Future-ready cities built on 3 pillars - culture, community, sustainability [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Future-ready cities are those that blend modernisation with heritage and identity, said urban experts.
Chartered architect and urban strategist Lim Take Bane said successful developments were built upon three pillars — culture, community and sustainability.
"Future-ready cities are inclusive, connected and designed with heart, where it is not just a technical exercise; it's about creating spaces that work for people," said Lim.
Speaking on NST's Beyond The Headlines podcast, Lim said at the heart of urban planning was "planning for people".
"A truly great city is one that is walkable, child-friendly, economically diverse and full of character," he said.
Lim pointed to Kuala Lumpur's recognition as among Southeast Asia's most liveable cities — ahead of Bangkok and Jakarta — as evidence that Malaysia was on the right track.
The federal capital's well-balanced integration of transport systems, green spaces, digital infrastructure and urban connectivity were signs of its liveability.
He said neighbourhoods like Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar were examples of transit-oriented development, where schools, offices, commercial centres and public transport were all within walking distance.
"In these areas, you don't need a car. You can connect to the LRT, cycle or walk. The street design itself fosters a healthier, more connected lifestyle," he said.
Vibrant cities, he said, were built around human experience, local stories and a strong sense of place, were the foundation of growth.
Lim pointed to towns in Perak as an example of vibrant urban centres.
He said these towns emerged from the tin mining boom and had blossomed with distinct cultural identities.
"We were once the world's largest exporter of tin. Towns like Gopeng and Bidor grew as weigh stations along the old trunk road.
"Today, places like Bidor are famous for biscuits, Kajang for satay, and Ampang for yong tau foo. Malaysians love their food, and they will travel for it," Lim noted.
This deep attachment to local places, he said, should be a driving force in urban planning.
Selangor, he said, was another example of a thriving state which retained livability and economic prosperity.
"We don't have a problem in Selangor of people leaving to find better opportunities outside, unlike in Johor, where people migrate from the state's north to the south for better jobs," he said.
He said successful cities were those which had an "instant narrative of where your town had come from".
"Use that history to build your city's future. Ultimately, a city that works is a city with a soul," he added.
Economist Professor Dr Barjoyai Bardai, who was also on the podcast, said Malaysia's push for modernisation must retain the charm and potential of smaller towns.
"We should avoid losing what already works.
"Places like Meru, Jenjarom and Kapar may be seen as small towns, but they hold significant cultural and economic potential with the right improvements," he said.

Econpile set for new job wins on Penang LRT catalyst

File: Artist impression of Penang LRT Mutiara Line. PETALING JAYA: Econpile Holdings Bhd , which has secured its first contract for the Penang light rail transit (LRT) Mutiara Line, is poised to win more jobs as the RM10bil project gains momentum, analysts say. On June 5, Econpile announced it was awarded a RM42.8mil bored piling sub-package spanning three stations – from East Jelutong to Gelugor – out of the total 21 stations. The works are scheduled to begin on Aug 1, 2025 and end on Oct 31, 2027. CGS International (CGSI) Research said the win validated its view that the Penang LRT is progressing as planned, with full-scale construction expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025 (4Q25). 'For the broader construction sector, we think this win validates our thesis that the Penang LRT Mutiara Line is progressing as planned and construction works should be in full swing in 4Q25. 'This is likely to benefit Gamuda Bhd , as we expect it to be contracted for more work for the Penang LRT, amounting to an additional RM3bil on top of its initial contract value of RM5bil,' it said. Other potential beneficiaries include Malayan Cement Bhd , HSS Engineers Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd and Sunway Construction Group Bhd . CGSI Research said Econpile's year-to-date new order wins now total RM333mil, with an order book of RM487mil as at June 2025. The group is aiming for RM400mil to RM450mil in new jobs for its financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY25), in line with last year's performance. 'We expect gross profit margins for the Penang LRT bored piling contract to be about 10%-15%, higher than the recent piling projects for property development it won over the past one year,' it said, adding that Econpile's performance should improve in 4Q25. CGSI Research maintained its 'add' rating and 46 sen target price, citing Econpile's strong presence in infrastructure projects and the largest fleet of bored piles in Malaysia. Meanwhile, CIMB Securities Research said the sub-package forms part of the larger package for which the Gamuda-led SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd – comprising Gamuda (60%), Ideal Property Development Sdn Bhd (20%) and Loh Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd (20%) – is the principal civil works contractor. Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd is the project developer and asset owner of the Mutiara Line. 'Having secured the first major piling contract under the Penang LRT Mutiara line, the group is well-placed to bid for a larger piling-related job that is coming up,' CIMB Research said. It kept its 'buy' rating and 38 sen target price, pegging the stock at 19 times 2026 core earnings per share of 1.9 sen.

