Kelantan RTD seizes 13 luxury cars over fake registration plates

KOTA BARU: Thirteen luxury vehicles worth more than RM4.5 million have been seized by the state Road Transport Department (RTD) after their owners were found using fake registration plates to avoid detection by the authorities. State RTD director Mohd Misuari Abdullah said the vehicle owners also used fake registration plates to evade paying road tax. He said the offences were detected during Op Khas Luxury, a special operation that began on July 1. Between the operation's launch and today, enforcement teams have taken action against 15 luxury vehicles, resulting in the seizure of 13 for further investigation. "In this operation, we detected luxury car owners, who used fake registration numbers to mislead the authorities and hide other offences they had committed. "We also found cases involving foreign nationals driving luxury vehicles without a valid driving licence," he told reporters here today. Misuari said the seized vehicles, with a combined value of more than RM4.5 million, violated several regulations. He said these included driving without a valid licence, having an expired licence, or having no motor vehicle licence at all. He added that among the seized vehicles were a Toyota Vellfire 2.5 (A), Toyota Alphard, BMW 523i, Ford Mustang Fastback and Mercedes-Benz E250 CGI. On another matter, he said the state RTD logged nearly 30,000 cases of motorists committing road transport offences. The offences recorded from January to July comprised 10,233 cases of driving without licences, 8,432 cases of having no insurance coverage and 11,004 cases of driving without a valid licence. Op Khas Luxury is being held to ensure that only legal, safe and registered vehicles are allowed on the roads.

10 luxury cars seized after owners 'forgot' to renew road tax, insurance

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department (RTD) has seized 10 luxury vehicles, including a Porsche Taycan, Toyota Alphard, and Mini Cooper, in operations carried out between January and August this year in the state, reports said. Its director, Hanif Yusabra Yusof, was quoted by Kosmo as saying that the vehicles, worth hundreds of thousands to millions of ringgit, were confiscated after their owners were found driving without valid road tax and insurance, in some cases for up to two years. "Some owners claimed they 'forgot', but this excuse is unacceptable as it involves both safety and compliance with the law," he said. Hanif said two of the owners were businessmen in their 30s. The department, he stressed, views the matter seriously as driving without insurance poses a significant risk to public safety. "If these vehicles are involved in an accident, it will burden others who may face difficulties in obtaining compensation or covering repair costs," he said. From January to July this year, the Negri Sembilan RTD recorded 10,435 cases involving expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) and 7,891 cases of vehicles without insurance, all of which resulted in seizures. Hanif said the main offences leading to such action were under Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, Section 26(1) (driving without a valid competent or probationary driving licence) and Section 91 (driving without valid motor insurance). He urged all vehicle owners and drivers to take responsibility by ensuring their documents and licences are valid and up to date.

‘I forgot' is not an excuse

Not going anywhere: Hanif checking one of the luxury cars that was seized by the department at the JPJ depot in Seremban. SEREMBAN: The common excuse 'saya lupa' (I forgot) will not save you if you're caught driving without a valid road tax and insurance. Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said officers would seize such vehicles immediately and store them at the department's depot until the owner is brought to court and settles all dues. 'This is a serious offence. In the first seven months of this year, we issued 10,435 summonses to vehicle owners, including motorcyclists, in the state for not having valid road tax. 'Another 7,812 summonses were issued to those without insurance cover, and this is unacceptable,' he told reporters at the state JPJ office yesterday. Hanif said what was more shocking was that owners of luxury vehicles costing hundreds of thousands of ringgit were also among those who failed to renew their road tax and insurance. Ten high-end vehicles, including a Porsche Taycan, an Audi, a Tesla, a Mini Countryman and a Toyota Alphard, were seized this year when owners could not produce the necessary documents, he said. 'Some hadn't paid for over two years. 'When we ask why, they just say 'lupa lah' (I forgot). That is a lame excuse we will not accept,' he added. Hanif said offenders could be charged under Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for not having a valid road tax and under Section 90(1) for not having insurance coverage. He reminded vehicle owners to act responsibly and not take the matter lightly. 'Imagine getting into an accident without a valid road tax or insurance. Not only will you face legal consequences, but the other party may have difficulty claiming compensation,' he said. Hanif said such cases had been reported in the past and had caused serious problems for all parties involved. He said JPJ would continue enforcement operations to ensure compliance at all times.
