Selangor proposes petanque, muaythai, silambam for Sukma 2026

THE Selangor State Government has officially proposed the inclusion of petanque, muaythai, and silambam in the upcoming Sukma 2026.
This was announced by a statement issued by Selangor state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi ( pic ), who is also chairman of the Sukma Selangor 2026 organising committee, on Friday (Aug 8).
'After examining all the applications, appeals and responses presented, the Selangor State Government Council chaired by the Mentri Besar today, it was decided that the Selangor Sukma secretariat submit a proposal for three additional sports to be contested in Sukma 2026.
'However, any decision regarding this proposal is subject to the agreement of all state representatives who are members of the Sukma Supreme Committee chaired by the Youth and Sports Ministry and must be finalised no later than August 15,' he said.
Najwan said this proposal shows Selangor's commitment to expanding participation and empowering various sports disciplines, starting from the grassroots level to the national level.
He also calls on all parties to stop any efforts to politicise sports by playing on narrow and ingrained racial sentiments.
'Sports are a field of unity that unites Malaysians across races, religions and political ideologies, and should be celebrated in a genuine and inclusive spirit of sportsmanship,' he said.
Selangor, he said, is determined and committed to ensuring that the organisation of the 22nd Sukma Selangor next year will run smoothly and achieve its main goal of producing more junior athletes, in line with the government's desire to win a gold medal at the highest international sports championship, which is the 2028 Olympic Games.

Paris-bound Tang Jie-Ee Wei aim to make waves on the Seine

KUALA LUMPUR: A year after their memorable run to the Olympic quarter-finals in Paris, Chen Tang Jie- Toh Ee Wei are back in the French capital — this time aiming for a medal on a road that promises far more than a stroll down the Seine. The world No. 4 have been handed a potentially tricky path to the final following the draw released on Wednesday. Seeded fourth and quarter-finalists on their debut in Copenhagen in 2023, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will enjoy a first-round bye. They will open their campaign in the second round possibly against India's Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Gadde. The world No. 33 Indians should pose little trouble on paper, but as the first outing in Paris, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will be eager to shake off any rust quickly. It will also be the first meeting between the two pairs. The first real test is expected in the last 16 against Indonesia's world No. 11 Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu. The Malaysians have beaten them twice this year — at the Indonesia Masters in January and Japan Open last month. However, the young Indonesians have made significant strides, lifting the Taiwan Open title in June and reaching the semi-finals of both the Asia Championships and China Open. If they clear that hurdle, a quarter-final showdown looms with Hong Kong veterans Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet. The Hong Kong pair, now under the guidance of former Malaysian international Jeremy Gan, have met Tang Jie-Ee Wei only once, with the Malaysians winning at the 2023 Arctic Open. Chun Man-Ying Suet have been rejuvenated since reuniting in April, stunning the continent's elite by winning the Asia Championships. They will be looking to add to their two World Championships' bronzes from 2018 and 2021. Reaching the semi-finals would likely mean a clash with top seeds Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping. The in-form Chinese pair have captured eight titles in their last 11 tournaments they started. While Tang Jie-Ee Wei memorably beat them in the Paris Olympics group stage, the Chinese duo still lead their head-to-head 6-2. Yan Zhe-Dong Ping will also be out to make amends for their quarter-final exit at the Games 12 months ago. National mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto believes the fourth seeding offers a crucial edge. "A seeding certainly gives a bigger chance," said Nova. "With this position, in the quarter-finals they won't meet the top pairs, especially the Chinese, so the minimum target should be a medal — at least the semi-finals." Malaysia have only ever won one mixed doubles medal in the history of the World Championships. "If Tang Jie-Ee Wei succeed, it will be historic," Nova added. "We've even joked with friends, hoping that mixed doubles luck will be on our side at this World Championships." If successful, Tang Jie-Ee Wei would become just the second Malaysian mixed doubles pair to reach the podium after Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty's bronze in 2006.

Silambam officially back in Selangor Sukma after review

KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional martial art silambam has been included in next year's Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma), joining petanque and muaythai as optional sports following a review by the supreme committee. The decision came after a special meeting on Thursday attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. The proposal was put forward by Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi, who also chairs the organising committee. The Selangor Sukma will now feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports, with the committee confirming that no further proposals or appeals will be considered. Silambam's initial omission had drawn concern from several quarters of the community before the review led to its inclusion. Hannah said her ministry is also exploring "Non-Sukma Games" for sports not on the programme. "Additionally, a new model for organising Sukma after the 2028 Kelantan edition is being studied to ensure the continuous development of sports and athletes without placing a heavy financial burden on the government," she said. The Selangor Sukma will take place across nine districts from August 15-24, 2026.

Muaythai, petanque and silambam debut in SUKMA 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Three optional sports—muaythai, petanque, and silambam—will make their debut in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor. The decision was finalised during a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee. The National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed the addition in a statement today. The meeting was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Sarawak's Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Also present were Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria and state sports officials. Selangor State Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi proposed the inclusion of the three sports. The SUKMA Supreme Committee unanimously approved the proposal. With the addition, SUKMA 2026 will feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports. No further proposals for additional sports will be considered. SUKMA 2026 is scheduled from 15 to 24 August across nine Selangor districts. Hannah Yeoh revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is exploring a 'Non-SUKMA Games' initiative. This event would cater to sports not selected for SUKMA. The new model is expected to launch after SUKMA Kelantan 2028. The initiative aims to sustain athlete development without straining government resources. - Bernama
