MIRI (Aug 9): Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident on Aug 7 along Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling here. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect was detained the next day at 5.17pm by Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division personnel, with one vehicle also seized. 'The arrest was made possible following public information regarding the suspect's involvement in the incident,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Farhan added the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years, upon conviction. He reminded road users to always practise courteous driving and comply with traffic regulations to avoid endangering other road users. The hit-and-run claimed the life of a 33-year-old male pedestrian who was headed back to Krokop with a co-worker around 2am after a round of drinks in the Permyjaya area. Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak said the offer will be available at all district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) counters statewide from Aug 26 to 28, between 8am and 5pm. 'This initiative is part of our efforts to encourage the public to clear their outstanding summonses while promoting better road safety awareness,' he said in a statement yesterday. However, he stressed that the discount will not apply to certain categories of offences, including those involving fatalities, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and cases still under court mention. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, dubbed Op Pelbagai, saw 509 vehicles and 571 individuals checked from July 28 to Aug 3. The operation was conducted by the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, involving a senior officer and 13 personnel. 'This operation specifically focused on fancy licence plates as well as licence plates that do not comply with regulations under the law. 'Off the 330 summonses issued, 48 were for fancy licence plates, 47 for non-regulation licence plates, and 235 for other offences,' he said in a statement today. He said the use of fancy licence plates on vehicles is an offence under Section 14(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of between RM300 and RM3,000. At the same time, Mohd Farhan reminded all road users to ensure their vehicles have valid road tax and insurance, as well as regulation licence plates, and to always comply with traffic laws. 'Continuous monitoring and enforcement will be carried out to ensure road safety and curb irresponsible behaviour on the road,' he added. KULAI: A 30-year-old man was killed in a crash after his car collided with another vehicle that was turning right into a junction. Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the incident occurred at around 7.30pm at KM57 of Jalan Johor Baru–Air Hitam (southbound) on Wednesday (July 30). "The crash is believed to have happened when the victim's car was heading straight from Simpang Renggam towards Kulai. "Upon reaching the location, the victim then crashed into a four-wheel vehicle that was being driven by a man who was making a right turn into a junction," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 31). The victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries. 'Meanwhile, the 60-year-old driver of the other vehicle sustained only minor scratches on his head and hand. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,' he said. 13 motorcycles seized, 57 summonses issued in Miri's 'Op Samseng Jalanan'

MIRI (July 27): A total of 13 motorcycles were seized and 57 summonses issued during 'Op Samseng Jalanan' conducted at various locations here last night. Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, carried out by Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters, took place at Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Marina Utama, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Tanjong Lobang, Jalan Tudan, Jalan Permyjaya, Jalan Taman Tunku, and Jalan Canada Hill, from 10pm on July 26 until 3am on July 27. 'During the operation, 13 vehicles were inspected, and all of the motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 after being found modified from their original structure and for further inspection,' he said in a statement. He added that 13 individuals were also inspected and 57 PDRM (K) 257 summonses were issued for various traffic offences. Mohd Farhan said that similar operations will be carried out from time to time to ensure road users comply with traffic laws and regulations. He urged road users, especially motorcyclists, to ride responsibly and cautiously, avoid illegal vehicle modifications, and refrain from roadside gathering which can lead to congestion and noise disturbances.
