'I still get patronised on a daily basis...' Rosie Jones still feels 'underestimated in society due to her cerebral palsy

Yahoo7 hours ago

Rosie Jones feels "underestimated" every day due to her having cerebral palsy.
The 34-year-old comedian-and-writer also admits she still feels demeaned within society - all of which is reflected in her new Channel 4 sitcom Pushers, which highlights how society underestimates disabled people.
The show sees Rosie play Emily Jones, a woman who builds an illegal drug empire after her state benefits are cut due after an assessment of her disability.
Rosie admits her own real life experiences influenced her writing.
Speaking in the new UK issue of Closer magazine, Rosie said: "I am underestimated every single day - but I've never dealt cocaine in my life!
"As a 34-year-old woman, I am still infantilised by people who don't know me. I still get patronised on a daily basis, and it's annoying.
"We wanted to see how far we could push the fact that society underestimates disabled people and don't think they're capable.
"And from my experience, from the disabled people that I know and love, this isn't the case at all."
Rosie has said creating Pushers is the "pinnacle" of her career.
She admitted: "Getting my own sitcom is everything I've ever wanted - it is the pinnacle of my career.
"I thought, 'If I have this opportunity I'm going to put everything into it,' and I have."
Speaking about her pride in the project, Rosie added: "I'm so happy with it and I pride myself on never putting my name to something I don't wholeheartedly believe in.
"Some people in this industry will show up on set, do their job, then never think about it ever again - that's not me.
"Am I a control freak? Yes! I was a creator, co-writer, executive producer and actor so that meant I could have a say from early through the audition process, filming, then onto the editing."
Rosie felt nervous about acting in the programme, but her castmates - who include Ryan McParland, Lynn Hunter and Jon Furlong, among others - helped her each day on set.
She explained: "I have acted a little bit but I've never been to drama school - I don't know what I'm doing - so to be able to act with so many brilliant actors made me a better actor."
And Rosie wanted a fully disabled cast to reflect the world we live in.
"We were very passionate from the beginning that even though I was a main character, we cannot pick only one disabled character then surround them with non-disabled people because that isn't really realistic to the world we live in.
"I think it's incredibly damaging when you have one disabled character because are they meant to represent 24 per cent of the country? No! And being disabled is not a personality type.
"We really wanted a core group in Pushers who were predominantly disabled."

BBC Drafts In Consultant To Examine ‘Breakfast' Bullying Allegations After Deadline Investigation

EXCLUSIVE: The BBC has drafted in a consultant to help steer an internal review of bullying and misconduct allegations on its flagship breakfast show. Following an investigation by Deadline earlier this year, sources said the BBC's HR team has seconded a lawyer from PwC to help review the culture on Breakfast, the UK's most-watched morning TV show. Employees have been approached about sharing their experiences, according to people familiar with the process. Deadline has spoken to more than 20 industry insiders about Frediani's conduct, with many making allegations about him running the show with an iron fist, including claims of him shouting and swearing at colleagues. We revealed that senior presenter Naga Munchetty was among those thought to have raised concerns. Since taking over Breakfast in 2019, sources said Frediani has been the subject of at least two misconduct complaints, including one from a woman who had her grievance upheld after claiming that the editor physically shook her during a newsroom exchange last year. Within weeks of the complaint being upheld, the BBC expanded Frediani's empire to include News at One. The scrutiny on Breakfast's culture intensified this week when The Sun newspaper published a front-page story about the bullying allegations. Tomorrow's front page: Bullying Probe at BBC Breakfasthttps:// — The Sun (@TheSun) June 15, 2025 Frediani has not responded to requests for comment. A BBC spokesperson said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values. We have robust processes in place and would encourage any staff with concerns to raise them directly with us so they can be addressed.' The Breakfast review comes weeks after the BBC published the findings of a workplace culture inquiry by Change Associates. The review found that some individuals are 'seen as being untouchable' due to their perceived value to the BBC. It added: 'Some of those who exhibit unacceptable behaviour continue to thrive, and in some cases are promoted, whilst live investigations are ongoing, or grievances against them are upheld.' BBC chair Samir Shah said the Change Associates review was a 'line in the sand.' He added that the corporation would support those who raise concerns and that he had no tolerance for people who 'abuse power or punch down or behave badly.' Described as one of the most formidable British TV news editors of his generation, Frediani has risen from being a local radio reporter in his native city of Preston to the BBC's most powerful news executive outside of London. Based out of Salford, Frediani is said to have an instinctive understanding of audiences outside of London, a much-prized skill at the BBC, which is often accused of being biased towards the capital. Last month, Breakfast clinched the first BAFTA award in its history for its coverage of the Post Office scandal. Insiders acknowledge his skills, but he is also described as a 'bruiser' from a bygone era of newsroom culture. Sources alleged that they have felt shouted at when mistakes have been made on-air, while one person witnessed Frediani walk out of the production gallery and kick a wastebasket. Employees also expressed unease about a culture of favoritism. One person claimed to have witnessed an incident in 2019, during which a 'clearly angry' Frediani cornered a Breakfast colleague up against a wall and was 'jabbing his finger' as he voiced displeasure about that morning's show. Two sources alleged that Frediani is known for 'screaming' down the phone at other BBC News desks and complaining about the quality of content they supply Breakfast. David Beckham Had The Perfect Response To A Group Of Fans Losing It After Spotting Him In Traffic

A group of men couldn't contain their excitement when they realized that they were parked next to none other than soccer legend David Beckham while driving through London earlier this week. The boys captured the moment in a TikTok video, which has now gone viral — with David himself responding to the footage on his Instagram page. In the video, Tosin Sokoya is filming out of the car's open window, and David clearly heard the commotion that he had caused as he is looking over and smiling from his spot behind the wheel. Tosin and his two friends repeatedly exclaim: 'No!' at the surprising celebrity sighting, with one of them shouting: 'No, bro, no way — seriously though?!' Tosin then repeatedly tries to get David to rev his engine, but David politely declines, joking that he is 'too old to rev anything.'
