Algeria deepens trade ties with other African countries as it gears up for Africa's biggest marketplace
In a keynote address during the Algeria Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 Business Roadshow, Algeria's Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, H.E. Prof. Kamal Rezig stated that this includes enhancing continental connectivity through infrastructure projects such as the Trans-Sahara Highway and the Zouerate Road project linking the Tindouf border with Mauritania and the Nigeria-Algeria gas pipeline and fibre optic cable.
'In order to improve the business climate in Algeria, the State has endeavoured to ensure a stable, transparent, stimulating and attractive economic and institutional environment for investment. This is in addition to ensuring stability of legislation that regulates local and foreign investment, and simplifying administrative procedures, development and strengthening of the banking system, the capital market and the insurance sector, as well as development of human resources capabilities and skills, with the aim of adapting its economy to global transformations,' H.E. Rezig said, adding that besides developing key sectors, the country is also promoting exports in the continent within the framework of AfCFTA.
In 2024, Algeria's share of total intra-African trade stood at 2.2%, marginally growing from 1.9% in 2022, according to African Trade Report 2025 (http://apo-opa.co/44BzJhH). Mineral fuels and oils make up 91.5% of its exports. The country's top-five African export partners in 2023 based on volumes are Tunisia (70.7%), South Africa (6.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (3.6%), Nigeria (3.1%) and Senegal (2.7%) states the Country at a Glance: Algeria 2024 report (http://apo-opa.co/4m4chRF) while its top-five import partners are Mauritania (38.8%), Tunisia (32.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (9%), Morocco (6%) and Uganda (2.2%).
The Algeria IATF2025 Business Roadshow focused on promoting intra-African trade, bringing together government officials, the trade community, including businesses, investors, and executives from African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). Hosted by Afreximbank, in collaboration with the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, the roadshow was one of the five roadshows hosted in key cities including Accra, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Lagos in the run up to the fourth edition of IATF, Africa's premier trade and investment event that is held biennially, scheduled to take place in Algiers, Algeria, from 4 – 10 September 2025 hosted by the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. IATF provides a platform for businesses to showcase goods and exchange trade and investment information within the continent's single market.
The Chairman of IATF2025 Advisory Council and former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said that intra-African trade presents a huge opportunity for African economies to enhance their resilience in today's rapidly changing world.
'Through the IATF, the largest, go-to trade and investment fair on the continent, Africa needs to join hands and build on the gains that have been achieved so far in promoting trade with itself under the AfCFTA framework. AfCFTA provides an opportunity for the continent to achieve economic emancipation and self-reliance and build the Africa We Want. This will help unlock the continent's vast potential while accelerating industrialisation and job creation,' H.E. Obasanjo added.
The past three editions of IATF have attracted over 70,000 participants and 4,500 exhibitors, and hosted buyers and sellers from over 130 countries, generating more than $100 billion in trade and investment deals. This provides a glimpse of the immense potential that exists for intra-African trade and investment.
Afreximbank's Executive Vice-President, Intra-African Trade&Export Development, Mrs Kanayo Awani noted that whereas conventional wisdom attributes Africa's low intra-continental trade to infrastructure deficits, a more fundamental barrier is the lack of access to trade and market information.
'Afreximbank launched the IATF —not merely as an exhibition but as a marketplace for the AfCFTA and a platform to close the trade information gap. Since its inception in 2018, IATF has held three resoundingly successful fairs. In these fairs, Algeria showed up strongly and directly benefited from facilitated trade and investment deals worth over $2 billion. Now, Algeria has the opportunity to host the fourth edition. As Africa's largest country by land and the fourth-largest economy by GDP, Algeria has both the duty and the opportunity to lead. Algeria's competitive advantages—energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, financial services, light manufacturing, ICT, and automotive assembly—are all primed for scale and export across the continent,' Mrs Awani said. She challenged businesses and government agencies in Algeria and the North African region to take centre stage at IATF2025, where over 2,000 exhibitors from Africa and beyond will showcase their products to more than 35,000 visitors and buyers from over 140 countries, resulting in trade and investment deals in excess of US$44 billion.
IATF2025 will feature a trade exhibition by countries and businesses; and the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme spotlighting cultural industries with a dedicated exhibition and summit on fashion, music, film, arts and craft, sports, literature, gastronomy and culinary arts. It will also include a four-day Trade and Investment Forum featuring leading African and international speakers; and the Africa Automotive Show for auto manufacturers, assemblers, original equipment manufacturers and component suppliers. Special Days will highlight countries, public and private sector entities, tourism, cultural attractions, and Global Africa Day celebrating ties with the African diaspora. Additional activities include business-to-business and business-to-government matchmaking, the AU Youth Start-Up programme, the Africa Research and Innovation Hub, and the African Sub-Sovereign Governments Network (AfSNET) to promote local trade and cultural exchanges. The IATF Virtual platform is also live, connecting exhibitors and visitors year-round.
