Blue Tigers take on Thailand in dress rehearsal for Hong Kong qualifier
Pathum Thani [Thailand], June 3 (ANI): The Indian men's national football team will take on Thailand in a FIFA International Friendly on Wednesday, at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
The kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM IST. For the Blue Tigers, ranked 127th, the match serves as valuable preparation for the all-important Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers Final Round match against Hong Kong to be held on June 10 in Kowloon City, as per a press release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
After the friendly, the Indian contingent will fly from Bangkok to Hong Kong on June 5.
Thailand, ranked 99th and also competing in the Asian Cup Qualifiers, is using the friendly to gear up for their match against Turkmenistan.
In the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, India head coach Manolo Marquez said, 'We are preparing for the game against Hong Kong, and Thailand are preparing for Turkmenistan. It is a good friendly game for both teams because we are in a similar situation (playing the Asian Cup Qualifiers).'
Lallianzuala Chhangte, accompanying Marquez in the press conference, said, 'We have been working really hard for these two matches. We take this friendly game seriously and want to win it as well. Everyone is focused and motivated. The coaching staff and everyone in the team are behind us, helping us in every way they can.'
'Thailand, we know, are a good team offensively and defensively. We came here with a clear plan. Our focus is on ourselves, and hopefully, we can execute what we have been working on. If we win this game, it will boost our confidence for the Hong Kong match,' Chhangte added.
This will be the first meeting between the two sides since 2019. India won both the previous clashes -- a 4-1 rout at the AFC Asian Cup 2019 in Abu Dhabi before a 1-0 victory in Buriram handed the Blue Tigers the bronze medal at the King's Cup later that year.
Marquez affirmed that the current context is completely different from six years ago. The Spaniard said, 'Those games were a long time ago. It was not last week or last month. I think both teams have changed players since then. I spoke with the players who played that game. It is practically impossible to compare the games. I expect a good game. We are here to win, and obviously, if you ask me if we can repeat the score, that would be great.'
Only seven players from India's 2019 Asian Cup squad have travelled to Thailand for the friendly (Sunil Chhetri, Amrinder Singh, Vishal Kaith, Sandesh Jhingan, Subhasish Bose, Ashique Kuruniyan and Udanta Singh Kumam). Thailand, meanwhile, have only two such players (captain Chanathip Songkrasin and forward Supachai Chaided).
Thailand head coach Masatada Ishii spoke along Marquez's lines. The Japanese said, 'We lost the last two games against India, but there have been a lot of changes. I was not the coach at that time, and a lot of players were different. So, it does not matter. We want to win against India and use this game as preparation for Turkmenistan.'
The Changsuek camp convened only on Monday after the end of the Thai domestic season last Saturday, as Buriram United FC won the Thai League Cup title, defeating Lamphun Warriors FC 2-0 in Pathum Thani itself.
Buriram have two players in the Thai squad, including Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul, who was present at the pre-match press conference. The midfielder said, 'I have joined the national camp after more than a year. The atmosphere in the camp is good and friendly. We want to do our best and aim to win the two matches.'
Marquez and his coaching staff were in attendance at the BG Stadium to watch the Thai League Cup final. He shared his thoughts on the matchday atmosphere in Thailand and expected a good crowd for the friendly at the Thammasat Stadium.
