The European premiere of Steve, a new feature directed by Tim Mielants and written by acclaimed author Max Porter, will take place at The Arc Cinema in Cork, followed by an exclusive Q&A event at Cork Opera House. Pic:This one-night-only experience will take place as part of Sounds From A Safe Harbour and offers audiences the chance to see the film before its wider release in select cinemas in September, and on Netflix globally on October 3.
The highly anticipated film is based on Max Porter's acclaimed novel Shy. Directed by Tim Mielants (Small Things Like These), this powerful drama follows a headteacher battling the closure of his reform school alongside the inner turmoil of a young student (Jay Lycurgo).
The announcement comes as part of a wider programme release for SFSH's landmark 10th anniversary edition.
Taking place across multiple venues in Cork City from 11–14 September 2025, SFSH invites audiences back into a world of music, language, art, and ritual.
The programme was lovingly curated by a team which includes; Festival Director Mary Hickson, Cillian Murphy, composer Bryce Dessner (The National), author Max Porter, and folklorist Billy MagFhlionn.
Speaking about this year's film programme, Murphy said: 'I am thrilled to be part of the inaugural film programme of SFSH 2025. Pic:'There has always been such a natural crossover between cinema and music, and these delightfully diverse films very much speak to the philosophy and heart of what this festival is all about.
'It is very meaningful for me to have the European premiere of Steve in my hometown of Cork city,' he added. 'Steve is a film that Max Porter wrote listening to 90's Jungle and the film's score is deeply influenced by the rhythms and patterns of drum and bass. The music documentaries in the programme are studies on some of my favourite artists of all time, Jeff Buckley, Broken Social Scene, Donal Lunny, Brian Eno and Conor Walsh. Each one elegiac and sensitive and revelatory in different ways.
'Train Dreams is scored by festival curator Bryce Dessner and is a heartbreaking adaptation of that beautiful novel. We are also thrilled to be presenting Manchán Magan's beautifully intimate documentary Let the Land Speak. I think Cork audiences will truly relish this bespoke selection of unique films, which can be sampled alongside the amazing live music events happening across the city throughout the festival.'

Sydney Chandler describes experience on the Alien: Earth TV series as 'a joy'
Sydney Chandler has described her first experience of leading a cast in the new sci-fi drama Alien: Earth as a "joy". The 29-year-old American actress plays Wendy, a humanoid robot with human consciousness, in Emmy-winning producer Noah Hawley's new series based on the acclaimed franchise. The Alien franchise began with Ridley Scott's 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, who takes on an extra-terrestrial lifeform called the Xenomorph. The new eight-episode series sees Wendy and a group of tactical soldiers make a discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat. Chandler, who starred in Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling and Danny Boyle's miniseries Pistol, about the Sex Pistols, said she was lucky to have such a supportive cast for her first lead role. "I felt like every day I was showing up to an incredible acting class," Chandler told the PA news agency. "I'm new to this game, and so it was just a joy to be able to work with such a supportive and such a giving cast who were there to play." Speaking of her character, she said: "There's so many layers to her and she's just a juicy character to jump into. "I did as much prep as you can for a character, there's no research you could do. "I really found my character once I started working off everybody." Alien: Earth is set in the year 2120, when the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this corporate era, cyborgs and synthetics, which are humanoid robots with artificial intelligence, exist alongside humans, but the world is changed when the founder of the Prodigy corporation unlocks a technological advance: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). Wendy, the first hybrid prototype, marks a new advance in the race for immortality and after Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter new and terrifying life forms. The cast includes Deadwood actor Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Black Mirror star Alex Lawther as Hermit, Mary And George's Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Guerrilla actor Babou Ceesay as Morrow and Bottom star Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins. Blenkin said the filming experience was made a lot easier due to Hawley's practical approach to special effects. "We were lucky on this show because we're not doing much acting with tennis balls or anything like that that you do in a show where there's a lot of CGI," the 29-year-old actor explained. "Noah was really intent upon everything being practical. "There's no acting required when Cameron, the vegan New Zealander, is wearing a Xenomorph suit and is leering over you and drooling, and it's animatronic and it's real. "It was just a joy. We turn into kids on those sets." Hawley, who is best known for creating the Fargo TV series, said the "imperfections of reality are scarier than the sort of bloodlessness of computer-generated images". "All I'm trying to do is create the same feelings that you had when you watched Ridley's film or James Cameron's film," the 57-year-old writer and director explained. "Some of that we're able to achieve in new ways, but some of it is literally going back to the original cinema of optical illusions." Alien: Earth will launch on Disney+ on 13 August.

"Channel 4 are keen for another series but at the moment Joe has taken extended time off to be with his newborn son and family. "It means meetings around the future of Late Night Lycett have not been able to take place. Dolly Parton named Guinness World Records icon
US country star Dolly Parton has been named a Guinness World Records icon for holding 11 record-breaking titles. As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the company – which lists world record achievements – has honoured the Jolene singer, 79, with an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the Egot – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – aka the "Grand Slam of showbusiness". Craig Glenday, editor in chief at Guinness World Records, said: "Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extends far beyond the musical world. "There are so many projects close to her heart – poverty relief, education, medical research and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign – and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propels Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her." Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Drake, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. Parton, who is from Tennessee, released her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly in 1967 and had a run of hits in the 1970s. By the 1980s she was a huge star and made her movie debut in screwball comedy 9 To 5. Her most recent album was Rockstar, released in 2023, and she recently featured in a version of Sabrina Carpenter's Please Please Please. She is also the co-owner of the Dollywood Company, which operates Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