Planning for IATF2025 is in top gear with significant progress made in ensuring a seamless logistical experience and delivering a successful event.
The theme of Algeria IATF2025 Business Roadshow was 'Harnessing Regional and Continental Value Chains: Accelerating Africa's Industrialisation and Global Competitiveness under the AfCFTA'. South African jobless rate rises, highlighting coalition challenge
South Africa's unemployment rate rose for the second quarter in a row, official data showed on Tuesday, highlighting one of the biggest challenges faced by the country's year-old coalition government. The official unemployment rate stood at 33.2% in April-June, up from 32.9% in January-March, one of the highest rates worldwide. The coalition government formed after the African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in the 2024 election has struggled to achieve a meaningful drop in the jobless rate, despite making that a priority. Statistics South Africa said the number of unemployed people increased to 8.367 million in the second quarter, though there was a slight drop in an expanded definition of unemployment, which includes those discouraged from seeking work. Six of the 10 industries tracked by the statistics agency recorded employment decreases, while four had increases in the latest three-month period. The most jobs were lost in community and social services, agriculture and finance. Top statistics official Risenga Maluleke said it was too early to tell whether U.S. tariffs were having an effect on the jobs data. South African exports to the U.S. were hit with a 30% tariff last week, the highest rate in sub-Saharan Africa. Maluleke dismissed criticism by the former head of major local bank Capitec that the statistics agency was underestimating the number of people with informal jobs. He told a press conference his agency had always measured that and made its numbers available, adding that South Africa would be making "a big mistake as a country if we want to assume that we do not have an unemployment challenge". Desiree Manamela, chief director of labour statistics, said updates to the way Statistics SA collects unemployment data that will be rolled out in the next quarter were unlikely to significantly affect the official jobless rate. But they should allow the agency to include additional measures of the health of the economy in its reports, she said. I am delighted to be back in Addis Ababa, a city that is witnessing incredible transformation under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. If the transformation is happening in years, I can understand, but it is happening every hour, every day, every week, at scale. Speed and scale are now the hallmarks of Ethiopia. And scale is what we are signing onto today: the start of the pathway for the construction of the mega Bishoftu international airport. It is a testament to the power of vision, determination and resolve to put Africa at the top. Ethiopia airlines has put Africa at the top in global aviation. I am writing these remarks onboard the ET flight from Abidjan to Addis Ababa. In the air, on top, across 130 destinations, across 5 continents, Ethiopia Airlines makes Africa proud. With its 75 years of operational history, Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's oldest and best airline. It is critical for regional economic integration, connecting capitals, people and markets, with its globally rated cargo facilities. This was remarkable during the Covid19 pandemic. When many global airlines stopped flying., Ethiopian Airlines was in the air. It innovated by turning passenger cabins in its fleets to cargo facilities, moving goods, vaccines, medicines and equipment, across the world. Ethiopian Airlines have won the Skytrax 'Best Airline in Africa' award for seven consecutive years. I applaud the CEO of Ethiopian airlines, Mr. Mesfin Bekele, who is doing an outstanding job, and the Board of Directors, Management and staff of the airline for their incredible top-notch performance and for making Africa proud. I understand that Mr. Mesfin Bekele had wanted to retire twice and twice he has been encouraged to stay on a little longer. That is not surprising, for as the saying goes, the price for great work is more work. I understand that he will be retiring in another year, and you already have a clear succession plan. There will be no surprises. That is the mark of a great institution. I wish to commend you, the Board of Directors, Management and staff for making Ethiopian Airlines such a profitable company, with $7.2 billion in revenues in 2024, an increase of 14% from 2023. I learnt that you also increased your passenger numbers by 24%, to 19 million passengers. What a performance! The African Development Bank is proud to partner with Ethiopia in its vision to expand the operational and fleet capacity of the Ethiopian Airlines. That's why in 2016, one year after my election as President of the African Development Bank, we provided a $160-million corporate loan to Ethiopian Airlines for its expansion and fleet modernization. I was delighted on one of my trips from Addis to Abidjan, when suddenly the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines showed up and said they had changed the aircraft we would use to the new Airbus which was purchased with the financing from the African Development Bank. What a flight it was, for me and all my accompanying staff! I can still recall my photographer, Roland (who is here today), sitting comfortably and enjoying