China's imports of fruits to grow with big appetite for durians, coconuts

Growers of durian and coconut in Southeast Asia are expecting a hectic time ahead as they grapple with rising demand from mainland Chinese buyers who prefer high-quality fresh fruits against the backdrop of a weak consumption market.
Malaysian fresh durians, which have witnessed an export boom since last year, are still in high demand ahead of the peak season in August, according to Guo Min, deputy marketing director with distributor Joy Wing Mau's China operations.
"The growth trajectory remains robust and we foresee surging demand [for the fruit] next month," he said in an interview, adding that Malaysian durians were the most sought-after by consumers among imported fruits. "We have got the logistics and warehousing arrangements ready to better serve the market."
Malaysia started exporting fresh durians to China last year, shipping 24.8 million ringgit (190 million baht) worth of them between August and December, according to data from Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. In the first four months this year, Malaysia's share of the durian market in China had grown tenfold, Guo added.
Thailand held a 57% share of China's US$6.99 billion (226 billion baht) durian market in 2024, Chinese customs data showed.
Guo spoke on the sidelines of a "matchmaking meeting" between international suppliers and Chinese traders in Shanghai on Friday, organised by the China International Import Expo (CIIE) Bureau, a unit of the Ministry of Commerce, ahead of the annual trade show later this year.
Chinese consumers' rising awareness of health and food security remained the key growth drivers for imported fruits, according to Allen Zeng, deputy director of brand with Goodfarmer Fresh Fruit Trading, which deals with fruit exports from the Philippines and Vietnam to China.
"They underscore the importance of freshness and they believe in big brands that can guarantee quality and security of the products," he said at the CIIE-arranged event. "Exports of fruits including durians and pineapples turned out to be resilient even though local consumers are cautious on spending."
Many traders at the CIIE event said they would also introduce higher-quality coconuts and cherries to the Chinese market at the CIIE, the world's largest trade show featuring imports, which will be held from Nov 5 to 10 in Shanghai.
The Chinese economy has been under deflationary pressure over the past two years due to sluggish domestic demand and excess production capacity. Inflation quickened at an annualised pace of 0.1% in June, ending five months of weaker prices, government reports showed.
The CIIE, an annual event launched in 2018, is considered by many foreign businesses a prime marketing opportunity. Beijing encourages local firms to buy foreign-made goods as a way of showing China's commitment to free trade and expanding access to its market.
In 2024, companies racked up US$80 billion worth of deals during the six-day show, a 2% increase from a year earlier. Deals involving food and ­agricultural products provided a bright spot, reflecting growing awareness of food security and nutrition in China, analysts said.
To date, the CIIE Bureau said exhibitors had booked 300,000 square metres of space to display their products and technologies at the six-day event. Last year, more than 3,500 international companies took part in the show.

Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Engineering has initiated the country's first 5.5G field test, paving the way for a real-time navigation system and automated factories as well as 6G development in the near future. The university and related parties jointly conducted this experiment within its 5G-A Spectrum Joint Exploration project in its regulatory sandbox, running from late last year through September 2025. Trairat Viriyasirikul, acting secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said the NBTC office allowed the university to set up the sandbox for testing new innovations and technologies, including allowing use of the upper band of the 6GHz frequency for the testing phase of the project. Telecom industry operators support the 5.5G network being used in the project. An NBTC source who requested anonymity said Thailand is expected to officially start using 5.5G technology by the end of 2025 through a partnership between Chinese tech giant Huawei and local service providers such as True Corporation and Advanced Info Service. The partnership includes the government sector, in line with the Thailand 4.0 policy. Chulalongkorn University's 5G-A Spectrum Joint Exploration project recently invited related parties to present their test results. The test demonstrated that 5G-Advanced technology can transmit data downlinks at a speed of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), 10 times faster than 5G technology for outdoor usage, and a speed up to 1Gbps for indoor usage. 5.5G, known as 5G-Advanced in full, is a leap in technology that will upgrade the entire mobile network system to be faster, smarter and save more energy than ever. It delivers a peak download speed of up to 100Gbps, compared to 5G's 10Gbps. It is ideal for real-time tasks such as augmented reality or virtual reality, gaming and even remote surgery. Currently, more than 60 network providers around the world, including those in China and Hong Kong, have started offering 5.5G services after 3GPP, the telecommunications standardisation organisation, released the first draft of 5.5G standards this year. Abel Deng, president of Huawei Asia-Pacific's carrier sales business, said earlier that a combination of generative artificial intelligence and 5.5G would unlock new creative and economic potential in the Asia-Pacific region.

