No gaps in defence preparedness, govt tells Parliament committee

Hindustan Times18-06-2025
NEW DELHI: There are no gaps in India's defence preparedness and efforts have been made to ramp up logistical provisions for the armed forces, a Parliamentary committee was informed on Tuesday, said people aware of the details. The committee was also informed about India's Indian Ocean Strategy and the efforts being made to secure the seas, in the wake of strategic challenges such as threats to maritime traffic, piracy and terrorism and China's growing footprint in the region said people quoted above.
Several lawmakers raised the issue of expatriation of Indians stuck in war-torn Iran.
At a meeting, of the standing committee on external affairs chaired by Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor that was attended by lawmakers and senior officials of the ministries of defence and external affairs, the government put forth that how India is prepared to secure its land, skies and seas.
According to a person privy to the details, while there was no discussion on Operation Sindoor, India's military response against terror camps in Pakistan, lawmakers sought to know details about the country's preparedness for war and attacks and whether adequate provisions have been made to provide arms and equipment for the armed forces.
'There were some questions on whether our allocation for the defence budget is adequate...whether we are prepared if Pakistan ups the ante. Government officials said we are ready and well equipped,' said the person, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Tharoor said the discussion was on an ongoing subject of India's Indian Ocean Strategy, which is a foreign policy subject that has important defence dimensions. 'We also had the Defence Secretary and the Navy present to brief us. The discussion was outstanding. We spent more than two and a half hours in serious conversation on various aspects, which you will see in the report submitted to Parliament...' he told ANI.
Tharoor, who recently led a delegation of lawmakers to USA, Panama, Brazil and Colombia as part of a diplomatic outreach on Operation Sindoor said "... All of this (Blue Water Navy) was discussed... The whole idea of the Blue Water Navy, our military capacity beyond that, everything was thoroughly discussed. Operation Sindoor was not discussed, but some of the elements that became apparent during that confrontation came up in conversations..."
On PM Modi's visit to Canada for the G7 Summit, Tharoor said, "The G7 are no longer the seven largest economies in the world because India and China are there and should be part of the G7 by that logic. But still, they're very influential countries. They have very good coordination amongst themselves. And for our Prime Minister to have an opportunity to talk to them, to have a role with them, to let his concerns be shared with them is always very important. There's nothing that we need to worry about. I'm sure that while the Prime Minister is there, very important conversations will take place, and we'll hear about them when the Foreign Secretary is back from the trip..."
Several lawmakers raised the issue of the Israel-Iran conflict and the impact it has on the Indians stranded in Iran. 'There was at least one MP who said India has not issued a statement on the conflict...'
AIMIM lawmaker Assadudin Owaisi is also learnt to have sought help for the return of 133 Hyderabad residents from Iraq. 'He said these people, mostly Shia Muslims are stranded because of air space restrictions and the Indian embassy in Kuwait should provide them e-Visas to be able to travel there and then get on to flights to India,' said a second person aware of the details.
On India's commitment to the well-being and progress of nations of the Indian Ocean, the lawmakers were informed that the objective was to promote greater prosperity in the region and making the Indian Ocean a free, open and inclusive space.

After Operation Sindoor, IAF Ramps Up Missile Arsenal With Over 200-km Range To Dominate Skies Fresh from the stunning success of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force is now set to supercharge its arsenal with long-range precision weapons capable of hitting targets over 200 km away. In Sindoor, IAF jets used BrahMos, SCALP, Rampage, and Crystal Maze missiles to smash enemy airbases from 250-450 km, staying safely beyond Chinese HQ-9 air defences. Now, DRDO is developing extended-range Astra missiles, while the IAF eyes Russia's deadly R-37 for unrivalled reach. Project Kusha long-range air defence is being fast-tracked, alongside plans for two more S-400 squadrons, systems that already forced Pakistani jets deep into their own skies. With Rafales, fifth-gen fighters, and a new missile doctrine, India is preparing to dominate future wars in the air, ensuring the next Sindoor will be even more decisive. 70 views | 2 hours ago

Vote theft through scientific means is dangerous to democracy in all States: Congress MP

'Vote theft' through scientific means by the Bharatiya Janata Party is dangerous to democracy in all States, said Virudhunagar MP B. Manickam Tagore. Addressing reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Tagore said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has exposed how one lakh votes were added in Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency before the 2024 Parliamentary election. 'This had led to the BJP winning the seat with a small margin of 30,000 votes,' he said. The BJP had claimed that it would win 400 seats in the Lok Sabha election, but ended up winning only 239 seats. Similar, 'vote theft' had been done in 48 other constituencies too, he said. Hence, the BJP Government should not be allowed to continue in power in the Centre, he said. When the opposition parties pointed to this irregularity and sought to discuss the issue, their demand was rejected in the Parliament. Three hundred MPs of the opposition parties marched towards the Election Commission office in Delhi. However, the Election Commission did not meet them to clarify, he said. The Congress MP said that it was anti-democratic exercise to conduct Assembly election in Bihar after deleting 18% of the votes of the opposition parties by way of Special Intensive Revision of voters list. In this backdrop, Mr. Rahul Gandhi has planned to take out 'Voters' Right' yatra in Bihar for 17 days from August 17. 'While the BJP partyman gets five votes in the election, it is only one for the common man. For the opposition parties, even that one vote is denied,' he said. Stating that such scientific way of stealing votes was dangerous in other States where BJP was in power, he said the Election Commission was hand in glove with the BJP in such an irregularity.

What is Pakistan Army's 'Rocket Force'? Asim Munir plans army reorganization after Op Sindoor defeat, tension for India due to...

(File) Pakistan Rocket Force: Pakistan is rapidly expanding its military capabilities post Operation Sindoor setback, and has now announced the establishing of a rocket force, a new military unit of the Pakistan Army, which will be created on the lines of China's People's Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF). As per details, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the announcement during the country's 78th Independence Day celebrations on Thursday, revealing Pakistan Rocket Force, officially named the Army Rocket Force Command (ARFC), will be established as a separate unit of the Pakistan Army. What is the Pakistan Rocket Force? According to media reports, the Army Rocket Force Command aka the Pakistan Rocket Force, will be deployed as a special unit of the Pakistan Army, and have the command of the country's conventional missile and rocket systems. The Pakistan Rocket Force will command ballistic, cruise and hypersonic weapons acquired from China under an integrated command structure, providing support to the Pakistan Army by taking charge of missile and rocket systems. Notably, Pakistan is rapidly stocking its weapons' arsenal at war footing, purchasing advanced weapons systems, including 40 J-35 stealth fighter aircraft, KJ-500 early warning aircraft and the HQ-19 anti-ballistic missile system, which is likely to be under the command of Pakistan's rocket force. Why Asim Munir is reorganizing Pakistan Army? As per military experts, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has stepped up the reorganization of the army after the crushing defeat it faced at India's hands during Operation Sindoor in May this year. Experts believe the formation of the Pakistan Rocket Force is a major step in that direction, aimed at achieving aggressive strategic interests. Strategists fear that Pakistan's new military unit could disturb the balance of power in the region, threaten regional security, and also trigger a new arms race in South Asia. How Pakistan Rocket Force is a concern for India? Military experts believe that Pakistan's rocket force is primarily aimed at gaining military superiority over India, particularly the missile prowess of Indian armed forces. A centralized command of long-range rocket and missile systems will give Pakistan the capability to attack India's air defense, airports and command centers. Several pro-Pakistan military experts have termed the rocket force as a 'game-changer', while Indian strategists have urged New Delhi to prepare countermeasures in wake of the new threat.