the flight, in the brand-new aircraft. From then, Ethiopian Airlines has not looked back. Today, its fleet expansion program will acquire an additional 114 aircrafts, to bring its fleet capacity to 240 aircrafts. To stay dominant, the government of Ethiopia is also expanding its airport facilities, especially for international flights. The Bole International airport, which currently is at 19 million out of its 25 million passenger capacity per year is no longer enough for the ambition of Ethiopia to be on top. The Prime Minister looks forward again! The new Bishoftu international airport will be a game changer for air transport in Africa and globally. The phase one of the Bishoftu airport will handle 60 million passengers per annum, which will rise to 110 million passengers per annum, in phase 2. The Bishoftu airport will enable Ethiopian Airlines to reduce its fuel consumption by 15%. It will also accommodate 3.7 million tons of cargo and provide parking for 270 aircrafts. The construction of the new Bishoftu airport will cost a total of $10 billion. The African Development Bank is delighted to have been selected as the Mandated Leader Arranger, Global Coordinator and Book Runner to mobilize $8 billion of debt financing towards the construction of the new airport, including up to $500 million of debt from the Bank. You can understand why. The African Development Bank is the largest financier of infrastructure in Africa. In the past ten years under my Presidency, the Bank has financed over $55 billion in infrastructure. We will do all we can to support Ethiopia to achieve its dream. I wish to highly commend the Honorable Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, for his strong leadership, for believing in the African Development Bank and for working closely with my staff to make this day a reality. You were with me in Abidjan on March 24, 2025, along with the the CEO of Ethiopian airlines, when you signed the Letter of Intent for the project with Vice President Nnenna Mwabufo. I am proud that the team of the Bank moved with speed and deployed a project preparation mission to Addis Ababa from 5th-9th May, 2025. And here we are today, signing the Mandate letter for the African Development Bank to mobilize the $8 billion for the construction of the new airport. I wish to commend the Government of Ethiopia for moving rapidly to relocate and financially settle all the 2,800 households that will be affected by the project, with transparency and accountability. I wish to assure you that the African Development Bank will deliver, so that this project can be delivered by Ethiopia for its people. As this will be my last official visit to Ethiopia, as President of the African Development Bank, I wish to use the opportunity to express my deep appreciation to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, as well as the Government of Ethiopia for all your support for the African Development Bank, my staff and I, over the past ten years. I wish to commend the Minister of Finance for his excellent support. I also wish to commend all my staff, especially my senior Vice President, Vice Presidents, General Counsel and our exemplary legal staff, Directors of the Bank, as well as the country manager and deputy director general and his team at the Bank's office in Addis Ababa. I wish to use this time to specially commend Leandre Bassole, the Country Manager for Ethiopia and the Deputy Director General, who is now taking on a new role as the Director General of the Central Africa region for the African Development Bank. Under you, Leandre, and with your leadership and strategic partnership, the Bank was able to secure this mandate. Well done! I have no doubt that you will excel in your new role. I am equally pleased that Olajide Oyewusi, the new Country Manager designate for Ethiopia and the Deputy Director General is here at the event. Given his extensive experience as a commercial banker, he will be able to put this to use to accelerate the Bank's delivery on the project. This will ensure a smooth leadership transition and stability in the operations of the African Development Bank in Ethiopia. I look forward to flying Ethiopian Airlines to come back here in few years and land at the Bishoftu International Airport. What a great day that will be! I will always have Ethiopia in my heart. China's Trinasolar unit delivers 300MWh BESS in Egypt ahead of schedule
Trina Storage, a subsidiary of China-based solar photovoltaics manufacturer Trinasolar, has delivered a 300MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Egypt ahead of its scheduled commercial operation date. The BESS facility, owned by Dubai-headquartered AMEA Power, is an extension of the company's operational 500 megawatt (MW) solar PV plant in Aswan governorate, Egypt, which was commissioned in December 2024. The 300MWh BESS is Egypt's first utility-scale solar and storage integrated facility, designed to enhance grid stability and support the country's clean energy transition. Trina Storage supplied its advanced Elementa 2 platform, covering the full scope from in-house LFP battery cells and DC compartments to the AC side, enabling connection to the national grid. 'Faced with the extremely high temperatures and complex power grid environment in the Middle East and North Africa, we completed the 300MWh energy storage project from equipment installation to grid connection and delivery in just 60 days,' said Vincent Wu, Global Sales Vice President and MEA MU Head at Trinasolar.