Epson unit upbeat on large format printing market

Despite the challenging economy, Epson (Thailand) Co Ltd still sees an opportunity in the large format printing market in Thailand thanks to the ongoing digital transformation in the country and demand for indoor signage. "We acknowledge the unfavourable economic conditions that have resulted in cautious spending among organisations. However, the shift from analog to digital transformation continues," said Yunyong Muneemongkoltorn, managing director of Epson (Thailand). The company is targeting the segments of top tier signage displays and decorative pieces. These customer groups include luxury brands that require high quality prints such as cosmetic brands that have outlets in department stores. In 2024, Epson Thailand successfully maintained its leadership in the large format printer segment by gaining a 28% market share. The company continues to empower customers by offering an end-to-end ecosystem that integrates hardware, software, services, and business models, Mr Yunyong added. Its customer base ranges from textile manufacturers and print service providers to designers, brand owners, and emerging entrepreneurs. To reinforce its leadership in the signage printing area, Epson has launched three new 64-inch eco-solvent printers. They include the flagship SC-S9130 model, featuring an 11-colour ink set, along with a new green ink that significantly expands the range of colours. This innovation delivers vibrant, true-to-life output for premium applications such as luxury brand posters, vehicle wraps, cosmetic labels, and fine art prints. The SC-S8130 model supports six-colour printing and is equipped with a Hot Swap function, allowing ink replacement during operation for users who demand both speed and colour accuracy. The third model -- SC-S7130 -- has been engineered for cost efficiency, serving print service providers that focus on small volumes. As Thailand has already passed its tourism peak of 40 million tourists, the country requires luxury marketing and new public-private partnership investment in luxury tourism that targets the growing number of affluent travellers from Asia-Pacific in order to maximise growth, says Galaxy Resorts Thailand. It also said the delay of the entertainment complex bill would make Thailand lose competitiveness with other Asian and the Middle Eastern countries. "The battleground for Asia-Pacific now is the premium and luxury sector," said Kevin Clayton, chief brand officer of Galaxy Resorts Thailand. According to the Pacific Asia Travel Association, Asia-Pacific tourism generated over 648 million regional trips last year, and it is expected to reach nearly 700 million and 800 million trips, respectively, this year and in 2027. Mr Clayton said Thailand is at the centre of the major growth and could benefit from the growing middle class in the region, such as those of India and China. There were over 6.2 million affluent people and 168 million upper middle class people in China who are fuelling luxury consumption overseas and are opting for trips within the region. He said although Bangkok is competing at the forefront as one of the top most visited cities worldwide along with London and Istanbul, driven by increasing air capacity, overall Thailand is highly unlikely to gain 35 million foreign arrivals this year. It is hampered by sluggish Chinese arrivals, with the unsafe perception of Thailand due to the border scam and the latest Thailand-Cambodia border skirmishes, which many countries have warned their citizens about. Mr Clayton said in the short run, Thailand needs to solve these unsafe narratives, including scams against tourists in the city, through promotion with global celebrities, key opinion leaders and influencers along with cracking down on these illegal operators, since safety is the top priority for affluent tourists. It should also upgrade the major Thai tourism website to be easier and more attractive for foreigners to search for information, in the same way that the Japan National Tourism Organization website is able to do. He added that luxury tourism operators should use integration to promote their services as consolidated offerings. Beyond that, Thailand should enhance public-private partnerships to build new infrastructure and attractions that offer unique experiences, including through integrated resorts. He said an integrated resort developer like Galaxy Entertainment Group can complement Thailand's existing strengths in hospitality, wellness, food and culture, with new thrilling attractions such as concerts and festival halls, arts exhibitions, along with premium gaming services. Given Thailand's entertainment complex bill remains on hold, Mr Clayton said Galaxy Resort remains patient. The company respects the government's decision and public discussion around the process, and continues its presence in the nation. Meanwhile, in Asia-Pacific, the integrated resorts industry continues to evolve. Developments include the additional phases of Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, UAE's first casino resort by Wynn in 2027, as well as Japan's MGM Osaka in 2030. Even emerging destinations such as Vietnam now have three major integrated resorts. By delaying the entertainment complex bill, Thailand is not competing effectively with these destinations, said Mr Clayton. "There is a lost opportunity for the country more than obviously the company that is investing [in it]," he said. For Galaxy Entertainment Group, its Galaxy Macau is slated to open a fourth phase with five new luxury hotels, retail and family attractions in 2027. Given that Macau's government reduced its national gross gaming revenue forecast this year by 5%, Mr Clayton said Galaxy is still positive about its business outlook since the company is targeting the premium gaming sector, not the mass market like some other resorts in Macau. Its gross gaming revenue market share in the second quarter exceeded 20.3% in Macau, he said. Macau last year welcomed nearly 35 million tourists, with 46% staying an average of 2.3 days, generating over US$23 billion gross gaming revenue and $9 billion non-gaming revenue.
