The new academic year kicked off with vibrant Praveshanolsavam (school reopening celebrations) across the district on Monday. Over 25,000 children were welcomed into Class 1. Revenue Minister K. Rajan officially launched the district-level Praveshanolsavam celebrations at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School (GVHSS) Puthur.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said State's public education system is witnessing a new and promising transformation. 'The impact of the Public Education Protection Campaign is visible in every school, where education now goes beyond textbooks to touch lives,' he noted. He stressed that education must reflect the emotions and needs of the people and not just focus on marks or exams, but on building a well-informed, compassionate society.
The Minister also spoke about ₹15-crore development works carried out at the school over the past nine years, highlighting infrastructure improvements. He said a colourful rally will be held from the school to the upcoming Puthur Zoological Park, set to open after the Onam holidays, as a symbol of community engagement with education and nature.
The ceremony featured a live screening of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's State-level Praveshanolsavam inauguration. Students performed the official welcome song through dance. Meritorious students who received LSS, USS, and NMMS scholarships, along with Thrissur native Triloknath, who featured in the International World Book of Records, and high school Mathematics teacher A.S. Saritha, who earned her PhD from Calicut University, were honoured during the function.
Students took the 'Clean Kerala' pledge, and the district sanitation poster was released as part of the Haritha Mission. Children's cultural performances added colour and joy to the event.

Work on NH 66 to be completed as per schedule, Centre assures State

The construction on the National Highway 66 would be completed in December 2025 itself as per schedule, assured Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The assurance was given to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during a meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also sought to exempt the money spent by Kerala for the land acquisition of highway projects in the State from the borrowing limit of Kerala. However, no assurance was given to the State in this regard, as the Union Minister made it clear that the issue was not within his limits, and an intervention of the Prime Minister was necessary for such demands. Mr. Vijayan said in a social media post that the meeting with the Union Minister was productive. The meeting also reviewed the progress of ongoing National Highway projects in Kerala, he said while thanking his continued support. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Public Works Department Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas said the work on the NH stretch from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram would be completed in December 2025, and the new NH would be a New Year gift for the Keralites. The assurance for constructing a 360-metre viaduct to replace the collapsed stretch of NH 66 at Kooriyad, near Tirurangadi, in Malappuram was received in the meeting. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already suspended the staff responsible for the collapse of the road, and the contractor company was prevented from undertaking further activities in the stretch. The expense for constructing the collapsed stretch Kooriyad would be levied from the contractor company. The issues that cropped up in connection with the construction of NH in other parts of the State were also brought to the attention of the Union Minister, and he assured necessary interventions to prevent the recurrence of any such issues in the future, said Mr. Riyas. Out of the 20 projects put forth by the State seeking the approval of the Centre, 14 projects received assurance from the Centre. The projects that received central nods include the Thiruvananthapuram Outer Ring Road project, for which the order will be issued in July, and the Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway, the approval for which will be issued by the end of July. The Minister also said that the order for starting the work on the Kollam-Shenkottai Greenfield project will be issued by September. The soil and sludge collected from the water bodies will be used for road construction, but only after ensuring the quality of the material for road construction. The Irrigation and Inland Navigation departments and the NHAI will ensure the quality of the material. The Minister also said that it would be decided later whether there would be restrictions on small vehicles, including bikes and autorickshaws, on NH 66.

Pakistan espionage case: What YouTuber Jasbir Singh's lawyer said in his defence

After YouTuber Jasbir Singh was arrested on charges of espionage, his lawyer, Madhav Shukla, questioned the credibility of the police investigation and said that the case lacked concrete evidence. Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, advocate Shukla said that the case against his client was based solely on unsubstantiated claims of links to Pakistan's spy agency, the ISI. "Jasbir Singh was arrested yesterday, and the court sent him to a 3-day Police remand. On June 7, he will be produced in court again. As per the police FIR, there are 3 allegations against him. One is that he gets foreign funding, the second is that he has links with the ISI, and the third is that he has sensitive data with him. He used to appear before the State Special Operations Cell as a responsible citizen whenever he was summoned. If he had any malicious intentions, he would have avoided it," said Shukla. "Police have not come up on record with anything like who he was in touch with, his mode of communication and his mode of money transfer. They just have a simple allegation that he has a connection with ISI," he further asked. Jasbir Singh, a Punjab-based YouTuber, was allegedly in close contact with influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is already in custody on charges of spying for Pakistan, PTI reported, citing officials. Singh was arrested on Tuesday after police unearthed a 'terror-backed espionage network' linked to him. He had allegedly travelled to Pakistan three times, officials said.
