Silambam officially back in Selangor Sukma after review
KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional martial art silambam has been included in next year's Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma), joining petanque and muaythai as optional sports following a review by the supreme committee. The decision came after a special meeting on Thursday attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. The proposal was put forward by Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi, who also chairs the organising committee. The Selangor Sukma will now feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports, with the committee confirming that no further proposals or appeals will be considered. Silambam's initial omission had drawn concern from several quarters of the community before the review led to its inclusion. Hannah said her ministry is also exploring "Non-Sukma Games" for sports not on the programme. "Additionally, a new model for organising Sukma after the 2028 Kelantan edition is being studied to ensure the continuous development of sports and athletes without placing a heavy financial burden on the government," she said. The Selangor Sukma will take place across nine districts from August 15-24, 2026.

Selangor proposes petanque, muaythai, silambam for Sukma 2026
THE Selangor State Government has officially proposed the inclusion of petanque, muaythai, and silambam in the upcoming Sukma 2026. This was announced by a statement issued by Selangor state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi ( pic ), who is also chairman of the Sukma Selangor 2026 organising committee, on Friday (Aug 8). 'After examining all the applications, appeals and responses presented, the Selangor State Government Council chaired by the Mentri Besar today, it was decided that the Selangor Sukma secretariat submit a proposal for three additional sports to be contested in Sukma 2026. 'However, any decision regarding this proposal is subject to the agreement of all state representatives who are members of the Sukma Supreme Committee chaired by the Youth and Sports Ministry and must be finalised no later than August 15,' he said. Najwan said this proposal shows Selangor's commitment to expanding participation and empowering various sports disciplines, starting from the grassroots level to the national level. He also calls on all parties to stop any efforts to politicise sports by playing on narrow and ingrained racial sentiments. 'Sports are a field of unity that unites Malaysians across races, religions and political ideologies, and should be celebrated in a genuine and inclusive spirit of sportsmanship,' he said. Selangor, he said, is determined and committed to ensuring that the organisation of the 22nd Sukma Selangor next year will run smoothly and achieve its main goal of producing more junior athletes, in line with the government's desire to win a gold medal at the highest international sports championship, which is the 2028 Olympic Games.

Silambam heading back to Sukma?
KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor government has proposed for silambam, petanque and muaythai to be included in the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) after the sports were previously excluded. Selangor Sukma Organising Committee chairman Najwan Halimi said that the decision was made at the Selangor state executive council meeting, chaired by Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, today. "However, any decision on the proposal is subject to the agreement of all state representatives in the Sukma Supreme Committee meeting chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. "It must also be finalised by or before Aug 15 2025," said Najwan, who is also the Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman, in a statement. Najwan said the proposal reflected the Selangor government's commitment to expanding participation and strengthening various sporting disciplines from grassroots to national level. "At the same time, I urge all parties to stop politicising sports by playing on narrow and outdated racial sentiments. "Sports are a platform for unity that brings Malaysians together across race, religion and political ideology, and should be celebrated in the spirit of true and inclusive sportsmanship," he said. On Tuesday, the National Sports Council (NSC) announced that the Sukma Supreme Committee, chaired by Yeoh, had finalised several key decisions, including the addition of two compulsory sports – boxing and softball – bringing the total number of compulsory sports to 30. Four optional sports were also approved – chess, eSports, cricket and kabaddi – raising the total to 34 for the Selangor Sukma which will be held across nine districts in Selangor from Aug 15-24, next year.
