The Wave dominates but plays to 0-0 tie with the Washington Spirit

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Wave dominated possession but couldn't break through in a scoreless draw with the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday night.
The Wave (7-3-3) have dropped only one of their last five matches. San Diego's 24 points are the most they've had through the first 13 games in club history.
The match was the last before the NWSL goes on its summer hiatus. The league resumes play on Aug. 1.
Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury kept her team in the game with six saves. The Wave had the ball more than 65% of the match and made 16 shots, including six on target.
It was the fourth straight draw between the two teams.
The Spirit (7-4-2) had won their first five road matches this season before falling 2-0 at Portland last weekend.
Spirit coach Jonatan Giraldez did not travel with the team to San Diego because his partner Olaia is expecting the couple's second child. Assistant Adrian Gonzalez took his place.

Serie B playoff between Sampdoria and Salernitana suspended due to fireworks, seats thrown on pitch

ROME (AP) — Fireworks and seats thrown onto the pitch prompted a playoff between Sampdoria and Salernitana to stay in Serie B to be suspended midway through the second half. The incidents involving Salernitana fans occurred after Sampdoria had taken a 2-0 lead Sunday in Salerno, putting it ahead 4-0 on aggregate. The match will now likely be awarded as a 3-0 victory to Sampdoria according to league disciplinary measures — meaning Sampdoria should remain in Serie B while Salernitana will likely be relegated to Serie C. Sampdoria has never been relegated to Serie C in its 79-year history and earlier this season brought back some players from its golden years in the 1990s to manage the squad out of crisis. Salernitana was in Serie A in 2023-24. Salernitana and Sampdoria finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in the Serie B standings this season. ___ AP soccer:

The Thunder had one more opponent after winning the NBA title. The champagne corks were formidable

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder had just won the NBA championship, the on-court ceremony was over and they were heading to the locker room to start the party. This typically includes the traditional spraying of champagne all over everyone and everything. And the Thunder were ready to partake in all that. 'Where's the champagne at?' some yelled on their way into the room. It was ready. Problem was, the Thunder were not. See, the Thunder are young, the youngest NBA champion in nearly a half-century. And, well, it turns out that most players had absolutely no idea how to pop the corks. 'None of us knew how to do it,' center Isaiah Hartenstein said, revealing that some players — yes, moments after winning the NBA title — were going onto YouTube in search of tutorials for how to make the bubbles fly. Enter Thunder guard Alex Caruso, who has already won an NBA title. The oldest player on the team, at 31, showed everyone how to get it done. And eventually, they got it right. 'We didn't do it all at the same time until, like, the third try,' Caruso said. 'I tried my best.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. In time, they all figured it out. It was the last lesson of many this season for the Thunder, who finished with 84 wins — tying for the third-most in NBA history. And the team could have all of its key players back next season; they're all under contract. So, if the Thunder find a way to go back-to-back, Caruso expects the locker room celebration to go a bit more smoothly in 2026. 'We'll get some rest, reset, try to go again next year and see if we can do it again,' Caruso said. 'We'll be better. We'll be better next year.' ___ AP NBA:
