'It feels like a betrayal'

BBC News13-05-2025

Lifelong Liverpool fan Carl Duffy, 41, was at Sunday's game with his daughter in the main stand, and said both of them booed Trent Alexander-Arnold's introduction."The reason we booed comes down to a number of things, some of which in isolation would make this scenario different but combined it was always going to lead to this," Duffy explained."Trent claims to be a local lad whose dreams came true, always talking about watching the 2005 Champions League trophy coming home from his house on Queens Drive. His idol was Steven Gerrard. Everything about him screamed 'he's just the same as us'."We identified with him, he was living our dream. To us it gets no bigger than Liverpool being on top and being part of that."In our minds nothing is bigger than Liverpool, that's how it is here. It feels like a betrayal, a backstab, like everything that was said before wasn't really true, or at least not as true as was portrayed."Richard Davis, 50, was at the game against Arsenal and also condoned the booing from some supporters."Alexander-Arnold is widely known as a local lad that is a Liverpool fan," he said. "I, and most fans, can't even begin to imagine how amazing it would be to be in his place so where's the respect to 'his' club?"If you genuinely love the club, and care, why would you run your contract down for the last year or so, to make sure that the club gets absolutely nothing to replace you after they have invested for the last 20 years in turning you into the superstar that you've become?"No-one begrudges any Liverpool player wanting to change their lives and go elsewhere if they want to, but go the right way. Go with respect and some class. Be honest and straight with the club, and don't play this 'will I, won't I?' game that he's been playing with them."I am a fan, and this does mean more. Alexander-Arnold would have been a legend of the club had he stayed. He would probably been in most fans' top 10 Liverpool players of all time - but I think that legacy has all gone now and he's really tarnished how he's left so badly."Read more on the debate around the reaction to Alexander-Arnold's exit

Wayne Carey opens up about his 'street fight' drama as he and Sam Newman blame 'activists' for barring them from footy event

AFL legend Wayne Carey has opened up about his recent scuffle outside a popular Melbourne pub, as he and Sam Newman lashed out after being blocked from speaking at a fundraising event. Carey, 54, was embroiled in a heated exchange outside the Albert Park Hotel on the night of June 5. The Kangaroos great and an unidentified man appeared to engage in a shouting match with a third man wearing a backpack. Carey was later seen grabbing the backpack-wearing man by the sleeve of his shirt while the other man implored Carey to 'relax'. Carey later said he had been harassed by the man with whom he became entangled. 'Unfortunately, there are antagonists who target you based on your experiences as a has-been footballer,' he said. 'This individual is a serial harasser - and he chose to repeat his behaviour through vile and obscene slurs, again, last night.' On Wednesday, Carey addressed the issue on the 'You Cannot Be Serious' podcast, explaining that the the man involved had since reached out to him. 'I have received an apology,' said Carey. 'This has happened a couple of times, the same person, the same person has since apologised to not only myself, but my partner Jess and other people that he involved that night.' The AFL icon didn't want to go into too much detail about the person involved, but suggested that he was seeking help. 'I'm not going to be a hypocrite and hang him out to dry, what I am going to say is he's put the first step forward, he's sent a message to myself and Jess apologising... and said he's got some stuff to deal with. 'And I appreciate more than ever someone who owns what has happened.' Carey also expressed his frustration at how the incident was reported, saying that it wasn't a 'late-night fracas' as some media reported. The incident comes after Carey and fellow footy great Sam Newman had their invitations to speak at a fundraising event rescinded. The pair were asked to speak at the Barwon Heads Football and Netball Club charity event on June 21 at the Barwon Heads Hotel. However, they were told not to show up, according to The Herald Sun. It is understood that committee members had not been happy with the appearance of the 'You Cannot Be Serious' podcast hosts attending the event. Newman addressed the issue on his podcast saying that he and Carey 'don't give a f**k' about the decision. 'It's the weak, feckless, insipid people who run those clubs who are controlled by some activists,' said Newman. Carey said he was happy with the decision because he had agreed to appear as a favour and he can now spend his time elsewhere. Elsewhere in the podcast, Newman brought up recent comments where he referred to the AFLW as a 'lesbian league', as reported by Daily Mail Australia. 'The Daily Mail, they're so good to us,' said Newman. 'They reprinted the entire conversation we had about the women's football league. 'And I said - throwaway line - "the lesbian league", and they said "disgraceful comment". Newman questioned why it was considered disgraceful, claiming it's just a fact that a lot of lesbians played footy.

Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him

Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. ‌ Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. ‌ Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. ‌ "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
