THE BIG TEN WILL DOUBLE ITS FIRST-ROUND PICKS FROM LAST YEAR

It's become pretty typical that the Big Ten is chasing the SEC for most NFL Draft choices. That'll likely remain the same for overall selections but the Big Ten is closing the gap with first-round selections. This year I think the conference could hit double-digit first-round draft picks.

Technically, there were only four first-rounders from the Big Ten in the 2024 draft because the West Coast programs hadn't started playing in the conference yet. But this year the Big Ten will blow that number out of the water. We know for sure that Abdul Carter, Tyler Warren, Mason Graham and Colston Loveland will go in the first round. There will be plenty others too and people will be buzzing about how well the conference did on night one.
THOMAS FIDONE WILL BE THE HIGHEST SKILL PLAYER DRAFTED FROM NEBRASKA SINCE 2016

The recent history of Nebraska skill players being drafted is not great. Since 2018 the program has only had three (QB Tanner Lee, WR Samori Toure and WR Trey Palmer) drafted. Interestingly, none of those players signed with Nebraska out of high school.

In fact, you'd have to go back to the 2016 NFL Draft to find a homegrown skill player drafted as high as fullback Andy Janovich. He was the first pick of the sixth round.
But Thomas Fidone has a shot to get drafted and go higher than expected. He was a major recruit coming out of high school and injuries really slowed his progress in college. Fidone still has a lot of that athleticism even if the production wasn't there at Nebraska. Someone's going to take a shot on him.

FOUR-STAR QB JAMESON PURCELL WILL CHOOSE INDIANA
The Illinois four-star quarterback was just in Bloomington to check out the Hoosiers' spring game. Indiana has locked in on him as a top target and the feeling is mutual as Jameson Purcell holds the program in high regard.

The quarterback believes that he would be a great fit in coach Curt Cignetti's scheme. An added wrinkle here is that Purcell's parents both went to Indiana along with several other family members. It makes a lot of sense for him to be part of the 2027 class.

Short-handed Fever suffer another blow as Sophie Cunningham sustains season-ending injury
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The injury-riddled Indiana Fever suffered another blow Tuesday when they announced guard Sophie Cunningham would miss the rest of this season with a knee injury. She was hurt during Sunday's victory at Connecticut. Team officials did not provide details about the injury, the third season-ending one Indiana has experienced in August. Guard Sydney Colson tore the ACL in her left knee on Aug. 7 in a game at Phoenix. Guard Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot in the same game. And two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark still has not played since injuring her right groin in mid-July. Coach Stephanie White has not provided a timetable for Clark's return other than to say the Fever hope that Clark returns before the regular-season finale Sept. 9 against Minnesota. With so many key players out, the outspoken Cunningham played a key role in helping Indiana stay in the playoff mix. She was averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals. Indiana also announced it has signed Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract. The six-year veteran was averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 assists in six games with the Los Angeles Sparks. Texas QB Manning says NFL plans not taking shape yet despite grandpa's prediction of 2026 in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas -- There's so much speculation about Texas quarterback Arch Manning's future, in the media and even within his own family, that it can be hard for him to keep up. On Tuesday, Manning insisted he's not plotting out how long he'll stay at Texas or when he'll enter the NFL draft, despite his grandfather's recent prediction to Texas Monthly magazine that he'll be with the Longhorns through the 2026 season. 'I don't know where he got that from,' Arch Manning said in his first meeting with reporters since SEC media days in mid-July. 'He texted me to apologize about that. I'm really just taking it day by day right now.' Arch Manning has been careful while talking about his future as he leads the No. 1 Longhorns as the full-time starter after playing behind Quinn Ewers the past two seasons. Manning enters this season as the early favorite for the Heisman Trophy, has endorsement deals worth millions and comes from the most famous quarterbacking family in football. Grandfather Archie played in the NFL and uncles Peyton and Eli combined for four Super Bowl victories. Add that together and Arch Manning is shouldering the biggest spotlight of any player in the country. Texas opens the season Aug. 30 at No. 3 Ohio State after losing to the Buckeyes in the national playoff semifinals last season. Manning is also very close to his grandfather, despite any confusion about whether he's destined for one or two seasons as the Texas starter before heading to the NFL. Manning noted Tuesday how Archie is always giving him advice on how to avoid taking big hits to prolong his career. 'Those hits add up,' Arch Manning said. 'My grandfather, he's hobbling around these days. He ends every call with 'get down or get out of bounds.''
