Dhankhar urges youth to set vision for nation, humanity at Sherwood Foundation Day
History remembers only those who lived and worked for the betterment of society," he said while addressing students, faculty, and invited dignitaries at Sherwood College's 156th Foundation Day.
Referring to India's civilizational heritage, Dhankhar said the country's 5,000-year-old culture demands more than passive pride — it calls for active participation in shaping its future. "India demands unflinching pride and dedication from its youth," he asserted.
Underscoring India's demographic advantage, he noted that nearly 65% of the population is under the age of 35. "We are not just the fastest-growing major economy — we are a nation of youthful strength. Let us not just respond to global changes but shape them."
Dhankhar also invoked the legacy of notable Sherwood alumni, including Major Somnath Sharma, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, and actor Amitabh Bachchan. "Their legacy is your foundation — now it's your responsibility to build on it," he told students.
Speaking about India's transformation in the past decade, he pointed to progress in infrastructure, economic growth, and digital innovation. He encouraged students to actively engage with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and machine learning. "India is poised to lead globally in digital connectivity," he said.
Uttarakhand governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh also addressed the gathering, calling Sherwood College a "beacon of national pride and character-building."
He praised the institution for nurturing leaders across fields and lauded principal Amandeep Singh Sandhu for preserving its legacy.
Later in the day, the vice president met chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the Army helipad in Haldwani before flying back to Delhi. Governor Singh was also present. The three leaders discussed ongoing developmental and cultural initiatives in Uttarakhand. The CM thanked Dhankhar for his visit and presented him with curated products from the state's "House of Himalayas" brand. The CM and Governor also conducted an aerial survey of the Jamrani Dam project, joined by several local officials and dignitaries.

'Govt denies, distracts, lies': Congress slams Centre after SC raps Rahul
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday launched a sharp criticism of the Centre over its handling of the border situation with China. He accused the Modi government of following what he called a 'DDLJ' policy, an acronym for 'deny, distract, lie, and justify'. In a post on X, Ramesh said the Centre has been evading tough questions about the ongoing standoff with China, especially since the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020, in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. 'Since June 15, 2020, when our 20 brave soldiers were martyred in Galwan, several critical questions have been arising in the minds of every patriotic Indian. However, over the past five years, instead of answering these questions, the Modi government has adopted a policy of hiding and deflecting the truth — which we can call DDLJ: Deny, Distract, Lie, and Justify,' he wrote. Ramesh's remarks came just hours after the Supreme Court pulled up Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his earlier claim that China had occupied over 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory. — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 4, 2025 Referring to the disengagement deal signed between India and China on October 21, 2024, Ramesh questioned whether the agreement truly restored the pre-April 2020 status quo, as claimed by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. He also sought clarity on whether Indian patrols now needed China's permission to access Patrolling Points that Indian forces had always accessed as part of India's territory. Ramesh cited earlier reports from 2020 that claimed about 1,000 square kilometres in eastern Ladakh, including 900 square kilometres in the Depsang area, had come under Chinese control. He demanded accountability from the government on this matter. Criticism over ties with China amid Op Sindoor Intensifying his attack, Ramesh questioned India's continuing diplomatic engagement with China despite reports of Beijing supporting Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. 'Is it not true that the Modi government is attempting to 'normalise relations' with a country that played a significant role in Pakistan's military actions during Operation Sindoor — providing Pakistan with weapon systems like J-10C fighter jets and PL-15 air-to-air missiles, and, as stated by Deputy Army Chief Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh on July 4, 2025, also providing 'live inputs' for Indian military operations?" he said in his post. SC criticises Rahul Gandhi for China comment While hearing a defamation case against the Congress MP, the court also granted interim relief by staying proceedings related to his remarks on the Indian Army during the 2020 Galwan clash. 'If you are a true Indian, you will not say these things,' the court told Gandhi, adding, 'Say things in Parliament, not on social media.' The Bench, comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and G Masih, reminded Gandhi of his constitutional responsibility as Leader of the Opposition. China issue evades media spotlight The case stems from comments Gandhi made in December 2022 during his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra'. Speaking at a press conference, he had said, 'Before I came to this press conference, I was having lunch with my friend and said I can bet that the media will not ask any question about China. They will ask about yatra, Sachin Pilot, Ashok Gehlot, everything but not China who captured 2,000 square km area of India, who martyred 20 jawans, who is thrashing our jawans in Arunachal. But the Indian press will not ask anything about this on me. Brother, desh dekh rahe hai. Don't think the country is not seeing.' (With agency inputs)

Kulgam encounter enters Day 4 as security forces battle terrorists in dense forests
Srinagar, Aug 4 (UNI) The anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district entered its fourth day today, with intermittent exchanges of fire and explosions continuing through the night in the dense Akhal Khulsan forest area. So far, two terrorists have been killed, and three soldiers injured in the ongoing operation. Officials said one of the slain terrorists is believed to be a local. The encounter which began on August 1 evening after security forces received credible intelligence inputs about the presence of four to five terrorists in the Akhal forest belt. The operation triggered a fierce exchange of fire, which has continued with varying intensity over the past 72 hours. The operation is being carried out jointly by the Army's elite Special Forces, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police, with support from Rudra attack helicopters and surveillance drones, relentlessly combing the area to flush out the hiding militants. The dense and rugged terrain has made the search effort especially challenging, officials said. The area remains under a tight cordon to prevent the remaining militants from escaping. Senior security officials are on the ground, closely monitoring the situation. "When the operation was launched on Friday, initial contact was established, leading to a fierce gunfight. While two terrorists have been neutralized, more are still holed up in the area," a security official said. This is the second major encounter in Kashmir within a week. On July 28 security forces eliminated three Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in an encounter in the Harwan-Dachigam forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar. A day later Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament that the three terrorists were responsible for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, where 25 tourists and a local pony rider were killed . Anti-Terrorist Operation Continues For 4th Day In J&K's Kulgam
Kulgam: It's day four of a protracted gun battle between security forces and terrorists in the forests of Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district. As terrorists appear to be well entrenched, troops are treading cautiously even as drones and helicopters have been used in the operation to track down terrorists. Intermittent firing and occasional blasts are heard from the operation site. The encounter started on Friday after the Army, police and CRPF launched a joint operation following a tip-off about the presence of a large group of terrorists at Akhal area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district. In the initial shootout, one local terrorist was killed. Subsequently, police said that one more terrorist was killed but his body couldn't be recovered due to ongoing fierce gun battle. Three security forces have also been injured in the encounter. "So far, we have recovered body of one terrorist. We have observed body of another terrorist but we will wait till the time body is recovered. It's a difficult terrain and a dense forest area " said VK Birdi, IGP Kashmir. Police sources say there was information about presence of five terrorists when operation was launched. According to reports, at least two or three are foreign terrorists who appear to be well trained in the jungle warfare. There are very few local terrorists left in Kashmir who are literally scarcely trained to face security forces. According to IGP Birdi, firing is still going on and terrorists appear to be firing from two directions. This is the third encounter in last one week. Earlier three terrorists who were behind Pahalgam massacre were killed in a meticulously planned operation by the security forces. Union Home Minister Amit shah told Parliament that three were identified as Pakistani terrorists who had carried out brutal killings of 26 innocent people in Pahalgam on April 22. On Thursday, two more terrorists were killed near the line of control in Poonch. Police said that the duo had infiltrated from Pakistan and were intercepted soon after they entered the Indian side.