Proton e.MAS 7 becomes Malaysia's fastest-selling EV, 3,632 units sold as at May 31

PETALING JAYA: As the Proton brand marks its first anniversary, Proton Holdings Bhd subsidiary Pro-Net reported that 7 continues to be the No. 1 electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia, with 3,632 units sold as at May 31 – comprising 3,399 units locally and 233 exported. Achieving this milestone within just five months since deliveries began in January, the 7 has come Malaysia's fastest-selling EV. This achievement comes just one year after the launch of the Proton brand. Unveiled in June 12, 2024, the brand introduced its flagship model, the 7, on Dec 16, 2024, which has since emerged as a frontrunner in Malaysia's fast-evolving EV segment. Despite pricing pressures across the EV market, the 7 continues to perform strongly, signalling a clear reflection of the trust Malaysians place in the Proton brand and its commitment to quality. 'This strong show of support from Malaysians is incredibly encouraging. It validates our strategy, strengthens belief in the Proton brand, and reaffirms the value of investing in home-grown innovation,' said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang. 'The 7's success is a strong indicator of where the market is heading and we're proud to be leading that charge.' More than just selling cars, Pro-Net is also actively expanding the ecosystem that removes barriers to everyday EV adoption and a better ownership experience. In just one year, Proton has included more than 2,500 public charging points in the Integrated Live Charging Map inside the 7 and in the app, offering a coverage of over 90% nationwide. To support EV customers nationwide, 44 Proton dealerships have been appointed, with 32 already operational. The brand has also expanded its after-sales footprint with six more 3S centres opening soon, adding to the 24 3S centres that have been servicing customers. 'We are deeply grateful to all Malaysians who have supported Proton from the very beginning,' said Zhang. 'Your enthusiasm, trust, and belief in our vision have made this journey possible. As we look ahead, we remain committed to making electric mobility more accessible, more reliable, and more Malaysian than ever. The future is electric, and it's proudly ours to build together.' As part of the Proton First Anniversary celebration, the Peace of Mind Campaign offers existing owners a complimentary 32-point vehicle inspection, covering key areas such as brake pads, battery, electronic systems, lighting, tires, wipers and air conditioning. The campaign also includes a free software inspection. Thie initiative runs from June 1, to July 1.

Govt delays e-invoice system after feedback from MSMEs

GEORGE TOWN: The government has postponed the implementation of the e-invoice system after weighing the concerns of business owners, particularly the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), said Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying. She said with this postponement, the government hopes companies will have more time to adapt to the e-invoice system developed by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN). On June 5, LHDN said in a statement that taxpayers with income or annual sales below RM500,000 would be exempted from the e-invoice system for now. It was postponed to Jan 1, 2026 for those earning between RM1 million and RM5 million, while those with income up to RM1 million will begin on July 1, 2026. "What we initially planned (was to implement the system) effective July 1 (2025) for companies with annual sales of RM500,000 and above. However, we understand their concerns, especially the MSMEs, and have revised it into three additional phases. "The Madani government has taken note of the concerns of our business community," she told reporters after officiating at the launch of Lebuh Cecil Public Market's smart toilets here today. Lim also said the third phase of the e-invoice implementation, beginning this July 1, will involve taxpayers with income or annual sales exceeding RM5 million up to RM25 million. On the stamping of employment contracts between employers and employees starting Jan 1, 2026, she said LHDN had not enforced this requirement previously. "Therefore, LHDN and the Finance Ministry have considered this and decided that employment contracts before Jan 1, 2025, will be exempted, but contracts starting on Jan 1, 2026, will be required to pay stamp duty," she said. She hopes companies will comply with all provisions under the Stamp Act 1949, particularly those related to stamping requirements. — BERNAMA
