Major Cineplex unfazed by border row
On Thursday, when military attacks occurred, Narute Jiensnong, chief marketing officer at Major Cineplex, said the audiences at Cambodian branches were strong.
The number of Cambodian moviegoers has remained robust, resulting in the company's Cambodian theatre performance growing 5% year-on-year in July.
On a year-to-date basis, the market reported 10% growth year-on-year.
At the end of last year, Major Cineplex operated 187 branches, including 52 in Bangkok and surrounding areas, 126 in other Thai provinces, six in Cambodia and three in Laos, according to its annual report.
He said the company has complied with the Cambodian government's order to suspend the screening of Thai films.
"Major Cineplex Cambodia acknowledges and respects the directive from Cambodia's government to exclude Thai films from cinema schedules, effective from June 13," according to Facebook fanpage "Major Cineplex Cambodia", posted on June 13.
"The company adjusts the programming accordingly and remains committed to delivering quality entertainment experiences for our audience."
Major's theatres in Cambodia are showing local films and Hollywood titles, with the latter receiving a positive response from Cambodian moviegoers, said Mr Narute.
This year, Hollywood is offering a strong summer movie lineup, including Jurassic World: Rebirth, F1 and Fantastic Four.
Moreover, the Cambodian movie industry is growing as locals films become increasingly available there, he said.
Most staff at Major Cineplex Cambodia, from management to service levels, are Cambodians, said Mr Narute.
The company sees business potential in the Cambodian cinema market due to the nation's growing population and rising spending power, he said.
Mr Narute said he believes Cambodians still have confidence in the Major Cineplex brand.
Given this promising outlook, the company wants to expand in Cambodia based on its market confidence, he said. While the border clashes could affect some Thai businesses, they should not impact Major Cineplex's operations in Cambodia, said Mr Narute.

Cambodian power deal to be cancelled
The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), a Thai government power distribution arm, is preparing to terminate a power purchase agreement with Cambodia following the disconnection of electricity transmission to the neighbouring country during the current territorial dispute. The termination is legally required after Thailand stopped supplying electricity to Cambodia days before a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine while he and his group were on patrol along the border in the Chong Bok area of Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani on July 16. 'We asked the Cambodian Embassy through the National Security Council to confirm that the authority can terminate the contract,' said Mongkol Treekijjanon, the PEA governor. The state utility now plans to distribute 50 megawatts of electricity previously sold to Cambodia to serve demand from users in Thailand. During the clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers, PEA power distribution facilities, including electricity poles and cables, were damaged by shrapnel, resulting in power outages in some areas near the border, said Mr Mongkol. Up to 90% of the facilities were repaired, he said. Marginal decrease in power bills In a related development, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced that a new power tariff of 3.95 baht a kilowatt-hour (unit) will be used for electricity bill calculation between September and December. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga had indicated earlier that the tariff would be cut slightly from 3.98 baht a unit, which is applicable until the end of August. 'We are able to reduce the power tariff because the prices of imported liquefied natural gas [LNG](are expected to decrease,' said Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, the ERC secretary-general. Gas makes up 60% of fuels used for power generation in Thailand. The country needs to import more costly LNG as cheaper domestic gas supplies are on the decline. Part of all power bills must be reimbursed to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to help it clear a loss of 66 billion baht, which stems from past electricity price subsidy programmes. If the power tariff remains unchanged at 3.98 baht a unit, the rate would be only enough to pay back part of Egat's debt, worth 7.07 billion baht, the ERC said earlier.

Insurers won't help owner of bombed PTT station
SI SA KET - The owner of a PTT petrol station and 7-Eleven store where a Cambodian rocket strike killed eight people on July 24 faces at least 14 million baht in damages with no compensation in sight from insurers or the government. Kamolrat Phonsetthalert says she has been unable to eat or sleep since the attack seven days ago, and has needed psychiatric treatment for the trauma of witnessing the destruction. The rocket strike, which also injured 13 people, has forced the closure of the station at Ban Phue in Kantharalak district for at least two months while repairs are undertaken. More than 50 employees face uncertain income prospects during the shutdown, said Ms Kamolrat. The business was insured by two companies, but the first explicitly excludes war damage coverage, whether direct or indirect, even if the government declares the area a war disaster zone, she said. The second insurer only covers structural damage partially. Government assistance remains unclear. Deputy Energy Minister Fuangwit Anirutthewa visited the site on Thursday to assess damage and promised to propose compensation measures, but no concrete details have emerged. Ms Kamolrat criticised authorities for failing to provide advance warning of the emergency. The rocket struck in the morning of July 24, but the warning system was only activated at 3-4pm in the afternoon. She emphasised that the attack was something that could not have been predicted and was not the fault of business operators. She called for government intervention to help many entrepreneurs who suffered similar damage as a result of the border hostilities.

Nestopa Expands to Singapore, Marks Two-Year Growth
Bangkok, July 31, 2025 – a next-generation real estate technology platform, is celebrating its second anniversary with a major milestone: the official launch of its Singapore platform. This follows the successful debut of the Nestopa Thailand Digital Property Awards 2025, launched in Q2 to recognise excellence across Thailand's real estate sector — with the digital award rollout currently in progress. Founded in April 2023, Nestopa was created to elevate the standard of real estate portals in Thailand — aiming to set a new benchmark in user experience, smart technology, and data transparency, inspired by global best practices. Kevin Speakman, Founder and CEO of Nestopa Co., Ltd., shared: 'From the beginning, we envisioned Nestopa as more than a listing site. It's the first portal in Thailand to use AI to enhance agent productivity — including tools like our automated property description generator. We've also supported developers through agent-focused events and end-to-end marketing services.' Today, 62% of Nestopa's user base remains in Thailand, but international interest continues to grow — particularly from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Regional markets including India, Singapore, and Indonesia are also showing rising engagement, underscoring Nestopa's increasing role as a cross-border property platform. 'We're continuing to expand our footprint after launching in the UAE in 2024 and now Singapore in 2025 — one of Asia's most competitive premium property markets,' Kevin added. Pattaraporn Teerasataporn, Co-founder and Co-CEO, commented: 'The emergence of Generative AI is reshaping how industries operate — and real estate is no exception. Buyers and investors are increasingly relying on tools like ChatGPT and AI-powered search to guide their decisions. This shift demands that developers and agencies enhance their visibility within these new AI ecosystems. Nestopa supports this transformation through end-to-end SEO services, including SEO-optimised websites, content strategy, and technical enhancements — alongside performance-driven lead generation campaigns and curated business matchmaking events. Together, these solutions ensure real estate brands remain discoverable, relevant, and competitive in an AI-first world.' The Nestopa Thailand Digital Property Awards 2025 were launched to spotlight outstanding performance in Thai real estate — from trusted leaders to rising stars. While the digital award assets are still being rolled out, the program has already received strong support from across the industry. As Nestopa marks two years of growth, the company remains committed to driving innovation and fostering strategic partnerships to support the real estate industry both in Thailand and internationally.
