What is the best £5,000 used car for a motorway commute?
I am buying a car for my 27-mile commute, two thirds of which is on motorways. I would like a small- to medium-sized car (we already have a family car), ideally no more than 10 years old, with an automatic gearbox, good comfort with minimal road and wind noise. The car must also be ULEZ -compliant and fuel efficient. My budget is £5,000, although I can stretch to £8,000 for the right car. Can you help?

Dear SS,
I'll do my best, although I think you might have to start stretching that budget straight away.
The car that best fits your needs is the Hyundai i30. It's well equipped, comfortable, reliable and perfectly at home on the motorway. I'd go for a diesel engine, from which you can expect to see real-world fuel economy upwards of 50mpg, along with car tax of only £20 a year. The dual-clutch automatic gearbox has proven to be pretty solid.
The i30 is also good value, so prices are reasonable and finding one within your budget shouldn't be hard. Just make sure you choose the face-lifted model sold from 2015 onwards; these are the only ones that are ULEZ-compliant.
I found a 2015 example with 60,000 miles and a full service history, in well-specified SE trim, for £7,500. It's the top end of your budget, but it has everything you require and should provide years of trouble-free service as well as super-low running costs.
If comfort is a priority, though, no car in this category does it better than the Skoda Octavia. Your budget just squeezes you into a ULEZ-compliant diesel example, like the 90,000-mile 2.0 TDI that I found with one owner from new and a full history.
The plush SE L trim provides more than sufficient creature comforts, while diesels have the more reliable wet-clutch DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) transmission. It won't be quite as cheap to run as the Hyundai, but it should still achieve 50mpg on average, with road tax at £35 per year – so it's hardly going to break the bank.
If you prefer to stick to the lower end of your budget, look at a Vauxhall Astra; its sheer ubiquity means it's cheap. Take the 1.6-litre petrol-engined Tech Line auto I found – a 2015 model with 60,000 miles, a full service history and a recent timing belt change, all for £4,800.
As solid, dependable, unassuming daily transport the sixth-generation Astra is perfectly fine. Just keep in mind that you probably won't achieve much more than 40mpg on a run from an older petrol automatic such as this one.

Everything we know about Hyundai's funky new EV – well before it's revealed
New model will lead brand's push for more customers in key markets Open gallery Close Hyundai is readying an affordable rival for the Renault 4 as it looks to reinforce its position in Europe and get significantly closer to its Kia sibling for sales success. The imminent arrival of the Bayon-sized EV, which is likely to be badged Ioniq 2, shows the breadth of Hyundai's expanding line-up as it pushes into the booming new electric hatchback segment. The move is intended to bring new buyers to the brand. In the first half of 2025, Hyundai sold 265,680 cars in Europe, just 7939 behind its Kia sibling. The arrival of the Ioniq 2 is most notable because it will push the Korean brand into a completely new segment. Understood by Autocar to be twinned with sibling brand Kia's incoming EV2, the Ioniq 2 will plug the gap between the compact Inster and the Kona Electric in Hyundai's current six-strong electric vehicle line-up. Pictures of the car testing confirm that it will be close in size to the combustion-engined Bayon, giving the brand a foothold in a segment that is growing in popularity with the launch of the Renault 4 this summer and the imminent arrivals of the Volkswagen ID 2X and Skoda Epiq. The model is set to be revealed at the Munich motor show next month and will go on sale in the third quarter of 2026. It is understood that Kia's EV2 will arrive a few months before it. Hyundai Europe boss Xavier Martinet told Autocar: 'We are very much involved with the electrification of our line-up and to increase our electrified mix in the coming years.' These spy shots confirm that the Ioniq 2 will be a raised hatchback with a raked roofline, similar in positioning to the incoming ID 2X. Under that heavy camouflage, the design at the front is expected to mirror that of the new Ioniq 6, with slimmed LEDs and an aggressively styled 'technical' look. Inside, the Ioniq 2 will have a more tech-focused cabin than that of the hybrid-powered Tucson. Offering what Hyundai refers to as a 'step change' in usability for its models compared with the current Ioniq line-up, this includes a combined instrument and infotainment display set-up that spans roughly half the width of the dashboard. Like the EV2, the Ioniq 2 will be built on the scalable E-GMP platform used by nearly all EVs in the Hyundai Motor Group, comprising Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. It's therefore likely to get a similar set-up to that of the slightly larger Kia EV3, which is offered with either a 58.3kWh or an 81.4kWh battery pack for ranges of 267 and 372 miles respectively. All versions of the EV3 are powered by a single electric motor that sends 201bhp and 209lb ft to the front wheels. Pricing for the new crossover is likely to be close to that of the EV2, at around £25,000. Join our WhatsApp community and be the first to read about the latest news and reviews wowing the car world. It's the same heart that made these cars so special when they were new. This one benefits from a few smart updates for better reliability and drivability: the current owner reports a larger aluminum radiator and fan to keep things cool, plus a 90-amp alternator to keep the electrics happy. Power goes to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox, giving you a little extra flexibility over the original 4-speed without losing the vintage feel. When it's time to slow things down, Wilwood front disc brakes give you more stopping power than the factory setup, making it just as confident coming to a halt as it is pulling away. Final thoughts This 1967 Series I 4.2 Roadster has that unmistakable E-Type stance, the kind of curves that seem to move even when the car's parked, and a restoration that means you can actually drive it without holding your breath. The upgrades are smart, the condition speaks for itself, and the overall vibe is pure, unfiltered classic Jaguar. About the Author Michelle Nati View Profile

Audi RS6 Avant Is Having Its Best Sales Year Ever
Widely considered the best M5 manual transmission model, the E39 M5 wasn't the most powerful, but it was the most engaging. The 2025 Hyundai Elantra is a handsome, fuel-efficient, roomy, and safe compact sedan. While it might not sell in the same numbers as the Civic or the Corolla, it's worthy of consideration because it offers so much for so little. Buyers Still Love A Fast Wagon They may set car enthusiasts' hearts aflutter, but performance cars are often niche models that struggle to justify their existence with sales. But the Audi RS6 Avant isn't one of those unfortunate cases. Audi says the high-performance wagon is having its best sales year ever. And that's despite the current generation being close to retirement. The RS6 Avant enjoyed record half-year sales, which were also up 41% over the same period in 2024, Alina Seysen, Audi spokesperson for sales and marketing, said in a recent interview with German business newspaper Automobilwoche. Seysen was referring to global sales, and Audi doesn't break out United States sales of the RS6 Avant from the broader A6 lineup. Defying Age Source: Audi The current-generation C8 RS6 Avant was introduced six years ago, meaning it's nearing the end of its lifecycle. A redesigned version of the A6 Avant is already on sale in Europe, in fact, with the same updates the U.S. will see on the next-generation A6 sedan when it arrives Stateside this fall. Sales usually decline as a given vehicle ages, so the resurgence of interest in the C8 RS6 Avant is impressive. Granted, Audi has been steadily upgrading the C8 since its launch. It arrived in the U.S. as a 2021 model with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (with mild-hybrid assist) making 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, but a Performance version was introduced for 2024 with 621 hp and 627 lb-ft. For 2025, Audi introduced a limited-edition RS6 Avant GT with additional performance upgrades like adjustable coil-over suspension, a re-tuned rear differential, and carbon-fiber components that helped shave 88 pounds for the curb weight. Perhaps more importantly though, the GT wears a livery inspired by Audi's IMSA GTO race cars of the 1980s. Production is limited to 660 units globally (including 85 for the U.S.). Not The Last Of The V8s Source: Audi In addition to Audi doing things to keep earning attention for the RS6 Avant, the automaker may be in a better position to cater to performance-wagon fans than its rivals. As Motor1 points out, Mercedes hasn't introduced a new AMG E63 wagon yet, and the RS6 Avant is arguably a purer experience than the plug-in hybrid BMW M5 Touring. The next RS6 Avant may go the same route as its Bavarian rival, though. While Audi is expected to keep the V8, a plug-in hybrid system might be part of the plan. And the automaker's performance future won't be all about wagons. Next month, Audi will unveil a sports car concept that it's billing as its 'TT Moment 2.0.'