'Every player wants to play in front of a good crowd. The atmosphere was very nice at the Buriram-Lamphun final, with practically a full stadium. I think that is one reason why we play football -- with a lot of crowd,' concluded the Indian coach. (ANI)

London's clean air gains should inspire bold global action, says Mayor Sadiq Khan
New Delhi, Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is on a mission to make London net zero by 2030, has called on global leaders to draw inspiration from the city's efforts to improve air quality and said that he hopes that its clean air initiatives will encourage bold action on environmental challenges worldwide. Replying to a questionnaire sent to him by PTI, Khan underlined the importance of shared responsibility between governments, businesses and communities to achieve climate goals. London declared a climate emergency in 2018, following a motion passed by its assembly. The city has since taken several steps to combat the impacts of climate change, including establishing a large clean air zone, he said. "I am committed to making London net zero by 2030 and have implemented an array of climate policies and initiatives to help get us there. However, reaching net zero needs to be a collective effort, and that is why I am working closely with the government, alongside local councils, businesses, and London's communities," Khan told PTI. He said he also hopes that the results achieved in London will inspire leaders both in the UK and around the world to be bold in addressing environmental challenges in their cities, and to take strong action to improve air quality to protect their citizens and the environment. While London aims to be net zero by 2030, the UK hopes to cut greenhouse emissions to zero by 2050. According to the City Hall's 2021 Energy Monitoring Report, referable developments in London achieved carbon reductions 46.2 per cent higher than those required by national legal standards for new buildings. The Mayor's Energy Efficiency Fund, launched in 2018, has mobilised over 330 million pounds for net-zero projects. These include retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure and developing local heat networks to decarbonise energy use. London's policies have been highlighted internationally, including through platforms such as the C40 Cities a global network of mayors working to confront the climate crisis. Kane Williamson identifies the 'Next Fab 4' of world cricket after him, Kohli, Smith, Root; two Indians get the honour
This is an interesting time in world cricket. The superstars of the last decade and a half are fading. Virat Kohli has retired from Tests and T20Is, Steve Smith from ODIs, Joe Root no longer plays T20Is, and Kane Williamson has yet to play a T20I since New Zealand's loss to PNG at last year's T20 World Cup. Basically, we are nearing the end of an era, where not too long from now, the Fabled Fab Four of world cricket will no longer exist. All are in their mid-30s, and with the next generation of cricketers set to take over, Smith, Williamson, Kohli, and Root have only a few more years left to offer. Which brings us to the question: Who after Kohli, Williamson, Root and Smith? Surely, there's got to be an answer. Has world cricket found its next Fab Four? Well, if Williamson is to be believed, yes. In fact, the former New Zealand captain identified four promising youngsters who can replace him and his compatriots in a few years' time. And surprise, surprise… two Indians make his list. "The players that come to mind in terms of multi-format are Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rachin Ravindra and Harry Brook," Williamson said while speaking to ESPNcricinfo, while adding a fifth member. "And also, Cameron Green. Those are all outstanding players and have shown fantastic moments in all formats. All young, and their games are just growing." The Fab Four is a rather interesting concept. For the longest time, it was only confined to the Indian cricket team as Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid dominated the Test scene with their prolific run-scoring. Then, a fifth member was added when Virender Sehwag – India's greatest Test opener after Sunil Gavaskar – joined the party. However, post their retirements, from early 2012, Kohli, Smith, Williamson and Root became the next Fab Four across teams, as the four most-powerful batters of their respective teams single-handedly established their legacies across 15-odd years. And this was when Australia had David Warner, India boasted Rohit Sharma, New Zealand featured Tom Latham, and England starred the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan. And yet, the four that made more waves than anyone else were Kohli, Williamson, Root and Smith. Williamson isn't the first to shortlist the future Fab Four. Earlier this year, in January, former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton quizzed each other over the same topic, and interestingly, Jaiswal, Brook, and Rachin made it there too. Hussain's picks were Jaiswal, Brook, Australia's Travis Head and Saim Ayub of Pakistan, whereas Atherton went ahead with Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis and Rachin, in place of Head and Ayub. Jaiswal has already enjoyed a fabulous start to his Test career, including a century on debut and a record-breaking 700-plus-run series against England at home. Last year, when most of the batters struggled in Australia, the young left-handed opener emerged as one of the few bright spots for India Down Under. He scored a century in the only Test India won – at Perth – and eventually finished the series with 391 runs at an average of 43.44.

'He will face American justice': Indian-origin FBI chief Kash Patel announces extradition of Pakistani man; accused of ISIS terror plot
FBI director Kash Patel (PTI file photo) FBI director Kash Patel , an Indian-origin official leading the agency, announced Tuesday the extradition of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada to the United States on terrorism charges. Khan is accused of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York. 'Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism,' Patel wrote on X. According to the FBI, Khan allegedly planned to travel from Canada to New York and carry out a mass shooting on October 7, 2024 — the anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel — in support of ISIS. He was arrested by Canadian authorities on September 4, 2024, before the attack could be executed. 'Thankfully, the great work of FBI teams and our partners exposed those plans and shut them down,' Patel said. 'He has now arrived in the U.S. and will face American justice.' Calling it a reminder of the 'constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world,' Patel also highlighted the 'disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities.' He credited multiple FBI field offices, including in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, for their role in the operation. Though the announcement came from Indian-origin Patel, many in India have long remained skeptic on the United States for allegedly providing safe haven to Pakistan-backed terrorists. However, under the Trump administration, Washington's stance appears to be shifting. Just after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the White House, President Donald Trump approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to India. Rana was handed over in April to face trial for his role in the attacks. Still, another central figure in the case, David Headley, remains imprisoned in the United States. President Trump also strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of at least 26 people. Expressing solidarity, he said, 'PM Modi and the incredible people of India have our full support and deepest sympathies.'
