-day show, a 2% increase from a year earlier. Deals involving food and ­agricultural products provided a bright spot, reflecting growing awareness of food security and nutrition in China, analysts said. To date, the CIIE Bureau said exhibitors had booked 300,000 square metres of space to display their products and technologies at the six-day event. Last year, more than 3,500 international companies took part in the show.

Two Buri Ram temple sites closed due to border tensions

Phanom Rung Historical Park and Muang Tam Sanctuary in Buri Ram province have been closed until further notice, the Department of Fine Arts said on Saturday. The closure comes in response to escalating unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border, Fine Arts Office 10 said on its Facebook page. Security concerns made it prudent to restrict public access to the sites. The two ancient sites will remain closed until the situation improves, the office said. In a related development, Thai Airways International said it was cancelling one of its Bangkok-Phnom Penh round-trip services in light of current developments. From July 27 to 31, it said, Flight TG584/TG585 on the Bangkok-Phnom Penh route has been cancelled. Flight TG586/TG587 will continue to operate according to the normal schedule, using an aircraft with more seats to accommodate more passengers. 'Thai Airways is closely monitoring and evaluating the situation and is operating flights under the highest safety standards,' it said.
