Break-ins could close our circus down, says owner
Since arriving at Pelsall Common, near Walsall, last week, Circus Cortex has twice been targeted by thieves, who damaged the tent and stole three motorbikes worth between £15,000 and £20,000.
Irina Archer said the business had already been struggling to draw its usual crowds this year.
"This is our livelihood," she said. "Literally, this could be make or break."
Circus Cortex, which has been touring the country for five seasons, began its visit to Pelsall on 1 May and had been due to perform until Sunday, before moving to Bakewell, Nottingham, Kingswinford and Leicester.
Last week, thieves slashed the big top in three places, causing about £2,000 worth of damage, and broke into the box office, where they stole about £200.
On Thursday night, three motorbikes which were part of the Globe of Death performance - which Ms Archer described as "a highlight of the show" - were taken, along with safety equipment like helmets.
"It's obviously going to be a shorter performance, and not as exciting for the public unfortunately - but what can we do?" asked Ms Archer. "For us to perform, we need the bikes.
"But I'm not in a position to fork another £20,000 out."
The bikes - and their riders - had been specially imported from Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia.
Ms Archer said the circus was already "on its knees" because the cost of living crisis meant people were staying away.
She explained: "We were thinking we would have to shut down in a week or two if the business doesn't improve because it's the first time in five years we're actually struggling to tick over.
"And then this [the thefts] are putting an extra strain on it.
"We've got 25 employees here who are dependent on the performance and a lot of their families depend on them sending money home, because I still have quite a few Ukrainians here on the Ukraine scheme."
Ms Archer has reported the thefts to West Midlands Police.
The force has been contacted for comment.

See which police area in the Black Country has one cop per 1,000 people
Dudley is bottom of the Black Country league for police numbers with just one officer for around every 1,000 residents. Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the Local Democracy Reporting Service shows there were 326 officers assigned to the Dudley policing area in 2025. Out of the West Midlands Police force areas only Solihull has fewer officers with 255 while Birmingham is the highest at 1,902. Superintendent Gill Davenport, from Dudley Local Policing Area (LPA), said: "We have a wide range of teams who work tirelessly to ensure the borough is a safe place to live, work and visit. "We currently have more than 375 police officers and staff who are based in various roles across Dudley; while we can also call on the support of a number of forcewide departments, such as the traffic and dogs units. "As part of our local policing approach we carry out both targeted operations, and routine patrols, across all parts of the borough to address issues which matter to our communities." Government figures show in September 2024 there were 7,995 full-time equivalent officers in West Midlands Police which is not enough according to the police trade union, The West Midlands Police Federation. In January 2025, The federation's secretary, Tim Rogers, said: "The Police Uplift Programme which was launched by the previous Conservative Government saw 20,000 police officers recruited nationwide in the three years up until the end of March 2023. "Of course, forces welcomed the influx of new recruits to boost officer numbers which had fallen so low that many forces were struggling to provide effective policing services for the communities they serve. Man charged with murder after woman's body found
A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead at an industrial estate in Smethwick. Shara Miller, aged 41, was found off Woodburn Road just after 06:10 BST on Monday and confirmed dead at the scene. Police said a forensic post mortem had revealed that she died as a result of strangulation. West Midlands Police said Tanveer Singh, 31, from West Bromwich, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with Ms Miller's murder on Wednesday evening. He has been remanded to appear before Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on Thursday. Two other men have been released with no further action. The force said they believed Ms Miller had been killed in the early hours of the morning at the location where her body was discovered. West Midlands Police is continuing to ask the public for any information surrounding her movements before 01:00 BST. Det Ch Insp Alastair Orencas said: "This charge is a significant development in our investigation which remains very much ongoing. "Our focus is on getting justice for Shara and her loved ones, and it's important that anyone with information which could help us comes forward. "We've been carrying out enquiries in and around Soho Road, Birmingham, where it's understood she was involved in sex work, and we really want to hear from anyone who may have seen Shara on Sunday evening or early Monday morning."
