Drones deployed to nab bikers misusing Federal Highway
Petaling Jaya Police Chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said that the drone support for the operation, which began at 11am, was provided by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters (IPD) in cooperation with the Bukit Aman Air Operations Force (PGU).
'In just half an hour of this operation, we've issued 32 summonses, including those we stopped directly and those recorded via drone footage, which will be followed up with traffic reports to compile a complete report.
'Even though these offenders think they've escaped today, drones have actually captured their registration numbers and summonses will be sent to them under POL 170A for further action,' he said at a press conference on the operation.
The operation was also joined by Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Edward Kondokor.
Commenting on the behaviour of certain motorcyclists who act like 'road thugs', Shahrulnizam said riders must control their emotions and be aware of the offences they commit when travelling on the major Klang Valley artery as they are not using the designated motorcycle lane.
'If they use the highway, they also face a higher risk of injury due to accidents, so today's motorcycle operation aims to minimise accident cases.
'This targeted operation focuses on enforcement against motorcycle users, given that 70 percent of road fatalities involve motorcyclists,' he said.
He added that the number of accidents involving motorcyclists on the Federal Highway under the jurisdiction of the Petaling Jaya police has increased, with 204 cases recorded this year – an increase of 35.1 percent or 53 cases compared to 151 cases last year.
'For this district, 52 deaths were recorded last year, while this year, 34 deaths have already been recorded as of May.
'So we've taken this initiative so that road users, especially motorcyclists, realise it is both an offence and a danger to use the highway when a dedicated motorcycle lane has already been provided,' he said.
He also advised highway concession companies to ensure that motorcycle lanes are safe for riders in terms of lighting and road conditions to prevent any unwanted incidents.

Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit said that in the first case, on Aug 2, police were alerted at around 11.15 pm to an attempted robbery using a long machete at a 24-hour mini market on Jalan Tun Sri Lanang. 'Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters (IPD) arrested a 47-year-old man not far from the scene. Christopher said the suspect, who had been released from prison last February, admitted committing the act, claiming he had not eaten for two days. In the second case, Christopher said a 20-year-old man has been detained to assist in the investigation of a roadside robbery in Pantai Puteri, Tanjung Kling, on July 29. He said police were alerted around 3.50 am to a robbery involving a man and his girlfriend. Acting on intelligence, Christopher added that police arrested the suspect on Aug 5 at about 12.30am and seized a motorcycle with a fake registration number, along with a helmet and a mobile phone.

Man nabbed in connection with fatal Miri hit-and-run

Police record 14 statements over break-in at Lim Guan Eng trial witness's home
PETALING JAYA: Police have recorded statements from 14 people to assist in the investigation into the break-in at the home of a key prosecution witness in the corruption trial involving former finance minister Lim Guan Eng, on Jalan Bukit Gasing. Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said that so far, 14 statements have been taken to aid the investigation. He added that the police are also tracking down several other witnesses believed to be able to assist in the case. "Investigations are still ongoing to identify the suspects involved in the incident," he said when contacted today. It was previously reported that the suspects, armed with parangs, escaped with stolen items estimated to be worth RM300,000. The victim suffered injuries to the mouth and wrist, while two of his security guards were tied up by the assailants, who also warned them: "Don't be a hero. Stay home and keep quiet." Last Wednesday, police confirmed that the robbery was not linked to the victim's role as a key witness in the ongoing corruption trial. Lim, who is also the DAP national chairman, is facing multiple corruption charges in the Sessions Court related to the Penang Undersea Tunnel Project.
