Education minister launches World Bank-funded 'Jordan Pathway' programme
AMMAN — Minister of Education Azmi Mahafzah on Monday launched the World Bank-funded "Jordan Pathway: Education, Skills and Administrative Reform" programme, which aims to strengthen education management and improve the quality of services and learning outcomes.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mahafzah emphasized the programme's alignment with the Economic Modernisation Vision. "This programme is a critical step in achieving our modernisation goals," according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The $400-million programme focuses on policy reforms, governance development, accountability mechanisms, and investments in human capital to ensure sustainable progress in the education sector.
He thanked Jordan's development partners, particularly the World Bank, for helping to turn this vision into a tangible reality.
Highlighting key objectives of the Jordan Pathway programme, Mahafzah outlined several "ambitious" goals, including expanding early childhood education to enrol 25,000 additional students in KG2 and improve quality standards in 4,200 classrooms.
The programme, he said, also aims to improve basic learning skills for 150,000 students in early grades, as well as strengthen vocational and technical education with graduating 50,000 students in priority sectors to meet labour market needs.
The minister also said that the programme also pushes towards improving teacher recruitment through hiring 70 per cent of teachers and principals through a new merit-based system to ensure quality education.
Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Regional Director for the Middle East, reaffirmed the global lender's commitment to supporting Jordan's education transformation.
"Jordan will harness the productive potential of its greatest asset - its people, especially youth and women - by strengthening early education and expanding vocational training," Carret said.

Clothing, fertilisers top list of national exports in 5 months
AMMAN — The Kingdom's exports of clothing, fertilisers, potash and pharmaceutical preparations achieved growth during the first five months of this year, which "directly" contributed to supporting and growing national exports during this period. According to the foreign trade report issued by the Department of Statistics (DoS) and monitored on Wednesday by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the Kingdom's exports of clothing and accessories grew by 8.8 per cent at the end of May this year, reaching JD665 million, compared with JD611 million for the same period last year. National exports of fertilisers for the end of May this year increased by 8.5 per cent to JD394 million, compared with JD363 million for the same period in 2024, and raw potash increased by 4.8 per cent to record JD198 million, compared with JD189 million for the same period in 2024. Pharmaceutical preparations for the end of May this year increased by 0.9 per cent, reaching JD233 million, compared with JD231 million for the same period last year. At the same time, the national exports of jewellery decreased by 16.8 per cent to reach JD277 million, compared with JD333 million for the same period last year, and phosphate exports decreased by 4.5 per cent, to record JD212 million, compared with JD222 million for the same period last year.

'Israeli' military finds no evidence Hamas stole UN aid, despite government claims
Despite long-standing claims by the 'Israeli' government that Hamas systematically stole humanitarian aid, 'Israeli' military officials have found no evidence to support this, according to senior military sources. These claims were used as a key justification for restricting aid into Gaza. Military officials told The New York Times that the UN's aid delivery system was largely effective and less vulnerable to Hamas interference than smaller organizations. An internal US report also concluded there was no evidence Hamas stole US-funded aid. The ministry expressed its gratitude to the countries that clearly voiced their support for the recognition of the State of Palestine, describing it as a contribution to peace and a way to safeguard the two-state solution, which remains the only viable path forward. The ministry affirmed that the declaration, along with the outcomes of the work of the eight specialized committees, constitutes a practical and effective plan on political, economic, legal, and security levels. Implementing this plan according to a clear timeline would reinforce the foundations of peace, security, and stability in the Middle East. It called on the countries participating in the conference—and all other states—to join the declaration as a practical tool for building international momentum to implement the two-state solution and to translate speeches and statements into concrete actions and commitments.
